'Jurassic World' Success Confirms Hollywood's Starving Us Of Our Favourite Creatures

Chris Pratt Steven Spielberg

The astronomical success of 'Jurassic World' just proves that dinosaurs aren't explored enough in film these days. Sure, people may be desensitised to the terror of the prehistoric monsters - at least, more so than they were in 1993 upon the arrival of 'Jurassic Park' - but this extraordinary re-telling has broken box office records.

Nick Robinson and Ty Simpkins in Jurassic WorldYep, kids are definitely not bored of dinosaurs

It has its criticisms and, of course, it doesn't quite have the same effect on audiences as its original predecessor, but 'Jurassic World' has successfully managed to cast some much-needed cinematic nostalgia upon the lovers of the Steven Spielberg classic, so much so that its opening has become the highest-grossing debut of all time.

'Jurassic World' Was A Challenge For Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard Chris Pratt

Turning into an action movie star was a new thing for Bryce Dallas Howard, the actress better known for comedy-dramas like 'The Help' and '50/50'. But in 'Jurassic World' she dives right into the fray, all while wearing a white business outfit and high-heels.

To prepare for her role as park executive Claire, Howard trained with UFC champion Pete Williams, who was also her on-set driver. "He was so helpful," she says, "because as someone who is a professional athlete, he really knew how to take care of your body. And I was like, 'Hey man! I've got to do all this heel running, can you give me some tricks?' He was awesome, and really helped me."

'Jurassic World' Gives Chris Pratt Another Franchise

Chris Pratt

When filmmaker Colin Trevorrow cast Chris Pratt as the lead in 'Jurassic World', he had his doubts. At the time, Pratt was known only as that loveable goofball from 'Parks and Recreation'. "I really love improvisational comedic actors," Trevorrow says, "and you see them in my films again and again - Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass. So I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't bringing him in because that was a comfort zone for me. Ultimately we found something that certainly wasn't really improvisational and it isn't really that comedic. We found a real character."

Chris Pratt stars in 'Jurassic World'Chris Pratt stars in 'Jurassic World'

Before filming 'Jurassic World', Pratt proved his action blockbuster chops in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. His new challenge was to play an animal trainer who has a relationship with his dinosaurs. "That's a tough thing to accomplish, especially when a dinosaur is an animated character," Pratt says. "So I did some research. I got to hang out with some pretty awesome animal trainers. There was one guy who trains vicious animals like bears, tigers and lions. I went to his ranch, spent the day seeing him interact with these animals, and this was a big part of the posture that I adopted. I just wanted this to be real, to create an organic relationship between man and beast that is going to strike some emotional chord in people."

Jurassic World Review

Very Good

With studios afraid of anything new or original, it's not surprising that the dinosaurs are back on-screen nearly 15 years after the rather disappointing Jurassic Park III. The good news is that this film has a clever script and solid characters to go along with the first-rate digital work. So even if the effects kind of take over the movie in the final act, it's still a great ride.

The massive island resort Jurassic World has been running safely for a decade off the Costa Rica coast, so it needs ever-scarier attractions to bring in visitors. The owner Masrani (Irrfan Khan) has been instructing his top scientist (BD Wong) to genetically engineer a bigger, scarier species, and he's come up with a beast called Indominus rex. Park manager Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) has her doubts, but her velociraptor trainer Owen (Chris Pratt) is downright furious when he finds out. Sure enough, just as Claire's nephews (Ty Simpkins and Nick Robinson) arrive for a visit, the I-rex escapes and threatens the 20,000 visitors on the island.

The screenplay sets everything up in fine disaster movie style, with quickly explained back-stories to add some emotional undercurrents to the big-scale chaos. There's also, of course, a requisite villain in the form of the meathead Hoskins (Vincent D'Onofrio), who thinks dinosaurs could be used by the military and welcomes this catastrophe as a chance to prove his point. Thankfully, the cast dives in with gusto, adding hilarious personality touches to every scene. Pratt is terrific as the swashbuckling action-man, nicely set against the feisty Howard, who trumps him by doing all her action scenes in heels. Simpkins and Robinson have a lively adventure all their own that adds to the film's overall appeal. And there are superb side roles for the talented likes of Omar Sy, Judy Greer and Jake Johnson that add both humour and emotion.

'Jurassic World' Star Chris Pratt Contemplates Whether Or Not Kids Still Love Dinosaurs

Chris Pratt

Has the dinosaur become boring? That's what Chris Pratt questions on contemplating the themes of his new movie 'Jurassic World'. Yes, the original 'Jurassic Park' remains a classic, but the question is whether kids today are still both terrified and enchanted by these prehistoric creatures.

Chris Pratt in 'Jurassic World'Chris Pratt admits he'd love to see a real life Mosasaur

To the younger generation who are used to incredible computer graphics and enhanced horror on their screens, 'Jurassic Park' with its 90s fear factor and largely unconvincing animatronics (compared to what we have these days) may seem laughably unexciting - even if the parents still jump in terror at the scary bits. 'Jurassic World' is a brave attempt to re-capture that exhilarating cinematic experience.

Chris Pratt - Jurassic World Interview

Chris Pratt talks about Jurrasic World

'Jurassic World' star Chris Pratt talks about the themes explored in the new dinosaur movie, compared with what we saw in the original 1993 movie 'Jurassic Park'. Plus he reveals exactly which dinosaur he'd want to go and see first at the legendary theme park.
Colin Trevorrow takes over Steven Spielberg's original role as director in the film, which also co-stars Bryce Dallas Howard and Omar Sy among others. The movie sees the actual park on Isla Nublar officially open for business, but after a smooth ten years, they need something new to grip their visitors once again. Unfortunately, this turns out to be a major mistake.

Five Reasons Why 2015 Is The Year Of The Blockbuster

Cast your mind back to 2014, a year in which US box-office takings fell by 5% compared to the previous year. There were many memorable films, from Oscar winners like Birdman to highly anticipated adventures like Interstellar

Interstellar screenInterstellar's $673million tally wasn't out of this world

But what 2014 lacked was a consistent stream of killer blockbuster titles. Sure, there was Transformers: Age of Extinction - 2014's biggest film - and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, the year's next highest-grossing movie. And superhero fans were well-catered for, with Guardians of the Galaxy topping a list that included Captain America, X-Men and Spider-Man

Chris Pratt Frets Over Scary 'Jurassic World' Motorcycle Stunt

Chris Pratt may be used to stunt work by now, following superhero epic 'Guardians of the Galaxy', but that apparently didn't make him any less nervous when it came to performing yet more stunts on the set of the new 'Jurassic World' movie.

Pratt plays Owen Grady in the movie; a motorcycle enthusiast and Velociraptor trainer; so of course, this meant he had one of the most stunt-heavy roles in the whole film. Jurassic World - Motorcycle and Stunt Featurettes

Years after the horrific failure of John Hammond's Jurassic Park project, and him later taking the blame for the "incident" in San Diego, InGen has continued its research into the genetic creation of prehistoric creatures. InGen has succeeded in many of the places where Hammond failed, however, as Jurassic World opened to smash success. After years of success, though, visitors are starting to dwindle at the park, leading to the creation of a new genetically engineered dinosaur. This one is smarter, faster, and more dangerous than any of the previous creatures, but when it breaks out of its cage, the island is faced with a threat that the world has never seen before.

When John Hammond first created InGen and prepared Jurassic Park, it was a colossal failure. When Jurassic World was later opened for the public, a lot had been learnt from Hammond's mistakes, and the new amusement park opened without any problems. But when visitors began to dwindle, something drastic had to be done. Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard), the park operations manager has organised to have a hybrid dinosaur created, and needs the dependable and knowledgeable Velociraptor trainer Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to ensure the enclosure is safe for the new dinosaur. But when it eats its twin, and Grady arrives to inspect it, the Indominus rex breaks free, bringing havoc and destruction in its wake.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star opened with a monologue which saw him produce a guitar and tell the audience “I know I’m not half the singer that Ariana Grande is, but I am technically three times her body weight. So the math works out.” Addressing wife Anna Faris, Pratt also joked about the time the two “had sex and a baby popped out.”

Chris Pratt

Marvel's monumental sci-fi hit Guardians of the Galaxy has topped the North American box-office, six weeks after it opened in theaters. In one of the slowest cinema weekends of the year, Guardians took $10.2 million between Friday and Sunday to take its overall takings to more than $294 million.

However, there was little to beat and ticket sales were down 23 per cent on the same weekend last year. With the major studios retiring away to prepare their major fall realises, there were no new entries in the Top 10, with the highest ranking newbie - musical drama The Identical - taking 11th place.

And in case you were wondering, yes, it definitely deserves the title.

Apparently, Guardians of the Galaxy isn't only the best Marvel flick, it's also the most profitable.

Chris Pratt Dave Bautista

It’s official, Guardians of the Galaxy is the movie of the summer and it could end up becoming the movie of the year, if it continues it’s mega box office run. Now in its fifth week at theatres, the ‘little comic book movie’ is showing no signs of loosing steam as it continues to edge closer to the $300million mark at the US box office. The film, which stars Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista is looking to become the first movie of 2014 to hit $300million milestone at the domestic box office.

"Turtles" And "Guardians" Dominate This Weekend's Box Office, While "Expendables 3" Is Just... Expendable

Chris Pratt Sylvester Stallone

With the weekend almost over (sigh) it’s time for a box office report. Unsurprisingly for the middle of August, this one features a whole lot of guns, explosions and testosterone galore. Let’s start with Expendables 3, which despite ample promotion and a whole line-up of established Hollywood tough guys, didn’t really impress in terms of ticket sales.

Expendables 3
Nope. Just no.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, on the other hand, once again dominated the chart, despite boasting a similarly mindless, but well-muscled script. The franchise starter made around $28.4 million, according to early estimates from Rentrak, via USA Today.

Why Chris Pratt Initially Turned Down 'Guardians Of The Galaxy'

Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt, the American actor now considered one of the most in-demand star in Hollywood, has revealed that he initially turned down the opportunity to audition for Guardians of the Galaxy - Marvel's megahit that is likely to spawn a billion dollar franchise.

Pratt initially passed on the lead in Guardians, fearing it would go the same way as his failed attempt to star in G.I Joe a couple of years earlier.

'Guardians Of The Galaxy' Can Go Anywhere From Here

Chris Pratt

After storming the global box office last week with a take of more than $200 million and counting (it had the biggest August opening in US history), Guardians of the Galaxy fans immediately started asking what's next for these new Marvel heroes. Since it's set in space, crossover possibilities with the Avengers aren't obvious (except perhaps Thor), so the filmmakers have a lot of leeway as they move forward.

Guardians of the GalaxyGuardians of the Galaxy could prove to be a mega-franchise

Director-cowriter James Gunn will be back for the sequel, but it's producer Kevin Feige who coordinates the all of the films set in the Marvel universe (except Sony's Spider-man and Fox's X-men franchises). Feige admits that the biggest question for the Guardians moving forward centres on Chris Pratt's Peter Quill, aka Star-Lord. Namely: who is his father? The film tantalisingly teases this question at the very end, and Feige has admitted that the answer "would certainly be part of a next Guardians adventure".
