Clean Bandit Little Mix Rag'n'Bone Man Louis Tomlinson Ed Sheeran

The battle for this year’s Christmas number one is reaching its final stages and it looks as if Clean Bandit might just clinch it.

The Cambridge trio have already spent six weeks at the top spot with ‘Rockabye’, but according to the Official Chart Company they’re still 4,000 copies ahead of their nearest rival.

This year’s festive chart will be announced on Friday and currently it’s a three horse race between Clean Bandit, Little Mix with ‘Touch’ and Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, who is currently in second place with ‘Human’.

Isle of Wight Festival 2014 Review

If there's something to take away from this year's Isle of Wight Festival, it's probably sunburn. Unlike the mud bath of two years ago, 2014 will be remembered for serving up one of the hottest weekends I can remember for a festival, along with some crowd-pleasing performances. While not every act managed to capture their moment in the sun, all the major names delivered in spades.

Isle of Wight Festival 2014 Review

But it wasn't just the music that made the weekend for many; a real sense of celebration seemed to erupt across the site. Partly fuelled by anticipation over the World Cup and partly because of the good weather, thousands of smiling faces could be seen everywhere. Sunflowers seemed to be an essential festival accessory and many opted for as few clothes as possible with t-shirts looking like they'd gone out of fashion altogether. I've even had to make a note in my diary that it's international flip-flop day on June 20th, just one of the many things I learnt around Seaclose Park this year.

The highlight of Friday afternoon should have really been local boy Tom Odell on the main stage. But his piano led ballads took some time to win the crowd over despite his number 1 album 'Long Way Down'. By the time he'd finished though, the reaction showed that he'd justified his place on the main stage billing.

Chloe Howl, Banks, Jungle: The Future Of Pop In 10 Artists

Chloe Howl Clean Bandit Azealia Banks Glass Animals Sky Ferreira Solange Knowles Kanye West Timbaland

A facet of popular culture that frequently is at the receiving end of derision of ‘indie’ or ‘underground’ circles, pop music is in actual fact often the site of technological and stylistic innovation- channelling the sounds of the underground and disseminating them to the masses.

Timbaland’s fresh production techniques completely altered the pop landscape of the early naughties, whilst recently, professional egotist and sometimes rapper Kanye West’s ‘Yeezus’ injected the stark and abrasive sounds of experimental hip hop into a mainstream context. It’s a continuous and cyclical process of obsolescence and fresh ideas that has sped up as the instantaneous nature of the internet becomes the central tool in the transportation of the cultural to-and-fro.

But who will usher in a new era of pop in 2014? Which artist will emerge brimming with new ideas, or even just provide fresh spins on existing concepts? Here is a list of the ten most likely candidates:

London producers Kye Gibbon and Matt Robson-Scott have banded together to form a new electronic project, Gorgon City, which sees them fuse together elements of house, D&B and garage to create their distinctive pop sound.

The duo were originally individual artists in their own right, known as Foamo and RackNRuin, before they signed to Black Butter Records (Rudimental, Joel Compass, Kidnap Kid) as Gorgon City. 2012 saw them release their debut EP 'The Crypt', which was soon followed up by their 'Real' EP featuring Manchester born singer Yasmin on the title single. The track gave them their first real taste of success as it entered into the UK Singles Chart and even made the top 10 in the Indie Chart. Selling more than 47,000 copies in the UK, 'Real' was landed with the 'Record Of The Week' title from Radio 1; a feat that was soon to be repeated with third single 'Intentions' featuring Clean Bandit.

Clean Bandit - Rather Be Feat. Jess Glynne Single Review

London quartet Clean Bandit are well on their way to landing their first number one with their single 'Rather Be' featuring Jess Glynne - and it's absolutely no surprise. We thought they were good with their quirky classical/electronic/rap venture 'Mozart's House' last year, but this new track really shows that Clean Bandit are serious.

Clean Bandit - Rather Be Single Review

'Rather Be' is simply a mushy love song, be it about a lover, a friend or a family member, but the lyrical soppiness ('As long as we're together, there's no place I rather be') is definitely forgiven over the stunning instrumentation that accompanies it.

They've got the classical effect going on once again in 'Rather Be' with a jovial violin intro that is repeated in the chorus, but it's the flawless layering that really makes this song uniquely brilliant. It's not an unheard of structural method to individually build on sounds and instruments from the start of a song, but some electronic artists can be unjustifiably messy with their song-crafting these days. While the violin is the first sound we hear on the track, it is soon joined by the soulful vocals of Jess Glynne, then some upbeat, video game style synth blips before the slow bass kicks in.
