Avengers: Age Of Ultron Review

Good

Marvel fans will love the action mayhem in this Avengers sequel, but everyone else will vividly feel the fatigue that has descended over this franchise. After the bright spark of originality in last summer's Guardians of the Galaxy, we're back to the same tired formula involving terrific actors battling for screen time in between gratuitous, brutal action sequences that are so digitally animated that they're technically cartoons.

The film opens in the middle of the action as Captain America (Chris Evans) leads Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye (Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson and Jeremy Renner) to recapture an Asgardian sceptre. Tony then discovers that the sceptre could be useful for Ultron, his artificial intelligence project to create a global peacekeeping force. But this goes badly wrong as Ultron (James Spader) springs to life and decides instead to obliterate humanity to make space for his population of smart machines. So the team races from America to Africa, Korea and Eastern Europe, facing off against Ultron and his super-powered twin cohorts Pietro and Wanda (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen), who of course defect to the Avengers. They also get help from a human-computer entity called The Vision (Paul Bettany).

Yes, there are a lot of characters in this film, and writer-director Joss Whedon is exceptionally good at giving each of them something to do, both dramatically and in the thick of the action. These brief moments of humour and emotional depth are what make the movie enjoyable, giving the solid actors some meaty material to play with.

Captain America: The Winter Solider Marvels The US Box Office As Johnny Depp Suffers Another Flop

It seems there really is no defeating Captain America, as The Winter Solider has topped the US box office again for the third straight week, what's more the movie has now passed the $200million box office mark. Not fairing so well over the Easter holiday however was Johnny Depp, who is suffering another box office flop as Transcendence only managed to enter in 4th place.

Sadly for Depp, Transcendence marks his third box office flop in a row after The Lone Ranger and Dark Shadows.

The weekend box office continues to offer no surprised this week, with the Johnny Depp starrer Transcendence looking like a flop and likely to take fourth place behind previous chart toppers. The real fight is once again between Marvel’s latest blockbuster, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the animated hit Rio 2. The jungle adventure (that’s Rio, in case you’re one of the few out there, who haven’t seen either) is looking likely to take the top spot this week, by the minimal margin of $2 million over Cap.

Despite Johnny Depp's star power, Transcendence is barely making a ripple at the box office.

Rio 2 is predicted to make roughly $27 million over the three day period, while Captain America is predicted similar earnings to last weekend - $25 million, according to Variety. Winter Soldier has grossed almost $510 million worldwide ($175 million domestically), while Rio 2 has tallied $177.2 million ($53 million domestically) through Thursday.

The Lego Movie is sitting firmly atop the highest grossing movies of 2014 list, having raked in over $410 million. The animated film has been a huge hit with cinema goers and critics, although we’re not even half way through the year yet, there’s still time for it be knocked off the top spot.

Captain America Gets Third Solo Movie Slotted Into The Marvel Schedule

Chris Evans

Attention Marvel fans! Captain America 3 is happening! It’s happening soon, in fact, as Marvel have just announced a release date for the third film. Who knew Cap could become such a global superstar! Given Captain America: The Winter Soldier’s record breaking box-office success, the studio has announced the first Avenger’s return for 2016. Marvel will release the as-of-yet-untitled Captain America 3 on May 6, 2016, according to Deadline. Fanboys and girls need not wonder why that date sounds familiar – this is also the release date for another high-profile superhero flick, DC’s Batman vs. Superman, the final title for which is alsp TBA at this point.

Captain America Still
Who wouldn't want more of this?

If that’s not a challenge that Marvel have issued there, we don’t know what is. But it looks like the studio can afford to. Unlike DC, who only have one movie from their potential franchise released at this point (and a not-too-successful one at that), Marvel have been cranking out Avengers flicks since 2004 and frequently reaching the billion dollar success mark with them.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Very Good

This is the Marvel movie that divides the fans from the casual filmgoers, as the movies become more like a TV series in which the world is saved from disaster every week. While it's shot and acted to an unusually high standard, the script treats the characters like pawns to throw at each other rather than real human beings. So while it's hugely entertaining, there isn't a hint of actual tension or suspense.

Now settling into life in the 21st century, super-powered soldier Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and his cohort Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) are horrified when the mysterious, seemingly indestructible Winter Soldier launches an attack on Shield Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on the streets of Washington DC. Suspected of being on the wrong side, Steve and Natasha set out to find out what's up, drafting in angry veteran Sam (Anthony Mackie) and his whizzy flying-wings accessory. Meanwhile, Shield boss Pierce (Robert Redford) is carrying on with launching a wildly heavy-handed security system for America.

Marvel show-runner Kevin Feige works hard to make these movies fit loosely into the overarching mythology while standing on their own. But this is the ninth time these superheroes have had to save the world since 2008's Iron Man, and it's getting a bit tired. This chapter introduces a perviously unseen darkness in the evil agency Hydra, but the real innovation here is the use of gritty Bourne-style direction for the lucid action sequences.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Trailer

Following events during World War II and his confrontation with Nazi adversary the Red Skull, Steve Rogers awoke 70 years later to find that the world had changed almost beyond recognition. He is now reluctantly a part of superhero law enforcers S.H.I.E.L.D., led by Nick Fury who more than once makes Steve question the ethics of the group and epitomises the blurred line between good guys and bad guys. There are people he can trust though, namely Natasha Romanoff AKA Black Widow; a fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. spy who embarks alongside him on a mission to tackle the latest global threat. However, when a member of S.H.I.E.L.D. is attacked, they find themselves in mysterious circumstances and start to wonder if someone's keeping something from them. As Rogers fights off a myriad of assassins, the real threat starts to surface in the form of the Winter Soldier.

'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' is the sequel to 2011's 'Captain America: The First Avenger'. Based on the Marvel comics by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, it has been directed by Primetime Emmy-winning brothers Anthony Russo, Joe Russo ('You, Me and Dupree', 'Community') with a screenplay by collaborative writing duo Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely ('Thor: The Dark World', 'The Chronicles of Narnia', 'Pain & Gain'). It is set to hit the UK on March 28th 2014.

What You Might Have Missed In The 'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Trailer [Trailer]

Chris Evans Scarlett Johansson Samuel L Jackson Robert Redford

Captain America: The Winter Soldier had its first official trailer go viral this week (24 Oct.) and whilst it gives us a reasonable look at what we can expect from the the return of Chris Evans as the first Avenger, there may have been certain elements that you could have missed in the action-packed preview.

Captain America
The Winter Soldier trailer leaves plenty of questions

We get to see plenty of Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Samuel L Jackson returning as Nick Fury. In all it looks as though the film has a strong S.H.I.E.L.D. presence, but this doesn't give us a great indication of what the film might offer. As for the potential bad guys, it looks as though Robert Redford might have a few sinister ideas up his sleeve and the masked badass we see here and there might be his accomplice, but what does it all mean?

Nick Grimshaw Oversees Massive Drop In Radio 1 Listeners

Nick Grimshaw Chris Evans Chris Moyles

Nick Grimshaw may have gained some new fans and listeners since moving to the coveted breakfast slot at the BBC's flagship radio station, but overall, his move to the main slot has seen listener numbers plummet by a massive 1 million people. The drop in numbers gives the high profile spot it's lowest audience numbers in over a decade and has called into question the BBC's commitment to Grimshaw as a DJ.

Nick Grimshaw
Grimmy has lost a substantial amount of listeners

The 29-year-old successor to Chris Moyles, who left the Radio 1 breakfast slot last September after 12 years of holding down the morning fort, has seen audience figures fall to the same number as when Moyles arrived in the slot. The audience numbers for the breakfast show, then presented by Sara Cox, were at an all-time low, but were taken to new heights thanks to the popularity of Moyles. However this may not spell the end of Grimmy, as he was tasked with increasing the number of young listeners tuning in to the station, even if that meant sacrificing some of Moyles' older listeners. According to the new figures, compiled by Rajar, Grimshaw brings in roughly 5.58 million listeners through the week.

Whedon, speaking to the entertainment website, said "I knew right away what I wanted to do with him, he's always trying to destroy the Avengers, goddamn it, he's got a bee in his bonnet. He's not a happy guy, which means he's an interesting guy. He's got pain. And the way that manifests is not going to be standard robot stuff. So we'll take away some of those powers because at some point everybody becomes magic, and I already have someone [Scarlet Witch, a new character] who's a witch."
