Columbus, who directed the first three 'Harry Potter' movies, believes audiences would be interested in exploring what happened to them over the next 19 years before the movies' brief epilogue.
Director Chris Columbus has revealed that he would like to make a series of sequels to the Harry Potter movies. He’s “fascinated” by the plotlines and back stories of the main characters, such as Hermione Grainger, Ron Weasley and the boy wizard himself, and would like to explore what happened to them after the books finished.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the 56 year old filmmaker who directed the first three official Harry Potter movies (Sorcerer’s Stone, Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban) said he wants to fill in the 19 year gap between the final book and its epilogue. Columbus is “fascinated about what happened to them” and wants to tell their stories.

However, as he is yet to discuss his plan with J.K. Rowling and is insistent that any such plan should be sanctioned by her, it’s unlikely to come to fruition any time soon, particularly as she is busy scripting the spin-off franchise Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

“I would love to go back and do another one,” he revealed. “I would love to do another movie with those three characters - Harry, Hermione and Ron. I'm just fascinated about what happened to them after the end of the last movie because then they cut to 18 years ahead. There's 18 years there of great Harry Potter stories.”
We don’t think it’s going to happen, as Rowling has previously stated that she made the massive time-jump for the epilogue, in which the grown-up characters can be seen sending their own children off to Hogwarts, specifically so she wouldn’t have to deal with such sequels.
Columbus, who has directed the newly-released Pixels, is famous for writing the scripts of family favourites such as The Goonies and Gremlins and directing Mrs. Doubtfire on top of his Potter exploits.
