Besides the five new series on ABC’s roster this season, the network is also renewing a number of its hit shows. Returning favorites include the Shonda Rhimes-penned Scandal (Rhimes is also debuting the thriller How To Get Away With Murder this fall).
The renewal notices came pouring late on Thursday to rescue a number of rookie shows from broadcasting limbo. The lucky winners include Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Resurrection and The Goldbergs as well as established hits Once Upon a Time (for Season 4), Castle (for Season 7), Scandal (for Season 4)and Grey’s Anatomy (for a record-breaking Season 11).
Good news for hardcore Joss Whedon fans and those impressed with his newest show, Agents of SHIELD – the Marvel series has gotten a full-season pickup from ABC. This means that the company has bought the rights to the second half of the season, rounding out Agent’s first run to a full 22 episodes. The show is the third new fall show to get a full-season pickup and so far it’s ABC’s premiere investment.
Whedon has practically struck gold with this one.
While SHIELD opened to smashing ratings, having the best opening for a drama series in the past four years, the switch from its Thursday premiere to a less profitable Tuesday 8pm slot caused a notable dip in ratings. Nevertheless, last week’s episode averaged a respectable 7.9 million viewers, making Agents of SHIELD the second highest rated show of the hour. In addition, the show averaged 2.9 million in that mythical, oh-so-coveted by advertisers 18-49 age range.
With a few minor exceptions, Tuesday was not a good night for the networks.
On a night, when almost all network shows slipped in terms of ratings, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ended up being the biggest loser, with a 34% drop. The show, which could have become the network’s brand new flagship series, delivered 11.9 million viewers on its premiere last week, but it failed to retain that audience this time.
Agents didn't quite manage to take a stand against traditional network favorites.
The night’s runner-up was The Voice, attracting a total of 14.2 million viewers to NBC’s 8-10pm slot, according to preliminary ratings, courtesy of The Wrap. It had to take second place to a special episode of CBS’s NCIS, which, despite a minor slip, still managed to dominate Tuesday ratings. An unexpected boost in viewers was measured for NBC’s Chicago Fire, while The Mindy Project on Fox managed to stay flat from its previous episode.
Finally, after months of anticipation, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired tonight. Now, as the dust settles and Tumblr quickly gets flooded with Episode 1 gifs and stills, it is about time for a headcount. The episode attrackted nearly 12 million viewers, according to Reuters – easily making it the biggest debut of the past four years. This according to Nielsen data from ABC. In addition, Agents became the most viewed in the 18-to-49 age group, which is typically the most attractive market segment to advertisers.
Nearly 12 million tuned in to watch Clark Gregg reprise his role as Phil Coulson.
Despite spawning gifs in the thousands, S.H.I.E.L.D. still didn’t manage to top the Tuesday ratings winner. Once again, NCIS dominated the air with 19.5 million tuning in, according to Nielsen data from CBS.
After months and months of careful promotion, tonight is finally the night!
The premiere of Marvel’s eagerly anticipated series Agents of SHIELD is fast approaching – the show will air tonight, September 24th at 8PM. Agents will focus on the work of the non-superhero part of Marvel comics – the men and women working for the fictional organization SHIELD, which we’ve gotten a glimpse at with Nick Fury, Maria Hill and, of course, Clark Gregg’s agent Phil Coulson within the Avengers franchise. Agent Coulson will be a central character in this adaptation of the Marvel universe, the brainchild of Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and the latter’s wife, Maurissa Tancharoen. The trio has already achieved a lot of success together with the Emmy-winning web musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, as well as the FX series Dollhouse.
Gregg is no stranger to the Marvel Univers, nor to working with Joss Whedon in particular.
Before the highly anticipated premiere, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about working on Agents this time. The two spoke about their experiences of working within the sci-fi genre in general and within the Marvel universe specifically. One thing even casual Marvel fans know is that the company generally adheres to a very strict code of discretion across all its platforms. However Agents of SHIELD has so far been kept under especially tight wraps. Of course, fans at Comic-Con and, more recently, those tuning into ESPN have been treated to special previews of the season and there have been some unclear hints as to the characters, villains and overall plot. However, Marvel wouldn’t be the marketing machine that it is, if its marketing execs didn’t know to keep the most crucial information secret, sometimes even requiring blood oaths, according to Tancharoen.
'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' premieres tonight (Tuesday 24th September) on ABC. The show, based on the group of comic book heroes, has been written by Joss Whedon.

The pilot picks up the story from where the Avengers: Assemble film ends, sometime after they've trashed New York. However, there's a distinct lack of superheroes as the series focusses on the special agents, according to the NY Times.
Adele Wheeler is the single mother of 13-year-old Henry and suffers from depression, rarely leaving her house except for reasons she can't avoid. One of those reasons arises when she has to take Henry last minute school shopping over the Labor Day weekend at the end of the summer. Whilst out, they bump into Frank; a not so cuddly looking man who is bleeding profusely and asks for their help. Adele and Henry are hesitant to come to his aid, but eventually drive him to their home where the situation takes a strange turn when they become his hostages. It turns out that Frank is a convicted killer who has escaped jail and is desperate to get on the move in spite of his injuries. Initially terrified, Adele and Henry soon realise that they are not in any danger and help him win freedom once again.
Joss Whedon intends 'Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' to be accessible to an audience who have no previous knowledge of the Marvel feature films, despite crossovers including Clark Gregg's reprisal in the role of Agent Phil Coulson.
Joss Whedon has spoken about Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the pilot of which he has co-written and directed.
Joss Whedon at the premiere of Much Ado About Nothing at the Apollo Theatre in London.
Whedon has co-written the pilot episode with his brother Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen (Jed Whedon's wife). The pilot was revealed to fans at the San Diego Comic-Con last month. Whedon not only co-wrote the pilot but directed it. It is unknown how much input Whedon will have should the series go ahead, however he is confident that "I've got the best writers and actors I could so I could do this, and that's the best way to run a show."
The trailer for 'Agents of SHIELD' is out, and it looks good!
Anyone else's heart break after Clark Gregg's Agent Coulson died on The Avengers? Well good news if it did because Agent Coulson didn't really die and Gregg's character is taking a staring role in the new ABC series Agents of SHIELD. But wait, there's more good news, because the first full-length trailer for the Marvel movie spin-off series has been released online, and it looks awesome.
Set in the same universe as it's movie brethren, Agents of SHIELD (which stands for Strategic Homeland Intervention Enforcement and Logistics Department) will follow the not so super agents who work behind the scenes and side by side with their super-powered heroes in a post-Avengers set world. As well as Gregg, the cast also features Chloe Bennett (Nashville), Iain de Caestecker (Adam Barlow on Coronation Street), J. August Richards (Angel) and judging by a clip from the trailer, we might also have Coby Smulders' Agent Maria Hill on board too.
ABC are willing to ditch a part of their highest rated show to make room for Joss Whedon's new project.
ABC will consolidate its tired looking dance competition Dancing with the Stars into one solitary evening next season, opening up its Tuesday schedule for Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D an exciting new project from Avengers director Joss Whedon. The move was announced to advertisers at the Lincoln Center on Tuesday (May 14, 2013) after ratings for 'DWTS' continued to fall.
Sharing continuity with the Avengers franchise, 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' revolves around the character or Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) who oversees many of the division's field operations. Whedon has already confirmed Coulson is alive in his character, despite his apparent death in The Avengers movie. Elsewhere, Ming-Na Wen plays Agent Melinda May, an ace pilot and weapons expert, while Brett Dalton plays Agent Grant Ward, a talented but asocial man in his early 30s. Chloe Bennet plays civilian recruit Skye, a computer hacker described as "bubbly and goofy."
The new teaser for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. trailer peaks interest in the show.
After much speculation and a teaser on Vine, which did little more than heighten the tension, the full teaser for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered this Tuesday. Cue excited screaming. Besides the fact that #coulsonlives – yes, Marvel and ABC are clearly up to date on their social media promotion – in the new teaser we get a look at some of the other characters. Even though, let’s be honest, all anyone cares about at this point is the beloved Phil Coulson. According to MTV, Clark Gregg will team up with Ming-Na Wen (“Agent Melinda May”), Elizabeth Henstridge (“Agent Jemma Simmons”), Iain De Caestecker (“Agent Leo Fitz”), Brett Dalton (“Agent Grant Ward”), Chloe Bennet (“Skye”), and J. August Richards to “work the cases that S.H.I.E.L.D. hasn’t classified” as the oh-so-cool Coulson calls it.
When Ward, overflowing with confidence, gets a promotion, the secrets of what S.H.I.E.L.D. actually does and through who (#coulsonlives!) are revealed to him. His team includes the aforementioned agents, and is headed by none other than agent Phil Coulson. It’s not all fun, games and fighting monsters though. From the trailer it becomes obvious that the people have formed some kind of civil resistance, as Skye comes in with her line “We will rise against those, who shield us from the truth,” which would have been wholly more impressive if it wasn’t interrupted by Coulson discovering her in the back of her van. So we can pretty much conclude that whatever Skye’s deal is, she will be a series regular. Now, after the whirlwind of news, following last week’s announcement that ABC had picked up the show, we already have a cast, an air date, a trailer and of course the original piece of news – the return of agent Coulson. Commence production of fanart in 3… 2… 1…

Marvel Comics were responsible for one of the highlights of New York Comic Con 2012: the appearance of Clark Gregg AKA Agent Coulson.
The head of Marvel Television took to the stage at the comic book convention, to update fans with the latest developments in the land of Marvel TV and that included the news that Agent Coulson lives on!
Clark Gregg is the first actor to have been cast in Joss Whedon’s forthcoming movie S.H.I.E.L.D; the news had the gathered throng chanting “Coulson, Coulson, Coulson,” to demonstrate their love both for the character and of course, for the actor that has played the role in a number of Marvel movies, including Iron Man, Thor and Avengers Assemble as well as the Ultimate Spider-Man TV series. A trailer of some of Coulson’s finest moments, revealed the words “An Honest Man. An Honorable Man. A Man of S.H.I.E.L.D… We thank him for his bravery.” By the time the trailer has scanned to his death scene, it read “We remember his Legacy. Always. Rest in Peace, Agent Phil Coulson 1969 - 2012.” By the time the trailer had drawn to a close, Gregg looked to be crying, according to the report from comicbookresources.com.
Like four action movies mashed into one, it's often difficult to know where to look while watching this busy blockbuster. It takes a while to get going, but once writer-director Whedon hits his stride, the film rockets through a series of frantically entertaining set pieces.
When mischievous Loki (Hiddleston) steals the tesseract from top-secret agency Shield, director Nick Fury (Jackson) and his sidekicks (Gregg and Smulders) call in their superheroes: Tony (Downey), Steve (Evans), Natasha (Johansson), Bruce (Ruffalo) and Clint (Renner), better known as Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk and Hawkeye. And Loki's brother Thor (Hemsworth) also turns up. But calling them a team is misleading, as they find it tricky to put rivalries and mistrust aside to save the world from Loki's apocalyptic plan.

Odin is one of the main gods on the planet of Asgard, when his son Thor acts naively and brings bring chaos in their peace-loving world he tells Thor he's unworthy, casts him out and revokes all his godly powers.
Car crashes seem to be ripe material for screenwriters looking for a hook to hang their movies on. From Intersection to Crash to Crash (the other one), this seems to be a well-travelled genre. 11:14 adds another notch in that post, a Rashomon-like story of a half-dozen characters who all intersect on one quiet road at 11:14 PM, which results in the loss of at least one life, one male member, a lot of cash, and endless property damage. The immediate before and after of the event contain even more chaos, including a gunshot wound for Hilary Swank.. The film tells each story in sequence, each time adding a little more context to this bizarre series of events, and each time causing us to care a little bit less about what exactly happened. It's not terrible filmmaking, but the plot's "cleverness" will hardly knock your boots off.
Nothing fascinates the media as much as itself. So it should come as no surprise that one of the best films (so far) about the 1990-91 Gulf War is a drama about the reporters who covered it.
As part of its bid to make 24-hour news an institution, CNN sent producers Robert Wiener (Michael Keaton) and Ingrid Formanek (Helena Bonham Carter) to Baghdad in August 1990 to cover the brutal Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The HBO film Live from Baghdad is the story of how Wiener and CNN overcame adversity to become the only network to continue broadcasting from Baghdad during the U.S. air strikes.
