Cindy Crawford is an American supermodel.
Childhood: Cindy Crawford was born in DeKalb, Illinois. Her parents are Jennifer Sue Crawford-Moluf and John Dan Crawford. When she was 10, her brother died of leukaemia. She was scouted by a photographer aged 16 and subsequently entered the Elite Model Management's Look of the Year contest. After becoming a runner-up, the agency in Chicago agreed to represent her. She graduated as valedictorian from DeKalb High School and her academic achievements were enough to earn her a scholarship to study chemical engineering at Northwestern University. She dropped out to pursue her modelling career and later signed with the Elite New York modelling agency.
Modelling career: Cindy Crawford was a major star in the 80s and 90s and appeared on the cover of Vogue, W, People, Harper's Bazaar, Elle, Cosmopolitan and Allure. She is 5 feet 9 inches and is known for her trademark mole on her upper lip. She has also been known for resembling 70s and 80s model Gia Carangi. She has been in fashion campaigns for Gianni Versace, Escada, Revlon, Ink, Omega, Maybelline and Clairol. She has appeared in several music videos including for George Michael's 'Freedom '90', Jon Bon Jovi's 'Please Come Home For Christmas' and Duran Duran's 'Girl Panic'. In 1991, she donned her iconic red Versace dress at that year's Academy Awards. In 1992, she released her first exercise video 'Cindy Crawford: Shape Your Body' which was followed up by two more videos. Between 1989 and 1995 she hosted MTV's 'House of Style'. In 1995, she was the female lead in 'Fair Game' which was badly received both critically and commercially. In 2001, she appeared in the equally as unsuccessful 'The Simian Line'. In 1988, she made her Playboy debut and appeared in the magazine again later in the year. She quit modeling in 2000 but returned to it in 2011. During her modelling hiatus, she worked on various things including a beauty line 'Meaningful Beauty for Guthy-Renker' and a furniture line 'Cindy Crawford Home Collection'.
Personal life: Cindy Crawford married Richard Gere in 1991 but divorced him in 1995. She married Rande Gerber in 1998 and had two children; Presley Walker and Kaia Jordan. She has done much charity work for cancer organisations and is an honorary board member of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.
