When filmmaker Colin Trevorrow cast Chris Pratt as the lead in 'Jurassic World', he had his doubts. At the time, Pratt was known only as that loveable goofball from 'Parks and Recreation'. "I really love improvisational comedic actors," Trevorrow says, "and you see them in my films again and again - Jake Johnson, Aubrey Plaza, Mark Duplass. So I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't bringing him in because that was a comfort zone for me. Ultimately we found something that certainly wasn't really improvisational and it isn't really that comedic. We found a real character."

Before filming 'Jurassic World', Pratt proved his action blockbuster chops in 'Guardians of the Galaxy'. His new challenge was to play an animal trainer who has a relationship with his dinosaurs. "That's a tough thing to accomplish, especially when a dinosaur is an animated character," Pratt says. "So I did some research. I got to hang out with some pretty awesome animal trainers. There was one guy who trains vicious animals like bears, tigers and lions. I went to his ranch, spent the day seeing him interact with these animals, and this was a big part of the posture that I adopted. I just wanted this to be real, to create an organic relationship between man and beast that is going to strike some emotional chord in people."

Pratt says the trickiest thing was to rein in his comedic instincts. "I had to be careful if I started being goofy," he says, "or going to my normal comedic bag of tricks - some of which I used in 'Guardians of the Galaxy', and certainly Andy Dwyer from Parks & Rec is a full embodiment of that type of clowning around. If I wanted to have fun, it was all in my repartee with Claire [Bryce Dallas Howard], sparring with her and getting her goat. But for the most part, it was deadly serious.

And besides, Pratt has a third franchise in which he also gets to be silly: the Lego movies. "I always knew it: as soon as I have three franchises to my name...," he says, laughing about this unexpected turn in his career. "No, I never could have known. No way. That's pretty rarefied space to be in. I am feeling very blessed and overcome with joy. But I never thought I would have three franchises."
