The star has been clean since 2008
Cher and Greg Allman's son, the musician and artist Elijah Blue Allman, has opened up about his battle with drug addiction, which he says began when he was only 11 years old. The 37-year-old was speaking to old ET's Rob Marciano when he admitted his early-age drug abuse.
Cher's son has detailed his history of drug abuse
"I started with drugs... at around 11, just weed, Ecstasy, acid; it started with that kind of Grateful Dead parking lot culture,” he explained. "I can remember being 14 and doing huge hits of nitrous (oxide) and falling under a taxi cab and, like, waking up with the doorknob on my forehead."
As he approaches his late 30s, Allman insists heroin addiction saved his life. "If people go through a time in their life where they didn't have that tool, you may jump off a bridge... If you can only just go through that time period and just live through it and then get help..." he explained.
Discussion on drug abuse has been rife in the public spectrum following the behavior of stars like Justin Bieber, with the tragic death of Philip Seymour Hoffman acting as a reminder of the dangers of such acitivies.
"When you're that age, that's what you're gonna do and hope you live through it... I could never be, like, preachy and say, like, don't do that; that's just not in my nature. Someone like Bieber's in a little bit of a different situation that someone like me of course... It's gotta be a little bit of a nightmare that you wanna escape, like, 'Here's all this fame I went to go get, now I got it'..." he explained of the controversial teen star. Allman has been sober since 2008.
