Years before the beloved family film hit the big screen in 2001, comedian Farley landed the lead role and he had recorded almost all of the voice work for the project before a drug overdose claimed his life at the age of 33.

A two-and-a-half minute clip of him as Shrek alongside Murphy's Donkey was posted on producer John Garbett's website two years ago (13), but largely went unnoticed until it was referenced in new documentary I Am Chris Farley, which is currently in cinemas in the U.S.

Following Farley's death, fellow Saturday Night Live alum Mike Myers took on the role - he has portrayed the grumpy ogre in four films and two TV specials.
