Chris Rock Signs Huge Deal With Netflix For Two Stand-Up Specials

Chris Rock

Chris Rock has been persuaded to make a long-awaited comeback to stand-up comedy, reportedly signing a whopping $40 million contract with Netflix for two live special shows.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the huge deal of $20 million per stand-up comedy performance will mark Rock’s return to live comedy for the first time in eight years. The deal is way more than current comedy heavyweights like Amy Schumer or Louis C.K. can currently command, and a record high for Rock himself.

Academy Apologises For "Tone-Deaf" Asian Jokes During Telecast

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Chris Rock George Takei Ang Lee

The organisers of The Oscars have apologised for the “tone-deaf” portrayal of Asians in various jokes at this year’s ceremony, after a group of actors and filmmakers of Asian descent complained of being offended.

The Academy was embroiled in a vociferous diversity row in the run-up to the 2016 awards, which were held at the end of February, after all 20 acting nominees were white for the second year in a row. Though it subsequently pledged to double its number of women and minority members by the end of the decade, it has once again found itself at the centre of controversy.

Actress Jada Pinkett Smith has spoken for the first time since last weekend’s Oscar ceremony, where host Chris Rock took a swipe at her during his opening monologue. Linda Dunn, the woman name-checked by Oscars host Chris Rock as he led his daughters in a competitive fund-raising effort by selling Girl Scout cookies to the assorted celebs at the ceremony on Sunday night, has spoken about being referenced in person on national TV.

After the stunt led to a massive 13,000 boxes of snacks being sold, and a reported (but unconfirmed!) $65,000 raised for his daughters Zahra and Lola’s troop, the New Jersey mom he name-dropped said that she has no hard feelings about what happened.

As well as cracking a few zingers at the expense of the lack of diversity in the nominations list, Oscars host Chris Rock used the ceremony as a platform for his two daughters to sell Girl Scout cookies on Sunday night – and made a pretty impressive amount of money doing so.

“I have missed most of girls scout cookie season,” the 51 year old emcee explained as he led his two daughters, Zahra and Lola, up and down the aisles at the Dolby Theatre to sell Mint Thins and various treats to the audience – and taking the opportunity to guilt trip a few A-listers into coughing up contributions, including Tina Fey, Mindy Kaling, Henry Cavill and Christian Bale.

The Academy Awards Boycott: Both Sides Of The Debate

Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Chris Rock Will Smith Jada Pinkett-Smith

This year's Academy Awards season is turning out to be a pretty intense ride, with the uproar over the nominations' lack of cultural diversity causing a division in the entertainment world. While some people are saying that they're planning to boycott the ceremony when it was revealed that not one black actor or director had been nominated, others are saying that the situation has been blown way out of proportion.

Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will SmithJada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith are skipping the 2016 Oscars ceremony

So what exactly is the debate? This is year is the second year in a row that not one person of colour has been nominated for an Oscar in the major categories. It's not even that it hasn't been an option, especially when you look at the Golden Globe nominations and the calibre of movies featuring black lead actors in 2015 like 'Chi-Raq', 'Creed', 'Beasts of No Nation', 'Straight Outta Compton' and 'Concussion'. Last year, admittedly, did see fewer options. However, 'Selma' was one of the biggest movies of the year (and probably one of the most important in this decade) but still only managed to scoop a Best Original Song prize. Justin Simien's 'Dear White People' wasn't recognised at all and nor was Denzel Washington's 'The Equalizer'.

The Great Hip Hop Hoax Review

Excellent

Both engaging and eye-opening, this spirited documentary recounts an outrageous story with humour and honesty, revealing some nasty truths about the music industry in the process. The big issues are prejudice and greed, of course, but the film thankfully keeps its focus on a friendship that is pushed to the breaking point.

Billy Boyd and Gavin Bain first met in their hometown of Dundee in 2000, discovering that they had a mutual love of rap music as well as the talent to write and perform extremely catchy tunes. But record labels and performance venues just laughed in their faces: dismissing the mere idea of Scottish rappers. Then in a moment of frustration, they tell a London club that they're from Southern California, and suddenly everyone wants to hear more of their music. So they re-record their demo with American accents and create elaborate alter egos so they can convince everyone that Silibil n' Brains are partying L.A. skater dudes. Soon they have a big-time manager (Shalit) and a lucrative deal with Sony Records.

Filmmaker Finlay makes terrific use of Boyd and Bain's own video footage, capturing their crazy stunts and buoyant energy. We also see their skills as musicians in clips from their riotous performances. And we know that they have a bigger plan: to become superstars before they expose the hypocrisy in the music business. So it's fascinating to watch everything spiral out of their control. While living the high life and appearing all over the media, their debut album stubbornly refuses to come together, delayed even further when Sony goes through a restructuring. And it isn't easy living 24 hours a day as a fictional character.

Though Grown Ups 2 is only marginally behind on its first days of release, it can't be an easy pill to swallow for actor Sandler who not only had his movie panned by critics before it was even released, but also had to relive the ordeal of being mauled by a cheetah whilst on safari in Africa on David Letterman's show.

Chris Brown And Rihanna Spotted Making Out In New York’s ‘Griffin’ Nightclub

Chris Brown Rihanna Nicole Scherzinger Karrueche Tran Dave Chappelle Tyson Beckford Chris Rock

Chris Brown and Rihanna, back together? It’s certainly looking that way, after the couple were spotted smooching at New York City nightspot Griffin this week. Just one week after Brown and Nicole Scherzinger were forced to play down rumors of a romance, the ‘Run It!’ singer appears to have reignited his controversial relationship with Ri-Ri.

According to the reliable folk at E! Online, Brown was initially joined by Bow Wow at his own table inside the club, before Rihanna arrived and sat in a separate booth. Later in the evening, Brown climbed over to join Rihanna at her table before somewhat bizarrely taking off his shirt. It seemed to do the trick though because before long, the former couple were dancing and making out. Brown eventually left the club just before 4am, with Rihanna following suit around five minutes later. Representatives for both stars are remaining suspiciously silent on the story and let’s not forget: Brown is still on probation for beating the Barbadian singer before the Grammy Awards in 2009. Nevertheless, they have remained close and even shared a friendly kiss at the MTV Video Music Awards last month.

Brown’s girlfriend Karrueche Tran was noticeably absent from the club this week, though Dave Chappelle, Tyson Beckford and Chris Rock were all in attendance. In a further twist, one eyewitness claims to have spotted Rihanna and Chris Brown leaving the Gansevoort Hotel together the following day. Coincidence?

Death At A Funeral Review

OK
If you've seen Frank Oz's 2007 British comedy, it feels rather pointless to watch this almost word-for-word remake. Sure, the setting is different, but the uneven mixture of slapstick and sentiment are still here, so newcomers might find it diverting.

Aspiring author Aaron (Rock) is preparing his father's funeral amid all kinds of distractions. His novelist brother Ryan (Lawrence) jets in from New York, but won't help at all. His wife Michelle (Hall) is pushing him to move out from their mother's (Devine) house. The boyfriend (Marsden) of his cousin (Saldana) has just accidentally been given a hallucinogen. Uncle Russell (Glover) is on the rampage. And a small man (Dinklage) has something shocking to announce.

Through all of this, Aaron's hypochondriac best friend Norman (Morgan) tries to maintain some semblance of order. But he's useless.

The Aristocrats Review

Excellent
In the dark weeks following 9/11, Comedy Central's management surprisingly decided not to cancel its taping of The Friar's Club Roast of Hugh Hefner. During the recording of the event, hundreds of comedians and urban luminaries found themselves shocked out of their post-terrorism pall by none other than Gilbert Gottfried, who delivered what the New York Times' Frank Rich, an attendee of the taping, called "the greatest dirty joke ever told."

Tracing its origins to vaudeville, this "comic's joke" is tantamount to a secret handshake among comedians and their friends. Although versions vary widely, it basically goes like this: A man seeking show biz representation walks into a talent agent's office and describes his family's act, which consists of various illegal and unspeakable activities including incest, bestiality, necrophilia, and an explosion of bodily fluids. After the man finishes, the appalled agent asks what this horrible act is called, to which the man responds, "The Aristocrats!"

Excellent
Neil LaBute, best known for his ultra-dark comedies In the Company of Men and Your Friends and Neighbors, breaks from his traditional mold and lightens up a tad with Nurse Betty, which -- again -- isn't going to win any awards for sensitivity.

There's a chance Al Gore might have wrestled the presidency from George W. Bush in 2000 if he could've mustered 1/100th of the charisma and common sense Chris Rock displays as politician-for-the-people Mays Gilliam in Head of State. An alderman serving the toughest neighborhood in Washington, D.C., Gilliam is selected by an unidentified liberal party to run for president when their candidate dies in a plane crash. The political pundits know Gilliam's chances are slim, but they hope he'll attract minority support so their frontrunner (a well-cast James Rebhorn) can cruise to victory in 2008.

Once on the campaign trail, though, Gilliam discovers that he's in tune with the people and ready to be the country's next leader. Encouraged by his brother (Bernie Mac) to speak his mind, Gilliam climbs the public opinion polls, courts a headstrong hottie from his 'hood (Tamala Jones), and puts a scare into his opponent - the incumbent Vice President (Nick Searcy) who keeps reminding us he's "a war hero and Sharon Stone's cousin."

OK

Smart, sharp political satire it's not. But Chris Rock's "Head of State" -- the comedian's directorial debut in which he plays a black man running for president -- mixes a few stinging zingers into its generally crowd-pleasing brand of snickers and knee-slappers.

When asked if he'll step in for the Democratic candidate who died when his plane and his running mate's plane "crashed into each other over Virginia," Mays Gilliam (Rock), a Washington, D.C. alderman, has a split-second flash forward to being shot at his inaugural address before even finishing the line "My fellow Americans..." But he accepts the nomination anyway.

He's provided a specially trained, sworn-to-secrecy "super whore" -- a post-Clinton perk devised to help Democratic candidates avoid sex scandals.

Dogma Review

Good

Thanks to all the is-it-or-isn't-it-blasphemy controversy surrounding "Dogma," writer-director Kevin Smith has added a tongue-in-cheek disclaimer to the opening of this renegade ribbing of the Catholic church that is so amusing ("...God has a sense of humor, just look at the platypus") it will have audiences in stitches even before the first line of dialogue.

Whether or not you'll think the movie stays this funny will depend on how sensitive you are about your position on the religious yardstick, your threshold for soapbox pontification and what it takes to gross you out.

Smith, the maverick Generation X satirist responsible for ragtag underground hits "Clerks" and "Chasing Amy," makes no bones about testing the limits of irreverence and good taste in this ironically snappy and smart-mouthed theological deliberation.
