As well as 'The Jungle Book', so far we've had 'Snow White and the Huntsman', 'Maleficent', 'Cinderella', 'Hercules', 'Alice In Wonderland'... need we go on? The 5th Wave Put Chloe Grace Moretz Into 'Anti-Training'

Chloe Moretz

Moretz's new movie is based on the first novel in Rick Yancey's planned trilogy of books about teens facing an alien invasion. But this is a genre Moretz never really pursued.

"I enjoy books that aren't really YA (young adult) in that sense," she says, "so when I read The 5th Wave it's a very un-YA YA book. It deals with bigger problems and bigger emotions than most YA books. My favourite novel in general is Wuthering Heights!"

The 5th Wave Review

Very Good

Also based on the first in a trilogy of post-apocalyptic teen novels, this thriller feels like it could be a worthy successor to The Hunger Games saga, with its smart story and strong characters. The premise feels remarkably grounded, as it follows a feisty teen while her world is turned upside down by an alien invasion. And Chloe Grace Moretz gives one of her most complex performances to date as a quick, flawed heroine.

The title refers to the stages of invasion, as unseen aliens quietly take over the planet. And then not so quietly. Most of humanity has been killed by disasters or disease, with the survivors waiting for whatever the next wave of attack might be. Before this, Cassie (Moretz) was a normal 16-year-old with a crush on the cute Ben (Nick Robinson). Now she's running for her life, trying to rescue her little brother Sam (Zackary Arthur), who has been whisked to safety by the gung-ho Colonel Vosch (Liev Schreiber) and his military resistance. Along the way, she meets farm boy Evan (Alex Roe), whom she reluctantly trusts mainly because he's such a hunk. Meanwhile, Ben finds himself in Sam's unit in the newly formed child's army Vosch is training to hunt down aliens who have taken human form.

Director Blakeson keeps the pace brisk without rushing past important details. This makes what happens feel unusually believable, and it also allows the actors to add personal touches to their performances. Moretz finds Cassie's innate courage and quick physicality, but nicely balances it with her impulsive decisions and adolescent self-doubt. As in most of these movies, she has to be in a love triangle, but her scenes with both Robinson and Roe offer something a bit more intriguing, mainly because both actors have surprises up their sleeves. There's also a fourth person in this relationship in the form of Maika Monroe's tough-girl fighter Ringer, perhaps the most intriguing character on-screen.

'Say When' Continues Knightley's Growth As An Actress

Keira Knightley Chloe Moretz

Keira Knightley is having a great year, with three performances that mark a clear turn in her career. She's throwing herself into roles with a loose abandon that brings out her own sparky personality in hitherto unseen ways. After surprising everyone with her raw singing talent in 'Begin Again', she now takes on a grown-up coming-of-age role in 'Say When' (aka 'Laggies'). And her strikingly open-handed performance in 'The Imitation Game' is still to come.

Chloë Grace Moretz appears alongside Knightley in 'Say When'

Knightley broke through with her lead role in the 2002 sleeper hit 'Bend It Like Beckham', a football movie that isn't quite as good as most people remember it being. Knightley's performance is rather stiff, but she has undeniable screen charisma, which is what landed her as the heroine in the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogy. A small role in 'Love Actually' and a strangely goth action-girl Guinevere in 2004's 'King Arthur' followed, plus the first glimpse of her acting chops in John Maybury's little-seen 'The Jacket', opposite Adrien Brody.

'The Equalizer' Takes A New Approach To The Remake

Denzel Washington Chloe Moretz

It's hardly surprising that filmmakers raised on TV series in the 1980s are now turning them into movies. Some of these end up as faithful adaptations (Miami Vice, The Dukes of Hazzard), while others take a more knowingly pastiche approach (Charlie's Angels, 21 Jump Street). What we haven't seen before is a film that only takes the barest hint of an idea to make a very different kind of movie. But that's exactly what's happened with The Equalizer.

Denzel Washington in The Equalizer
Robert McCall is played by Denzel Washington in this new film

The television series ran for four seasons from 1985 to 1989, starring British actor Edward Woodward as retired intelligence officer Robert McCall, who quietly goes about helping people who are in trouble. The show's theme centres on McCall's efforts to atone for his violent past by doing good in his golden years, mainly working as an investigator or bodyguard who takes on drug dealers, murderers, rapists and kidnappers.

The Equalizer - Featurette and Clip

Director Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Olympus Has Fallen) talks about what makes The Equalizer (Denzel Washington) different from other action movie heroes. The name comes from how he spends his days as a "regular Joe", but uses hand-to-hand combat in order to fight his way through legions of bad guys "levelling the playing field". Producer Todd Black (A Knight's Tale, The Pursuit of Happiness) goes on to explain The Equalizer's skill set. He uses impeccable awareness of his surroundings to manipulate his environment into a weapon - this leads to stunt coordinator Keith Woulard discussing Washington's desire to make the fight scenes "dirty and gritty, but he want[ed] it smart".

‘If I Stay’ Tops The Last Weekend Of Summer Box Office While ‘Sin City: A Dame To Kill For’ Falls Flat

Chloe Moretz

It was meant to be an end of the summer box office battle, between a tear jerking teen drama and a long waited comic book sequel. But instead, audiences have largely stayed away from theatres this weekend, rather than make the 'difficult' choice between If I Stay and Sin City: A Dame To Kill For.

Chloe Moretz’s young adult drama, about a girl forced to choose between dying and waking up from a coma after an accident which killed her family, has won the battle taking $6.8 million on its first Friday, according to Forbes. However $6.8 million isn't really much of victory in what should have been the last big weekend of the summer season.

Halloween Weekend Box Office Preview: Could "Bad Grandpa" Knock Gravity Off The Top?

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Chloe Moretz

“Gravity” is a critically acclaimed space thriller starring A-listers and directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Bad Grandpa is Jackass’ newest collection of fart jokes and obvious innuendo. One of these should be a clear winner at the box office this weekend, but it might not be the one you expect. Gravity has been anchored at the top for three weeks straight, since its October 4th debut, but now the new contender looks set to knock the movie off its box office throne.

Gravity Still
Gravity will finally lose its leadership over Halloween weekend.

Interestingly enough, Ridley Scott’s the Counselor is also in cinemas this weekend, but maybe the overall poor reviews have influenced audiences, because the film isn’t considered a contender for box office glory, according to Entertainment Weekly.

'Gravity' Still Orbiting Top Spot At The US Box Office For Third Week Running

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Tom Hanks Chloe Moretz Benedict Cumberbatch Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone

It's been three weeks since it was released to the American public, but the sci-fi thriller Gravity has stayed strong and continued to dominate the US box office. The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-starring film has continued to be a popular choice among cinema goers, helped largely by its word-of-mouth success and continued success in 3D and IMAX cinemas.

Gravity
Even Sandra Bullock can't believe Gravity's success

In what was a relatively lackluster weekend at the movies, Gravity added to its already impressive domestic gross with another $31 million (estimate) coming in from audiences since Friday (18 Oct.). The space-set Oscar contender did face some competition for the top spot, but its nearest rivals - horror remake Carrie and fellow Oscar-contender Captain Phillips - failed to do enough, leaving Gravity sitting pretty at the top of the US film chart. The estimated $31 million brought in over the weekend bring the total domestic gross to a whooping $170.6 million, a huge amount for a film that was predicted to only do modestly before its release three weeks ago.

'Gravity' Leads At The Box Office Once Again After Lackluster Weekend

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Tom Hanks Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone Chloe Moretz

Gravity needs no introduction anymore. The Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-starring sci-fi thriller has been written about and praised highly non-stop since it was released three weeks ago and on the top of this massive audience and critical success, the film has held strong for it's third consecutive weekend at the top of the box office. This weekend, it's estimated gross reflected a disappointing three days for the movie business, but with approximately $31 million coming in from audiences since Friday (18 Oct.), that number has been enough to keep the Alfonso Cuaron-directed film at the top for another week.

Gravity
Gravity still soars above the competition

There was some competition for the film, namely from newcomer Carrie and fellow Oscar-contender Captain Phillips, which finished the week in second place for a second consecutive week. Despite the best efforts from it's nearest competitors, and still benefitting from the revenue it receives from 3D and IMAX tickets, Gravity is sitting pretty at the top of the film chart once again. With a reported gross of $170.6 million domestically in just three weeks, the film is already the 10th highest grossing film of the year in the home market, and there is a good chance that the film will go on to climb up a few more places in the year's top ten before it's cinematic run is over. Take into consideration the fact that it hasn't been released in international markets yet, then Gravity could become one of the top grossing films of the year.

'Gravity' Still Soars Above Competition And Earns It's Third Weekend Atop The Box Office

Sandra Bullock George Clooney Chloe Moretz Benedict Cumberbatch Arnold Schwarzenegger Sylvester Stallone

Gravity is still America's most popular film at the cinemas, as the Sandra Bullock and George Clooney-starring sci-fi disaster movie has held strong for it's third consecutive weekend at the top of the box office. Despite some strong competition from newcomer Carrie and some other new titles from the week, the 3D and IMAX phenomenon is still performing strongly and sitting pretty at the top of the film chart.

Gravity
Gravity is still top at the box office

Gravity's weekend gross reflected a disappointing three days for the movie business, with only $31 million coming in from cinema-goers since Friday. Still, this has proved to be enough to keep it's nearest competitor at bay and enjoy yet more success. Providing Carrie or Captain Phillips don't have an overwhelming and unprecedented night of success this evening (20 October), then Gravity will quite easily continue to dominate the US box office.

'Carrie' Critics Unable To See Past 1976

Chloe Moretz Julianne Moore

The latest adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 novel, Carrie, has received a series of negative reviews ahead of its release in the US today (18th October). The film stars Chloe Grace Moretz (Kick-Ass), as Carrie, and Julianne Moore (The Hours) as her mother, Margaret. Carrie has the supernatural gift of telekinesis and, after being bullied at her high school, uses her powers to destroy her tormentors.

Reviews of this latest adaptation have been less than favourable. There gory elements have been "revamped" but, as Katey Rich of The Guardian stated, "Carrie eventually devolves into lacklustre modern horror clichés for a souped-up version of the famous finale."

With Star Wars Episode VII approaching (we use that word loosely, since the actual release date won’t be until 2015) fans are almost going crazy with speculation – Benedict Cumberbatch and Chloe Grace Moretz have both been pegged for roles in the Jj Abrams movie. While Cumberbatch has adamantly denied any involvement with Episode VII, as has his rep, the Moretz rumors seem to be hanging by an even flimsier thread.

It takes very little to start a rumor.

It turns out Chloe Grace is an avid Star Wars fans and has been marathoning the two original trilogies of late – at least her twitter feed says so. The Butler has made $25 million in its opening weekend and has gained critical praise. The historical epic is inspired by the true story of Cecil Gaines, a black butler who whilst serving at the White House, saw the offices of eight presidents. His life and family form a touchstone for the audience when addressing such historical events as the Civil Rights Movement and the rise of Black Power in the US.

'Kick Ass 2' Violence Shocks Critics

Kick-Ass 2 has been universally panned by critics. It is due to be released in the US today (16th August) whilst it is already out in UK cinemas.

Kick Ass 2… Doesn’t Kick Ass!? Oh No! At Least Chloe Moretz Is Good

Chloe Moretz Jim Carrey

Given that the original movie was so good, when we asked the question: can Kick Ass 2 possibly be better than the first?, we were asking a rhetorical question, or at least we thought we were. As it turns out, Kick Ass kicked Kick Ass 2’s ass.

Chloe Moretz as Hit Girl

Mark Miller – the creator of Kick Ass – even answered our then-rhetorical question. “Could 'Kick Ass 2' Be Even Better Than The First? Answer: YES... VERY VERY POSSIBLY!” he Tweeted in response to us, but alas, if the critics are doing their jobs properly, it’s not quite the film the original managed to be.

'Kick Ass 2' Does Exactly 'What It Says On The Tin', So Why Did Jim Carrey Withdraw His Support?

Jim Carrey Aaron Johnson Chloe Moretz Star Wars

Jim Carrey has withdrawn his support from Kick-Ass 2 claiming, via Twitter, that 'in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence'. He claims the reason behind his decision to withdraw is due to the Sandy Hook shootings.

The Sandy Hook shootings took place at a high school in December 2012. Twenty students and six members of teaching staff were murdered by a lone gun-man. The incident caused an outcry for gun laws in the US to be restricted.;

Since the shootings, Carrey has been one of the loudest advocates of restricted gun laws. He claims that as a result of these events and his own political opinion he no longer wishes to support Kick-Ass 2, whereby he will still be appearing in the completed film but will not be attending any publicity events which promote it.

Has Jim Carrey Shot Himself In The Foot With 'Kick-Ass 2' Renunciation?

Jim Carrey Aaron Johnson Chloe Moretz Christopher Mintz-Plasse Donald Faison

Jim Carrey will next star in the much-anticipated sequel to 2010's Kick-Ass, imaginatively called Kick-Ass 2, which is due out later this summer. While the rest of the cast and crew get ready to promote the film and do their bit to ensure it is a success, Carrey has decided in an act of non-violent protest that he will not be joining his crew-mates as they lobby for the film.

Carrey is a striden campaigner for stricter gun control in the USA and in the wake of the tragic school shootings at Sandy Hook, he has decided not to support the film, announcing his decision on Twitter. On Sunday (June 23) he posted on to his feed; “I did "Kickass" a month b4 Sandy Hook and now in all good conscience I cannot support that level of violence," adding in another Tweet, "my apologies to others involved with the film. I am not ashamed of it but recent events have caused a change in my heart.”

A noble move yes, but Carrey may have accidentally shot himself in the foot because now people are demanding that the star put his money where his mouth is and if he really is as opposed to the movie he says he is, then why not give away the fee he received. Others saw it as a direct attack on the film and should box office takings and intrest in the movie begin to fall, the blame will no doubt be placed squarely on Carrey. Others meanwhile just didn't understand Carrey's logic, including Mark Millar - the writer of the Kick-Ass graphic novel, and how he managed to blur the lines between fiction and reality, as well as questioning why he chose to single out one occurrence as his reason behind denouncing the film.

Post-Breakup Kristen Stewart Bags Two Lead Roles

Kristen Stewart Robert Pattinson Chloe Moretz Juliette Binoche

Kristen Stewart, star of the Twilight franchise, has landed herself lead roles in political drama Camp X-Ray, and Swiss-set Sils Maria.

The 23 year-old actress, best known for her lead role as Bella Swan in the recently-ended Twilight saga, has been confirmed for the two indie films, set to shoot back-to-back this summer, according to deadline.com.

After reportedly having split in May from on-off boyfriend and fellow Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson, who she met on the set of the first Twilight movie in 2008, it seems K-Stew is keeping her mind off the split by staying busy with new projects.

Carrie Trailer – We’re Ready For Some Scares (Video)

Chloe Moretz

The latest reimagining of cult classic horror, starring Chloe Grace Moretz, has a scary new trailer to whet our appetite. Will it stand up to the original? Check the trailer out below.

In this trailer, we see Julianne Moore – who plays Carrie’s mother, Margaret White – is nearly as scary as Carrie herself, who can manipulate her environment to catastrophic events when she’s angry enough; she’s like a mini telekinetic Hulk. The re-make to the Oscar nominated 1976 horror based on the book by acclaimed author Stephen King is due to hit screens this year in the first major rendition since the Brian De Palma flick's release. Boys Don’t Cry director Kimberly Peirce helms the project, while the script was written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, best known for his work on HBO drama series Big Love, based on the original novel by King. The film was originally due for release this March, but has since been pushed back and will now open on November 29 in the U.K and October 18th in the U.S.

Too Much Spoiler In New Carrie Trailer? Horror Nerds: Discuss.

Chloe Moretz Julianne Moore

A note to the makers of the Carrie remake: not everyone has seen the original, you know. You may have wanted to keep a little bit of the plotline as a surprise?

Starring Chloe Grace Moretz in the title role of the socially awkward, telekinetically (ahem) ‘blessed’ teen who learns about puberty the hard way, this remake of the classic 1976 Brian De Palma horror is nonetheless looking pretty enticing. Even if we’ve just been shown a two and a half minute synopsis of what seems to be pretty much the entire plot.

An adaptation of Stephen King’s novel, this modern remake stars Julianne Moore as Carrie White’s overbearing and over-religious mother. The cruelty of teenage life is made even more cringeworthy, in this contemporary reboot, as, of course, we can now not only bully people, but we can record such incidences of bullying on our smart phones, keeping the footage available for future torture and abuse. Starring in the title role, Moretz looks delightfully kooky and just the right shade of weird – just as Cissy Spacek did in the original, whilst Julianne Moore makes for a fairly terrifying, nutty mom.

Kick Ass 2 Trailer

Dave Lizewski is Kick-Ass, a real superhero who's been trying to live a normal life as a high school student alongside his younger counterpart Mindy, also known as Hit-Girl. However, his escapades fighting and killing crime boss Frank D'Amico has inspired a generation of masked crime-fighters to band together as an alliance led by Colonel Stars and Stripes to protect the streets of New York. Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl decide to don their costumes again when news of Red Mist, D'Amico's son who is now known as supervillain The Motherf*****, assembling an army to destroy them reaches them. However, the hero duo have other things to worry about when the NYPD decide they've had enough of cleaning up the mess of the city's masked protectors and so vow to arrest every costume donning person on the streets. Hit-Girl is apprehended and forced to give up her moniker, and so Kick-Ass must join superhero league Justice Forever in order to combat the imminent uprising of the new formidable evil.

Jim Carrey Is Judd Apatow's Funniest Man On Earth

Jim Carrey Judd Apatow Chloe Moretz

The name 'Judd Appatow' probably rings a bell, but without clear recognition of who he is. We guarrantee that he's partly responsible for one of your favourite contemporary comedy movies, having been involved as either a director, writer or producer for The Cable Guy, Anchor Man, Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Superbad, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Pineapple Express, Don't Mess With the Zohan and Bridesmaids. To name but a few. It's safe to say, this man knows comedy. Which is why it is actually news worthy for him to say that Jim Carrey is the funniest man on the earth, because it kind of means that we have to consider whether Jim Carrey might actually be the funniest man on earth...

For the latest edition of Vanity Fair, Appatow teamed up with the editorial team for their special comedy issue and wrote: "When I was a stand-up comedian in the late 80s, I used to open for Jim Carrey on the road. I would do my lame act and then he would come on and do the most energetic, inventive, uproarious set I had ever witnessed. I retired from performing as a result. He was and is the funniest man on earth. This is something we can all agree on. We can debate number two forever but Jim will always be the king."

High praise indeed! And he certainly sounds convincing, but to be honest, we don't actually agree with him. While Appatow is currently working on the Anchor Man sequel and something called 'Can a Song Save Your Life?', Carrey has been working hard on the set for another sequel- Kick Ass 2. As Yahoo reported, he took the cast of the film on a private boat tour of the Thames in England, giving them a hilarious fictional history of England as they travelled- apparently it kept Chloe Moretz, Nicolas Cage and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in stitches.

Movie 43 Trailer

If you were hoping for a romantic comedy with a harmless storyline, romance and inoffensive jokes, the here's a warning: read no further. 'Movie 43' is one of the most cringe-worthy and uncensored taboo-filled flicks to be released in the history of comedy. Here you will see several interlinked stories with characters' lives surrounding unusual proposals, interrupting blind kids' parties, bad parenting, teenage menstruation, a confused and slightly racist basketball coach, innovative business ideas and the kidnapping of a violent leprechaun. Once you see this movie it is unlikely you will find a subject that offends you ever again.

With twelve different comedy genius directors including Peter Farrelly ('Dumb & Dumber', 'There's Something About Mary', 'Shallow Hal'), Steve Carr ('Daddy Day Care', 'Dr Dolittle 2'), Steven Brill ('Little Nicky') and Brett Ratner ('Rush Hour') to name but a few and eight different writers, this jaw-droppingly crude and often obscene movie features a diverse star-studded cast, both British and American, who have banded together to shock you in the most hilarious ways you can think of. Whatever kind of comedy you're into, 'Movie 43' probably has something in it for everyone and it is set to hit the big screen on February 1st 2012.

Chloe Moretz Talks 'Carrie' Remake

Chloe Moretz

Casting Chloe Moretz in the 'Carrie' remake is the best decision anyone has ever made. Carrie is an extraordinary and iconic character from film's horror history; she's a frustrated teenager with special powers. Moretz is a teenager that is equally - though less disturbingly - special.

Although anyone would be daunted by replaying a character that is so marked in our imaginations and in film itself, Moretz acknowledged the big shoes she was expected to step into, and wanted to make them her own. Speaking at the New York Comic Con. 2012, she spoke confidently with incredible maturity in her approach to the role; "I... try to look at it as what it is,” which is "a beautiful acting piece between a mother and a daughter.” She said, “It has the really cool aspects of telekinesis. That's how I judge it and that's how I look at it as an actress. I try to forget about if we're going to live up to the expectations of what people are going to want."

In 'Carrie' Moretz sees teenagers across America who are all faced with a 'Vicious cycle' reports MTV. You start off this broken down adolescent, kind of awkward, gangly girl, she goes from gangly to this beautiful young woman ... and it comes back full circle to wanting to be in her mom's arms.” She says, “It's this beautiful circle, which is what happens when you're growing up. You want to get out of your parents' house. You want to go, and then you're out and you think home is really fun, and you always want to come back."

Carrie Remake Teaser Trailer: Will Fans Of The Original Be Converted?

Chloe Moretz Julianne Moore Brian De Palma Kimberly Peirce Sissy Spacek

A teaser trailer for the Carrie remake was unveiled at New York’s Comic Con last weekend and has now made its way online. Starring Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, the re-visioning of the 1976 Brian De Palma classic will, of course, have horror fanatics cowering behind the sofa in fear, peering gingerly through the fingers that fearfully cover their eyes. This won’t be because they are particularly scared of whatever is happening on screen, though but because they are petrified of what director Kimberly Peirce may have done to their beloved Carrie.

The teaser trailer itself isn’t exactly very… teasing. As the camera pans over an American town that’s been pretty much entirely set on fire, it eventually zooms in on Chloe Grace Moretz, stood in the middle of the street, surrounded by flames and covered in blood, recalling the classic Carrie scene. Except, in the classic image of Carrie (played by Sissy Spacek), covered in blood, she wasn’t standing in the middle of the street. She was at her school prom. But hey, why let a massive detail like that upset you? Perhaps this scene is just from her walk home from the prom. (Cue thousands of horror purists reaching for their ventilators).

Over the action, a montage of voices spout various suspense-inducing phrases, such as “she wasn’t some monster — she was just a girl” and “her mother was a fanatic, I don’t know how she lived with her.” We don’t get much more than that from this first glimpse of the film; the movie’s producers will have to try a lot harder than this if they want to coax any fans of the original out from behind the sofa.

Karl Lagerfeld, Keira Knightley And Chloe Moretz Celebrate Chanel's 'Little Black Jacket' In London

Karl Lagerfeld Keira Knightley Chloe Moretz Shock Machine

Any event of Chanel's will always be full of the world's best dressed and most beautiful people. As such, Keira Knightley was a prerequisite to Chanel's 'Little Black Jacket' event in London, last night (11th Oct 2012). The event was to celebrate the launch of an exhibition of photos of different people wearing Chanel's iconic 'Little Black Jacket', at the Saachi Gallery in London.

Knightley has been one of the faces of Chanel since 2006, appearing in promotional material for one of the fashion house's perfumes, Coco Mademoiselle. As such she has developed a friendship with head of the house, Karl Lagerfeld, who of course attended the event in his signature dark sunglasses. Rumours have been flying around regarding Knightley's wedding to Klaxons guitarist James Righton, prospective date unknown, and whether the Pirates of the Caribbean actress has requested Lagerfeld to design her wedding dress (Daily Mail).

Other celebrities that attended the event included Yasmin Le Bon, Laura Carmichael, Noomi Rapace and Chloe Moretz, star of hit movie 'Kick-Ass'. Moretz turned up looking particularly stylish for a 15 year old. Indeed, she looked well dressed for anyone of any age, sporting leather trousers, gorgeous teal heels and a jacket seemingly inspired by the 16th century- the combination of which sounds awful, but is, in fact, an embodiment of style.

Dark Shadows Review

OK
There were 1,245 episodes of the gothic soap Dark Shadows between 1966 and 1971, so adapting it into a movie was never going to be easy. The script is an odd mix of smart dialog and random plot-strands, and while Burton gets the style right he never quite finds the tone.

After spending nearly 200 years trapped in a coffin, Barnabas Collins (Depp) is released to rejoin what's left of his wealthy New England family in 1972. The matriarch Elizabeth (Pfeiffer) now lives in the falling-down manor Collinswood with her brother Roger (Miller), her daughter (Moretz) and his son (McGrath), as well as a live-in shrink (Bonham Carter), a caretaker (Haley) and a new governess (Heathcote). But Angelique (Green), the witch who turned Barnabas into a vampire, is still trying to destroy the family.

Hugo Review

Excellent

Based on the Brian Selznick novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret, Scorsese's first family movie combines a young boy's adventure with a cinematic history lesson. It's a celebration of wide-eyed wonder that's a joy to watch, although the title isn't the only thing that's dumbed-down.

In early 1930s Paris, the orphaned Hugo (Butterfield) lives in Montparnasse station, where he scurries through forgotten passageways maintaining the clocks. He learned this skill from his late father (Law), but an automaton they were fixing is his only reminder of his happier childhood. Dodging the tenacious station inspector (Baron Cohen), Hugo worms his way into the life of grouchy shopkeeper Georges (Kingsley), and has a series of adventures with his goddaughter Isabelle (Moretz). When they learn that Georges is forgotten pioneer filmmaker Georges Melies, they decide to help bring him back to life.

Scorsese tells this story with bravura moviemaking trickery, from whooshing tracking shots to wonderfully inventive uses of 3D. He also peppers the screen with witty references to film history from Modern Times to Vertigo, clips from early cinema and flashbacks to the Lumiere brothers' exhibition and Melies' busy studio. Meanwhile, the main plot unfolds with a warmly inviting glow, sharply telling details and a colourful cast of memorable side characters.
Intriguingly, everyone is a bit opaque; like the automaton, the gears turn but we never really understand them.

Butterfield's Hugo may be consumed by an inner yearning, but he's always on guard, providing a watchful pair of eyes through which we see the drama, romance and slapstick of the station. And it's in these details that Scorsese and his cast draw us in. Standouts are Baron Cohen, who adds layers of comedy and pathos to every scene, and McCrory (as Mrs Melies), with her barely suppressed enthusiasm. As usual, Kingsley never lets his guard down: he invests this broken man with a bit too much dignity.

As the film progresses, the passion for the movies is infectious. Scorsese's gorgeous visual approach and writer Logan's controlled cleverness never overwhelm the human story. And even if Melies' life and Paris' geography are adjusted for no real reason, the film's warm drama and delightful imagery really get under the skin, making us fall in love with the movies all over again.

Hugo is a twelve year old boy who lives in Paris and loves mysteries. One day, in 1930, his father presents him with a wind up figure. His father tells him it's a music box that a magician probably built. The only thing missing is the key used to wind up the music box. The keyhole is in the shape of a heart. Hugo and his father want to find the heart shaped key - whose whereabouts is a mystery - so they can make their music box work.

Kick-Ass Review

Excellent
The team behind Stardust brings us the superhero movie we always wanted: brazen, raucous and without a single politically correct moment from start to finish. And yes, it's both wildly rude and great fun.

Dave (Johnson) is a shy New York teen who wonders why no one sticks up for each other. So he creates a secret alter-ego, Kick-Ass, and sets out to make a difference. Of course he gets beaten to a pulp. But he also catches the city's imagination. The problem is that gangster Frank (Strong) thinks he's to blame for a series of setbacks and helps his son (Mintz-Plasse) create a rival hero, Red Mist. But Frank's nemesis is actually a man (Cage) who has turned his 12-year-old daughter (Moretz) into a killing machine.

The Amityville Horror Review

Bad
The original "Amityville Horror"bored critics in 1979, but created a box office bonanza and spawned sevensequels.

Now the studios have commissioned a straight-ahead remake. After all, why go to the bother of writing new stories, or for that matter, coming up with material for another sequel? This way no one needs to thinkof anything at all.

Written by Scott Kosar (the 2003 "Texas Chainsaw Massacre"remake), the new "Amityville Horror" begins in 1974 with a flashbackto the catalyst murders, steeped in darkness and lit by intermittent, flickeringflashes of lightning.

A year later, the Lutz family moves into the creepy housewith the big eye-like windows. George (RyanReynolds) is the second husband of Kathy (MelissaGeorge), who has three children from a previous marriage.
