The sequel to 2011's 'Thor' $7.1 million in Thursday-night previews and Friday-midnight screenings, its studio reported on Friday.

According to Box Office Mojo, 'Thor: The Dark World' surpassed its predecessor on opening its debut, which earned $65.7 million in a May weekend release two years ago.

The newest Marvel instalment sees Australian actor, Chris Hemsworth, return as the hammer yielding 'Thor' who attempts to deal with the after math of 'The Avengers' (2012) and restore order in the universe. However an ancient enemy re-emerges, so old it's older than the universe itself, and seeks revenge on the world that once plunged him into darkness.

'Thor' fights to save all nine realms from this primeval race led by 'Malekith', an enemy so fierce 'Thor' has to turn to his disgraced half-brother 'Loki' (Hiddleston) for help.

The most challenging journey yet for 'Thor' leads him to reunite with his love interest, Jane Foster (Portman), and they work together to save an endangered Earth. This is an epic tale of bravery and great sacrifice which may explain why cinemagoers have chosen to watch this over the weekend.
