Clark Gregg Kerry Washington

Besides the five new series on ABC’s roster this season, the network is also renewing a number of its hit shows. Returning favorites include the Shonda Rhimes-penned Scandal (Rhimes is also debuting the thriller How To Get Away With Murder this fall).

The renewal notices came pouring late on Thursday to rescue a number of rookie shows from broadcasting limbo. The lucky winners include Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Resurrection and The Goldbergs as well as established hits Once Upon a Time (for Season 4), Castle (for Season 7), Scandal (for Season 4)and Grey’s Anatomy (for a record-breaking Season 11).

After A Successful Start, ABC's Agents Of Shield Gets Full Season Pickup

Clark Gregg Joss Whedon

Good news for hardcore Joss Whedon fans and those impressed with his newest show, Agents of SHIELD – the Marvel series has gotten a full-season pickup from ABC. This means that the company has bought the rights to the second half of the season, rounding out Agent’s first run to a full 22 episodes. The show is the third new fall show to get a full-season pickup and so far it’s ABC’s premiere investment.

Joss Whedon, Saturn Awards
Whedon has practically struck gold with this one.

While SHIELD opened to smashing ratings, having the best opening for a drama series in the past four years, the switch from its Thursday premiere to a less profitable Tuesday 8pm slot caused a notable dip in ratings. Nevertheless, last week’s episode averaged a respectable 7.9 million viewers, making Agents of SHIELD the second highest rated show of the hour. In addition, the show averaged 2.9 million in that mythical, oh-so-coveted by advertisers 18-49 age range.

Tuesday Night Not A Good Time Slot For Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D, With A Third Of Premiere Audience Lost

Clark Gregg

On a night, when almost all network shows slipped in terms of ratings, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D ended up being the biggest loser, with a 34% drop. The show, which could have become the network’s brand new flagship series, delivered 11.9 million viewers on its premiere last week, but it failed to retain that audience this time.

Agents didn't quite manage to take a stand against traditional network favorites.

The night’s runner-up was The Voice, attracting a total of 14.2 million viewers to NBC’s 8-10pm slot, according to preliminary ratings, courtesy of The Wrap. It had to take second place to a special episode of CBS’s NCIS, which, despite a minor slip, still managed to dominate Tuesday ratings. An unexpected boost in viewers was measured for NBC’s Chicago Fire, while The Mindy Project on Fox managed to stay flat from its previous episode.

Agents Of SHIELD Premieres To Good Ratings And Even Better Reviews

Finally, after months of anticipation, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aired tonight. Now, as the dust settles and Tumblr quickly gets flooded with Episode 1 gifs and stills, it is about time for a headcount. The episode attrackted nearly 12 million viewers, according to Reuters – easily making it the biggest debut of the past four years. This according to Nielsen data from ABC. In addition, Agents became the most viewed in the 18-to-49 age group, which is typically the most attractive market segment to advertisers.

Nearly 12 million tuned in to watch Clark Gregg reprise his role as Phil Coulson.

Despite spawning gifs in the thousands, S.H.I.E.L.D. still didn’t manage to top the Tuesday ratings winner. Once again, NCIS dominated the air with 19.5 million tuning in, according to Nielsen data from CBS.

The Buildup Is Almost Over For Marvel And ABC's "Agents Of SHIELD"

Clark Gregg Joss Whedon

The premiere of Marvel’s eagerly anticipated series Agents of SHIELD is fast approaching – the show will air tonight, September 24th at 8PM. Agents will focus on the work of the non-superhero part of Marvel comics – the men and women working for the fictional organization SHIELD, which we’ve gotten a glimpse at with Nick Fury, Maria Hill and, of course, Clark Gregg’s agent Phil Coulson within the Avengers franchise. Agent Coulson will be a central character in this adaptation of the Marvel universe, the brainchild of Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and the latter’s wife, Maurissa Tancharoen. The trio has already achieved a lot of success together with the Emmy-winning web musical, Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog, as well as the FX series Dollhouse.

Clark Gregg, Much Ado About Nothing Premiere
Gregg is no stranger to the Marvel Univers, nor to working with Joss Whedon in particular.

Before the highly anticipated premiere, Jed Whedon and Tancharoen spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about working on Agents this time. The two spoke about their experiences of working within the sci-fi genre in general and within the Marvel universe specifically. One thing even casual Marvel fans know is that the company generally adheres to a very strict code of discretion across all its platforms. However Agents of SHIELD has so far been kept under especially tight wraps. Of course, fans at Comic-Con and, more recently, those tuning into ESPN have been treated to special previews of the season and there have been some unclear hints as to the characters, villains and overall plot. However, Marvel wouldn’t be the marketing machine that it is, if its marketing execs didn’t know to keep the most crucial information secret, sometimes even requiring blood oaths, according to Tancharoen.

"Much Ado About Nothing" - Joss Whedon's Take On The Bard

Joss Whedon Nathan Fillion Clark Gregg

These days Joss Whedon is known as the clever writer/director behind Marvel’s giant, over-produced “Avengers” But before all that, he was known to fans as the mind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the DIY viral sensation Dr Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. Much Ado About Nothing, Whedon’s present-day adaptation of the Shakesperean play, sees the director return to his roots with a film, which relies not on a huge budget and, admittedly, well-executed action scenes, but on sheer wit and goodwill. We see some familiar collaborators of Whedon’s – Clark Gregg, aka agent Phil Coulson, plays governer Leonato, while Nathan Fillion does a hilarious job as Constable Dogberry.

The film opens with the brave and accomplished officer Benedick (Alexis Denisof) arriving at the home of governor Leonato (Clark Gregg), whose daughter Hero (Jillian Morgese) soon comes into the sights of Benedick’s comrade, Claudio (Fran Kranz). Benedick himself is quite the ladies’ man, however he meets his match in Hero’s witty and willful cousin Beatrice. And, as the phrase “meets his match” usually bids, it doesn’t take long for the two to fall in love. It’s a classic Shakespearean tale, retold in Whedon’s incredibly appropriate style. What’s more, Whedon’s adaptation finds poetic resonance with many current issues. Modern society’s rampant abuse of technology, for example is satirized by way of the messengers delivering plot twists via iPhones instead of scrolls, and the occasional clever wordplay (“Forsooth! A Bluetooth!”). Whedon manages to take good ol’ Shakespeare, put him through the mill of his own humor and what comes out is, unsurprisingly, a brilliant, if low-key, adaptation.

Much Ado About Nothing Review

Good

This new version of Shakespeare's romantic farce looks like it was shot on video in the filmmaker's house with his friends over the course of about two weeks, which is exactly the case. It's lively and funny, and occasionally also warm and emotional, but the uneven tone never quite comes together to bring out the passion in the characters. An enjoyable experiment, the film keeps us entertained but refuses to spring to life.

Set in present-day suburbia, the story opens as Don Pedro (Diamond) and his henchmen Benedick and Claudio (Denisof and Kranz) deliver rival gang leader Don John (Maher) to his mob boss brother Leonato (Gregg). A confirmed bachelor, Benedick continues his verbal sparring with Leonato's feisty love-rejecting daughter Beatrice (Acker), while Claudio seeks help in wooing her sweet cousin Hero (Morgese). But Leonato decides to have some fun here, tricking Benedick and Beatrice into falling in love with each other. Meanwhile, the imprisoned Don John is plotting to destroy his brother, while a bumbling detective (Fillion) tries to figure out what's up.

Filmmaker Whedon assembles his cast from actors he worked with in everything from Buffy to The Avengers, creating a loose, relaxed atmosphere that makes the film easy to watch, even though it's in black and white and is spoken in Shakespearean dialect. On the other hand, this kind of mutes the play's romantic highs and tragic lows, evening everything out into a gentle comedy of manners with slapstick touches. Part of the problem is that, if you're unfamiliar with these actors, it's not easy to tell them apart as they are dressed in identical black suits. But the cast is excellent, delivering the dialog with off-handed precision.

ABC's Roster For Next Season Will Include A Number Of New Shows, Including An Avengers Spinoff

Clark Gregg Rebel Wilson

Finally, after weeks of anticipation, ABC is the last of the major networks to announce their series pickups and renewals for fall 2013. But oh boy was it worth the wait. Without a doubt the crowning jewel in ABC’s roster this year has to be Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Yes, that’s S.H.I.E.L.D. as in The Avengers, as in the phenomenally successful Marvel franchise. The story is now coming to the small screen and, to the delight of geeks everywhere, it will be penned by the golden trio of Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. Fans of Whedon’s work will know that the trio have previously worked together on the three-part musical Dr. Horrible. Joss Whedon has also directed the pilot and has a producer’s credit on the entire season. So hopes are definitely running high for this one. But wait, this isn’t even the best part. The best part, in our humble opinion is that Clark Gregg will be reprising his role as fan favorite agent Phil Coulson. Who said we were never seeing him again after he died in Avengers?

Of course, Agents is far from the ABC pickup for next season, but it is by far the most talked about. Some other additions to the network’s roster include Super Fun Night, which stars the hilarious Rebel Wilson, and The Goldbergs. Some of the renewals for next season include (as expected) Modern Family, The Middle, Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Castle, Nashville, Once Upon a Time, Last Man Standing, Revenge and Suburgatory, but the full list hasn’t been announced yet.

Clark Gregg, Avengers Premiere
Gregg will reprise his role as the endearing Phil Coulson, this time on the small screen.

11:14 Review

Good
Car crashes seem to be ripe material for screenwriters looking for a hook to hang their movies on. From Intersection to Crash to Crash (the other one), this seems to be a well-travelled genre. 11:14 adds another notch in that post, a Rashomon-like story of a half-dozen characters who all intersect on one quiet road at 11:14 PM, which results in the loss of at least one life, one male member, a lot of cash, and endless property damage. The immediate before and after of the event contain even more chaos, including a gunshot wound for Hilary Swank.. The film tells each story in sequence, each time adding a little more context to this bizarre series of events, and each time causing us to care a little bit less about what exactly happened. It's not terrible filmmaking, but the plot's "cleverness" will hardly knock your boots off.

Live From Baghdad Review

Very Good
Nothing fascinates the media as much as itself. So it should come as no surprise that one of the best films (so far) about the 1990-91 Gulf War is a drama about the reporters who covered it.

As part of its bid to make 24-hour news an institution, CNN sent producers Robert Wiener (Michael Keaton) and Ingrid Formanek (Helena Bonham Carter) to Baghdad in August 1990 to cover the brutal Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. The HBO film Live from Baghdad is the story of how Wiener and CNN overcame adversity to become the only network to continue broadcasting from Baghdad during the U.S. air strikes.
