In the wake of his friend Clark Kent's monumental sacrifice, Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince are determined to recruit the most powerful superheroes on the planet to help them fight a new menace that Lex Luthor predicted was coming to the Earth. They are the intrepid Arthur Curry or Aquaman, king of the sea; the young but lightning-fast Barry Allen, also known as The Flash; and the half-man half-machine known as Victor Stone or Cyborg. Together they must fight an army of parademons that have descended upon them, apparently in search of the Mother Box that transformed Victor Stone into the biomechanical creature he is. They are serving the villainous extra-terrestrial Steppenwolf, who will stop at nothing to get what he wants and take over the world. But as you can probably work out, these heroes have an advantage in that Superman is far from dead as they initially suspected.

Faith is a topic Martin Scorsese can't quite shake, courting controversy with complex films like The Last Temptation of Christ (1988) and Kindun (1997). And now he has adapted the Shusaku Endo novel into this profound exploration of religion. As seen through the eyes of a 17th century Jesuit priest in Japan, it's a dark, contemplative film that sometimes feels a bit too murky for its own good. But it also has bracing insight into our need to believe.
At the centre of the story is the disappearance of Father Ferreira (Liam Neeson) as Japan cracks down on foreign religions in 1640, brutally persecuting local converts. Back in Portugal, two of Ferreira's proteges, Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Garrpe (Adam Driver), volunteer to go in search of him. But the journey is dangerous, requiring them to trust exiled Japanese drunk Kichijiro (Yosuke Kubozuka) to sneak them into a rural village near Nagasaki. There they find an underground group of devout Catholics who are hiding from the cruel Inquisitor Inoue (Issei Ogata). After they split up to search for Ferreira, Rodrigues is captured by Inoue and interrogated by his interpreter (Tadanobu Asano), who is determined to show him that Christianity can never take root in Japan.
The film has an eerie resonance in today's divisive global climate, where everyone seems determined to protect their own culture from any outside influence, especially a religion that seems to run counter to long-held traditions. But the film's deeper themes explore the idea that we all have a yearning to understand the world and our existence in a way that makes sense to us. So debating the relative benefits of Christianity and Buddhism is actually beside the point. When the movie lets these ideas simmer under the surface, it has real power, especially in Rodrigues' experiences, which are gruelling both physically and emotionally.

This is such a ripping true story that it can't help but grab hold of the audience, even if the film never quite breaks through the surface. A story of tenacious triumph in the face of seemingly impossible odds, it also offers Miles Teller a terrific against-type role as a beefy young boxer who simply won't take no for an answer. And the entire cast is just as surprising, adding textures to a movie that's a bit too straightforward for its own good.
This is the story of Vinny Pazienza (Teller), a young boxer who wins two world championships in two weight classes with the help of his father Angelo (Ciaran Hinds) and his trainer Kevin (Aaron Eckhart). Then at the top of his game, he breaks his neck in a car crash and is told he may never walk again, let alone fight. But Vinny is determined to remain the champ, so he returns to training, even though an injury could leave him permanently disabled. Kevin reluctantly agrees to train him, pushing him up into yet another weight class. And seeing the publicity possibilities, father-and-son promoters (Ted Levine and Jordan Gelber) set up a massive Vegas comeback match.
Writer-director Ben Younger shoots this with a steady authenticity, charging inexorably through the story in a way that echoes Vinny's singleminded determination. Along the way, there are strained relationships, a variety of physical and emotional obstacles, intense boxing matches and, of course, a few emotive training montage sequences. The story is so strong that the film can't help but be engaging and even rousing, even if there are very few shadings along the way. Vinny never seems to doubt himself at all, his family only barely objects to his potentially life-threatening decisions, and his opponents are clearly going down for the count.

Father Sebastião Rodrigues (Andrew Garfield) and Father Francisco Garrpe (Adam Driver) are Portuguese Jesuit priests who set out on a dangerous mission to Japan in a bid to find their mentor Father Cristóvão Ferreira (Liam Neeson) who has been missing for sometime. It's the seventeenth century, and despite what the Bible might say about the importance of spreading the Christian word of God throughout the world, there are just some places on this Earth that brutally forbid it. Needless to say, Ferreira has been ousted from the church to which he belongs after publicly denouncing his faith to save his own life. Rodgrigues and Garrpe are about to discover just how violent the world can be towards everything that they've ever worked for when they arrive in Japan. Surely there is no test of faith that can match the journey that lies ahead for them.

Ewan McGregor is cast as both Jesus and the devil in this imagined chapter which depicts Jesus' journey during the period of his 40 days of fasting and praying in the desert. In this American Drama film Jesus has to battle with the binary oppositions of good vs evil whilst existing in a state of desperation as he has only been surviving on water and praying. He comes in to contact with the Devil and becomes taunted by him as he wants him to make a decision over a family that are in a crisis.

'McCanick' was one of Cory Monteith's final film projects, telling the story of a drug addict accused of murder. The movie is due to premiere, alongside Monteith's other final film 'All the Wrong Reasons', at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
Cory Monteith's final film McCanick is due to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 9th. In one of his final roles, Monteith plays Simon Weeks a drug addict and recently released prisoner. According to reports by MTV, Weeks is suspected of a murder he committed whilst in his teens, he is tracked down by two detectives: Eugene 'Mack' McCanick (David Morse) and Floyd Intrator (Mike Vogel).

The trailer suggests Monteith's character is likely innocent of the suspected crime. One character warns the irritable McCanick "he's done bad things but he is not a killer", whilst the detective retorts "you don't know him as well as you think." This could be a red herring in itself, but we shall have to wait and see!
Martin and Claudia are two lawyers who were formerly in a relationship. They are roped into a case together on the defense team of an alleged terrorist, following a tragic bombing in a London market one morning in November. It may be a difficult job to being with, but things don't get any easier when they covertly discover that their client was actually assigned as an undercover spy for MI5 and was supposed to lead them to the bombers before the attack. They soon begin to realise that their every move is being closely watched, and with threats on their life by some powerful people following their investigations and risky suggestions in court, they must escape the controlling force that is the government before they are eradicated - though it could be too late.

Scarlett Johansson began previews of the Broadway production of Tennessee Williams' classic play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof this week. The Hollywood actress plays the lead role of Maggie the Cat in the forthcoming show, which officially opens to the public at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on January 17, 2013.
One of the most famous plays of all time, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is set at the plantation home of a wealthy cotton tycoon Big Daddy Pollitt. Exploring themes of greed, superficiality, mendacity, sexual desire, repression and death, the play won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1955. Ciaran Hinds stars as Big Daddy, while the Tony Award winning actress Debra Monk plays Big Mama. Though best known for her roles in The Avengers and Lost in Translation, Johansson has a passion for the stage and won a Tony for her role in Arthur Miller's A View From The Bridge.

Tennessee Williams’ award winning play, which has won the Pulitzer Prize, and has been revived several times on Broadway already, will set the scene for Johansson’s return to the stage; her first since her Tony-winning performance in a 2010 revival of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. Benjamin Walker will join her on stage. The actors will play Maggie and Brick in a new production that is expected to open Jan. 17 at New York's Richard Rodgers Theatre. Ciaran Hinds (Game of Thrones) will play Brick’s plantation-owner father, Big Daddy. Tony winner Debra Monk will play Big Mama.
The show’s lead producer will be Stuart Thompson, and Johansson, who worked with him on “View From the Bridge,” has wanted to play Maggie for some time, and her box office star power proved strong enough for the Broadway producers to bring back a play that is already familiar to many theatre-goers. It’s hard to pigeonhole Johansson as an actress, given the range of roles she’s fulfilled. More art-house performances, notably with Woody Allen, include; Match Point, Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, but she has also featured in many Hollywood blockbusters, like Iron Man 2 or The Avengers.
Civil War veteran John Carter wakes up in a strange, barren land with no idea of where he is. He soon discovers that he has been transported to the populated Barsoom, which is more commonly known as the planet Mars. He becomes involved in a massive conflict on the planet, with civilisation on Barsoom dying as a result. The beautiful Princess Dejah Thoris tells John that fate has brought him here and that the population and existence of Barsoom depends on him, which John reluctantly accepts.

In the 1970's, former spy George Smiley (who is in forced retirement), is called in to investigate the news that there is a Soviet mole of high-ranking within 'the Circus' - the in-house name for MI6 - who has been there for years making him one of George's former colleagues. George manages to narrow his search down to four men, all colleagues of his. His rivalries and friendships with each of the suspects will make it difficult for George to locate the mole who is eroding at the centre of the British government.

Make no mistake: Amazing Grace is not a complex movie. The good guys are good and the bad guys aren't so much bad as they are yet to become good. Such a simple and optimistic moral vision may seem antiquated to some, but Amazing Grace doesn't apologize for its old-fashioned piety. As the action starts, Wilberforce (Ioan Gruffudd) undergoes a religious conversion. His long-abandoned childhood faith has once again stirred his heart and moved him to commit to doing whatever he can to improve the world. Already a member of Parliament, he asks several of his friends -- including the clergyman John Newton (Albert Finney), who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace" -- if he should continue his political career or move on to a more spiritual pursuit. At all of his friends' urging, Wilberforce chooses politics and not long after takes an unpopular stand on the issue that will dominate his political career thereafter: the slave trade.

An ostensible Nazi-hunting thriller that's far too impressed with its supposed moral ambiguity, The Statement is about former Vichy militia Pierre Brossard (Michael Caine) who, back in 1944, helped the Nazis round up and execute seven Jews in a small French town. It's based on the true story of Paul Touvier, who ordered such an execution on June 29, 1944 in southwestern France, and was sentenced to life in prison in 1995.

Of all the movies I've seen depicting The Troubles in Northern Ireland -- and there have been some powerful films on the subject -- "Titanic Town" is the first one that really drove home to this outsider what it must have been like to live in a neighborhood where sniper fire is an everyday occurrence, where the hulks of bombed-out cars sit in the town square and where a quiet residential street can be invaded at any moment by columns of soldiers, armed to the teeth and coming to drag away one or more of your neighbors.
The most visceral moment in this tense but hopeful film, about an Irish Catholic mother of four who takes it upon herself to stop the undeclared war, comes in the middle of the night when the teenage daughter of this housewife-activist wakes up to the sight of paramilitary guerillas taking up attack positions in her front yard. The scene gave me chills, plain and simple.
Our passport into this perilous world is Bernie McPhelimy, a real-life woman of dogged determination who in the 1970s jumped headlong into the quagmire that was (and still is) the bitter, violent, terrorizing clash between Catholic Irish Republicans and Protestant, Britain-backed Unionists.
