Eddie Murphy may have been on the movie making scene for a long time, but he doesn’t seem to have picked up any flair for directing. His stint directing Harlem Nights in 1989 didn’t wow the critics, even the positive reviews are tinged with negativity, “Not as bad as you might think, but not all that good either”, Ken Hanke remarked, while Ebert labeled it “An uninspired cross between Cotton Club and the characters of Damon Runyon, told in cliches so broad you keep waiting for it to poke fun at itself, but it never does.” Ouch.
Let’s hope the critics are kinder to Chris Evans when he finally takes the directing plunge.
