'Top Five' Dramatises Chris Rock's Stand-Up

Chris Rock

With his new film 'Top Five', Chris Rock is taking aim at his own business, telling the story of a stand-up comedian who has become a movie star. He's also caught in the craziness of celebrity as he tries move between comedy and drama. But the comparisons with his own life end there, he says.

Rock says that the idea sparked when he took a serious stage role. "The cool thing about the play is it was really dramatic and it was really funny," he says. "I knew coming into this movie that I got confidence from the play that made me realise, 'OK, the drama is as important or more important than the comedy.' And I tried to take the lessons I learned and apply them to 'Top Five'. So, yeah, it is a little more personal and grounded than anything I've done."

Top Five Review

Very Good

Chris Rock has essentially written and directed a film based on one of his own standup routines, and the result is as hilarious as we'd expect. It's also a clever skewering of show business, from the difficulty of changing a public image to the never-ending intrusion of the press. But while the film is consistently smart and funny, it's also a bit of an inside joke, taking on an industry that's so absurd that ridiculing it might be too easy.

Rock plays Andre Allen, a former comic who found international fame playing a furry police officer in three Hammy The Bear movies. But now he wants some respect as an actor, so he has produced a serious period drama called Uprize!, about the 18th century Haitian revolution. On the day of the film's gala premiere, Andre grants an interview to New York Times journalist Chelsea (Rosario Dawson), who follows him around town as he runs errands both promoting the film and preparing for his heavily publicised wedding to reality TV star Erica (Gabrielle Union). Against his better judgement, he begins to drop his guard with Chelsea, introducing her to members of his family and inviting her to his bachelor party, which is being staged for Erica's show.

The film's one false note is the whiff of a romantic-comedy as Andre and Chelsea begin to open up to each other. Fortunately, Rock allows this to merely simmer in the background as he gets on with his wicked commentary about life in the entertainment industry. The dialogue is packed with pithy observations, sarcastic gags and knowing jabs that could only come from someone who has lived (and survived) this crazy lifestyle. Even more interesting are the darker undercurrents. Andre is a recovering alcoholic who isn't sure he can still be funny now that he's sober.

Chris Rock Cedric The Entertainer J.B. Smoove Tracy Morgan Rosario Dawson Gabrielle Union

Chris Rock's latest movie 'Top Five' is about a comedian trying to make it big in the world of serious acting, while his personal life is thrust more and more into the public eye. If you think that doesn't sound too far from any American comedian's real life, you might be right.

Is Chris Rock playing himself in 'Top Five'?

While well-known for his TV show 'Everybody Hates Chris', his voice role in the 'Madagascar' films and for his stand-up shows, it seems that Chris Rock hasn't had too much trouble with success in his career. However, he still maintains that his character represents damn near most black comedians' lives. 'I play a guy named Andre Allen; a comedian, actor, kind of famous, a cross between Chris Tucker, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle, Kevin Hart, Eddie Murphy - like an amalgamation of all of us and whatever people think of us', he reveals.

Chris Rock Knew Exactly What He Was Doing With His 9/11 Monologue On SNL

Chris Rock

This week, Chris Rock and Prince took over SNL. Let’s talk about that. So Rock’s opening monologue was by far the best writing the show has seen this season – it was sharp, provocative, topical and well performed – basically everything you’d expect from Rock and not as much from SNL anymore. The reactions, however... you could tell Rock would get some flack, when his Boston bombings jokes prompted an uncomfortable “Ooh” from the studio audience – which, by and large, is there to laugh.

Chris Rock
Chris Rock knew exactly what he was doing, when he poked and prodded at the irritable Twitter crowd.

Sure enough, the Twitter storm was swift and terrible, proving that, in the public’s eyes at least, it’s always too soon to joke about terrorist attacks. But, clever dude that he is, that was exactly the point Rock was making: it’s never too soon. Corporate America jumped at the opportunity on the very next day, so why should comedians hold back?

Robin Thicke Continues Relentless Barrage Of Apologies To Paula Patton At BET Awards

Robin Thicke Chris Rock

Robin Thicke made some choices at the BET award and, well, some of it worked, at least. Thicke exposed his vulnerable side, yet again, during his time onstage. Thicke performed his ballad  Forever Love, accompanying himself on the piano. More importantly, before the teary-eyed performance,  he offered yet another dedication to estranged wife Paula Patton.

Robin Thicke
Robin Thicke seems to have missed the memo.

"Good evening, my name is Robin Thicke, I’d like to dedicate this song to my wife, and say, 'I miss you, and I’m sorry.' This is called 'Forever Love,'" he called out from the stage of the Nokia Theater on Sunday.

The Top 5 Worst Rated Adam Sandler Movies

Adam Sandler Kevin James Chris Rock Drew Barrymore Jennifer Aniston Nicole Kidman

Adam Sandler's alleged humour responds with teenage boys, and teenage boys at heart, around the world. His films contain enough toilet humour and slapstick comedy to rival The Three Stooges. Unfortunately, few of them have ever gone down well with the critics.

Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler stars in Blended - but will it become one of his worst films ever?

His latest film, Blended, starring Drew Barrymore follows two single parents as they endure a disastrous blind date. Evidently despising each other, they are forced to meet again following a mix up and somewhere end up on vacation in Africa along with their numerous children. It's a fairly obvious cocktail, disgust will turn to love on the plains of Africa and the two will manage to unite their families. Along the way there'll be a host of silly antics and misunderstandings which will quickly be swept under the carpet whilst the sun sets on a romantic first kiss.

Kristen Stewart Earns $500,000 For Charity After Spending 15 Minutes Alone With Middle Eastern Prince

Kristen Stewart managed to earn half a million dollars in only 15 minutes, and if that wasn't impressive enough, the money she made was donated straight to charity. The Twilight star caught the attention of an unnamed Middle Eastern Prince, who was so taken with the actress that he forked out the huge sum for just 15 minutes of her time.

According to film producer Harvey Weinstein, Kristen was helping to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy when Weinstein was approached about spending some one-on-one time with Kristen by the mysterious, ultra-rich Middle Eastern monarch. Initially dismissing the requests, Kristen soon caught wind of what was happening and was actually willing to meet with the high-paying Prince, leading Weinstein to broker a deal to arrange the meet-up. Sounds seedy doesn't it?

Grown Ups 2 Review

Terrible

There was nothing remotely notable about 2010's Grown Ups, and now we have a sequel that's even lazier. Without any actual plot to speak of, the movie merely strings together a series of unfunny scenes that include cheap gags and childish vulgarity but never a punchline. Sure, the scattershot approach might occasionally touch on recognisable situations, but there isn't a genuine laugh in the whole film.

After the reunion in the original movie, Lenny (Sandler) has moved back to his hometown with pals Eric, Kurt and Marcus (James, Rock and Spade). They're planning a big party just like in the old days, complete with a 1980s theme. But their children are getting older and have their own issues, including first dates and driving tests. And in Marcus' case, the kid is a teen thug (Ludwig) he only just discovered he had. But the real problem is that the guys have just sparked a turf war with a gang of idiotic fratboys from the nearby university. And now they have to prove once and for all who's really cool.

As with the first movie, you get the feeling that everyone on screen has somewhere better to be. There's no character development at all, since there are so many people spread across so many short scenes. Hayek, Bello and Rudolph are back as the guys' wives, but get exactly one thankless thing to do each. And it's not much better for the supporting cast of A-list cameo players like Buscemi (as a driving instructor), Lautner (as the fraternity leader) and so many more recognisable actors that you begin to wonder what dirt Sandler has on all of them.

'Grown Ups 2' Reviews: Adam Sandler's Comedy Is "Lazy", "Gross" And "Lousy"

Adam Sandler Kevin James Salma Hayek David Spade Chris Rock

Adam Sandler's Grown Ups 2 has been universally panned by critics. The movie is released today (12th July) in US cinemas. Early reviews indicate the movie will be a huge success with teenagers across the States but will do anything but impress grown-ups.

New York Post's Sara Stewart said the film "lurches from one gross-out scene to another" without any regard for "continuity or logic". Following in a similar line of thought is Claudia Puig of USA Today, who said Grown Ups 2 is "lazy, scattershot and anything-but-mature".

The comedy sequel to 2010's Grown Ups, Grown Ups 2, is ready to hit cinemas this summer. All of the film's stars showed up on the red carpet in New York last night at the premiere of the new movie that looks to be hilarious. According to Yahoo! Directed by Dennis Dugan, in Grown Ups 2 we'll see Lenny Feder (Sandler) three years on from the events of Grown Ups where he has moved back to his small hometown with his wife (Hayek) and kids to reunite with his old friends (Rock/James/Spade) and their families. The film will focus on the kids' last day of the school year and the inevitable mishaps and unpredictable surprises. The tagline for the film is "Just because they're a little older doesn't mean they've grown up" and certainly, don't expect any high-brow humour here.

Yippie Ki-Yay! Die Hard's Bruce Willis Defends Right To Own Guns

Bruce Willis Tony Bennett Chris Rock

Just as Quentin Tarantino was quizzed relentlessly about America's gun laws ahead of the release of Django Unchained, this week it was Bruce Willis' turn to defend the use of firearms in his new movie, A Good Day To Die Hard. Whereas the acclaimed director shrugged off the questioning with consummate ease, Willis was only too happy to comment and gave a pretty surprising answer.

Most Hollywood liberal types are pretty keen to back President Obama's gun-law proposals, though Willis remains cautious. "I think that you can't start to pick apart anything out of the Bill of Rights without thinking that it's all going to become undone," the actor told the Associated Press. "If you take one out or change one law, then why wouldn't they take all your rights away from you?" Willis - whose films have grossed over $2 billion in North American alone - reprises his most famous character John McClane in the fifth instalment of the Die Hard franchise, hitting theaters on February 14, 2013. The Hollywood hard-man makes a living out of shooting bad guys, though Willis played down a link between Hollywood and massacres such as those in Connecticut and Colorado last year. "No one commits a crime because they saw a film. There's nothing to support that," Willis said. "We're not making movies about people that have gone berserk, or gone nuts. Those kind of movies wouldn't last very long at all."

The likes of Tony Bennett, Chris Rock and Amanda Peet spoke in favour of President Obama's gun-law proposals at an event in Washington DC on Wednesday (February 6, 2013).
