It’s official, Guardians of the Galaxy is the movie of the summer and it could end up becoming the movie of the year, if it continues it’s mega box office run. Now in its fifth week at theatres, the ‘little comic book movie’ is showing no signs of loosing steam as it continues to edge closer to the $300million mark at the US box office. The film, which stars Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista is looking to become the first movie of 2014 to hit $300million milestone at the domestic box office.

Forbes estimates that over Labour day weekend the movie should take in around $18 million, $14 million of which should be accumulated between Friday and Sunday. But before the weekend is over the movie will have surpassed the year’s other hit, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which also happens to come from Marvel studios.

Still we all know that 2014 has been a slow summer at the box office. Beyond Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy the cinema hasn't exactly been the place to be over the past three months, indeed only seven movies have so far this summer managed to take over $200million domestically.

But luckily for Guardians it's more than just the best of an uninspiring bunch, the film has received acclaim from critics and fans alike, with a sequel already said to be in the works.

Plus it looks as if the cash is just going to keep rolling in for Guardians, as it’s still to open in China, Japan, Germany and Italy. Yes earlier this year those markets added a healthy 150million to Captain America’s worldwide gross meaning that its Marvel rival should be right on track to break some more records.

But if there's anyone left out there wondering what all the fuss is about, then why not listen to Marvel's main hero, Robert Downey Jnr, who this week told the Toronto Star newspaper that Guardian of the Galaxy is “in some ways” the “best Marvel movie ever. Yes that's quite the endorsement coming from Robert who goes on to say that "it's odd for someone with - on occasion - an ego the size of mine to actually say that!” Well Robert, you said it not us.
