Jack Reacher: Never Go Back Review

Very Good

The hero from Lee Child's series of novels is back - well, the Tom Cruise version of the hero. He may be a 6-foot-5 blond muscle-man in the books, but Cruise weathered the storm with the unusually smart first movie, and now he returns for a remarkably gritty action thriller that feels like the antithesis of his Mission: Impossible movies. This is an ageing hero who gets hurt and recognises the laws of gravity.

As he roams around America helping strangers, Jack (Tom Cruise) keeps in touch with Susan (Cobie Smulders), who took his old job as commanding officer of a military police base. But just as he decides to drop in to meet her, she's arrested on trumped-up charges. And he is also promptly framed for murder and locked up. All of this happens just as he discovers that 15-year-old Samantha (Danika Yarosh) is his daughter. So Jack and Susan break out of prison and take Sam along as they try to sort out why they are suddenly on the wrong side of the law. Everything seems to trace back to a shady private contractor (Robert Knepper) who has sent a ruthless killer (Patrick Heusinger) to stop them.

In normal action blockbusters, this kind of plot would play out with massive explosions, physics-defying car chases and superhuman characters who take a hit and keep on going. But director Edward Zwick (who directed Cruise in The Last Samurai) takes a much more thoughtful, realistic approach that sometimes makes the film feel like it's moving in slow motion by comparison. Cruise is decidedly mortal in this role, needing to take a moment to recover after every punch. Since he's not invincible, Jack is far more engaging as a character, especially as he grapples with issues surrounding unexpected fatherhood. He also strikes just the right balance of flirtatious camaraderie with Smulders' Susan, never tipping over into a corny action-movie romance.

With S.H.I.EL.D. destroyed, their chances of saving the world once again are looking dangerously slim. Now beginning to question just how much power they have, they are forced to regroup for a mission that could finally see their end.

Sofia Vergara Mariska Hargitay Julianna Marguiles Ellen Pompeo Cobie Smulders Alyson Hannigan Amy Poehler

Who said cutthroat corridors of U.S television was a man's world? Sofia Vergara has proved that the era of the disgustingly high-paid leading man (Laurie, Sheen) may well be over, by not only topping the highest paid TV actress list for a tired consecutive , but taking the top-spot overall.

The actress earned $37 million last year, that's some $11 million more than the top-earning TV actor Ashton Kutcher. The Colombian-born star earns a reported $325,000 per episode for 'Modern Family' - way off the reported $1 million per episode deal that Kaley Cuoco signed on 'The Big Bang Theory' - but Vergara's earnings come from endorsements and licensing deals with Diet Pepsi, CoverGirl, Head & Shoulders, AT&T and Synthroid. As Forbes note, the actress is also the co-founder of Latin World Entertainment - a huge multi-million dollar episode.

There'll be How I Met Your Mother fans with knots in their stomach all day today as they wait anxiously for the final episode of the hit CBS sitcom. It has been a long road for the comedy show which by tonight will have run its course over nine seasons. When "HIMYM" debuted back in the fall of 2005, no one could have predicted the consistent success and comedic legacy of such a simple premise: a man in 2030 telling his two kids the tale of how he met their mother.

How I Met Your Mother Cast
'How I Met Your Mother' Prepares For Its Final Episode This Evening.

An entire series told in flashbacks, HIMYM only revealed the identity of "the mother" at the end of series eight, played by Cristin Milioti. Certain signals from her interaction with Ted (Josh Radnor) lead fans to believe that the mother actually is dead in 2030, and that's why the dad is reminiscing with his kids. This rumour was quickly played down by the cast but shows a keenness amongst fans for a "legen-dary" twist to top of their favourite show.

Safe Haven Review

Weak

Nicholas Sparks strikes again with yet another film based on a misty-eyed novel about tormented seaside romance in the romanticised American South. It's so trapped in Sparks' cliche-ridden universe that we know the entire plot right from the start, including expectations of a maudlin, possibly supernatural twist along the way and an over-sentimental climax. Fans of this sort of thing will love it, but everyone else will struggle to see it as anything more than simplistic rubbish.

The woman in peril this time is Katie (Hough), who is introduced while on the run, dying her hair blonde and jumping on a midnight bus out of Boston. When she arrives in a picture-postcard North Carolina fishing town, she takes one look at hunky shopkeeper Alex (Duhamel) and decides to stay. Not only is he handy with home repairs, but he has two smart, observant young children (Kirkland and Lomax) he's raising on his own. Even Katie's new neighbour (Smulders) thinks she should grab him while he's single. But she is of course running from something, and a tenacious cop Kevin (Lyons) on her trail.

In every movie based on a Sparks novel, we know exactly who is good and evil from the start. Sure enough, Kevin is clearly bad because he drinks vodka and is accompanied by menacing music every time we seen him. We also know there will be a surprise along the way, something that stretches the already fragile story logic beyond the breaking point. And in this film, it's also something cunningly designed to wrench tears from sensitive audience members. But everyone else in the audience will laugh at how inane it all is, bravely resisting the manipulative storytelling all the way to the happiest possible ending.

'How I Met Your Mother' Will Finally Reveal Mysterious Titular Parent In Final Season

Neil Patrick Harris Josh Radnor Cobie Smulders Alyson Hannigan Jason Segel

The co-creator of 'How I Met Your Mother' Craig Thomas has confessed that the identity of narrator Ted Mosby's mysterious future spouse will be finally revealed in the ninth and last season of the show.

The CBS comedy show will make its conclusion in the next season but writers insist that all loose ends will be tied. "The plan has always been to meet this girl at some point", he told TVGuide.com. '[CBS] want to make sure, I guess, that the audience knows they're not going to be jerked around or short changed in any way.' He also mentioned that they wanted to go all out with the new series in its 'final lap', claiming that there will be no 'withholding of fun ideas' and describing the conclusion as a 'carpe diem' type affair.

In case one of our main stars; Neil Patrick Harris, Josh Radnor, Cobie Smulders, Alyson Hannigan and Jason Segel; were to leave the series too early, however, Thomas said that they had 'a Plan A and a Plan B' as to how the series would make its finale. The rest of season 8 is currently being aired on Mondays on CBS in the US as well as E4 in the UK.

How I Met Your Mother Confirmed For 9th And Final Season, May Copy Seinfeld

Neil Patrick Harris Jason Segel Alyson Hannigan Cobie Smulders Josh Radnor

Finally, we might find out how Ted met his kids' mother. The CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother has been confirmed by its makers that it will return for a 9th season, but that its season will be the last.

We'll have to say goodbye to Barney (Neil Patrick Harris), Ted (Josh Radnor), Marshall (Jason Segal), Lily (Alyson Hannigan) and Robin (Cobie Smulders), but its legacy will live on in Suit Up Day, at the very least. From the writers of Friends, it has managed to retain a good audience and does particularly well with the sought after demographic of 18-49, according to the Los Angeles Times. Having premièred in 2005 it is now in its 9th season, and has followed Ted and his friends while he narrates the story of how he met his children's mother. Every relationship that he has seems to continually imply that that is their mother, but always fizzles out.

"Through eight years, 'How I Met Your Mother' has mastered the art of leading-edge comedy, emotional water-cooler moments and pop culture catch phrases," CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler said in a statement. "We are excited for Carter [Bays], Craig [Thomas] and [executive producer] Pam Fryman and this amazing cast and to tell the final chapter and reveal television's most mysterious mother to some of TV's most passionate fans."

Safe Haven Trailer

When Katie Feldman flees from her city and winds up in the picturesque town of Southport in North Carolina, she is initially welcomed by the close-knit community. As much as she tries to avoid it, being more fond of her own company than others, she forms bonds with her frank but friendly neighbour Jo and the quiet, widowed shop owner Alex. Alex is immediately taken to Katie and attempts to win the guarded newcomer over by fixing her a bike so she doesn't have to walk to work; however, she is reluctant to put her trust in anybody and does what she can to avoid falling in love with him. It isn't long before she finds herself giving in and following her heart, but then almost as soon as begins to believe she's safe again, her past follows her and she is faced with answering a lot of complicated questions about why she wound up in Southport.

'Safe Haven' is an adaptation from the novel of the same name by Nicholas Sparks ('The Notebook', 'Dear John'). It is directed by Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom ('The Cider House Rules', 'Chocolat'), written by Leslie Bohem ('A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child') and Dana Stevens ('City of Angels') and from the producers of 'Twilight' and it is scheduled for release in the UK on March 1st 2013.

Grassroots Review

Good

There's a terrific sense of righteous anger in this scruffy comedy about disenfranchised people shaking American politics to its core. But the film plays it far too safely, dealing lightly with important themes while refusing to take a real stand on anything. It also never makes the most of its likeable, fully invested cast.

Based on a true story, the film is set in 2001 Seattle, where long-time buddies Phil and Grant (Biggs and Moore) are both unemployed journalists. When Grant decides to run for city council, Phil helps with the campaign. Grant's main passion is public transportation, which he sees as a social justice issue since it's what allows lower-income people to work and improve their lives. And his counter-culture approach makes him stand out opposite the unruffled incumbent (Cedric). On the other hand, Phil's girlfriend Emily (Ambrose) starts to worry when Grant's campaign becomes a centre for frat-boy antics, including rather a lot of pot-smoking. But this populist approach is like a breath of fresh air to voters.

Watching these no-hopers take on a well-oiled political machine is pretty inspirational, especially when the characters have so much raw charm. Biggs is superb in the central role, grounding even the most chaotic scenes in earthy honesty. By contrast, Moore feels a little overwrought as the hyperactive Grant, which makes us wonder why anyone would take him seriously. Although he nicely brings out Grant's inner resolve. And both Ambrose and Cedric add complex layers to their rather thinly written characters.

The Avengers Review

Excellent
Like four action movies mashed into one, it's often difficult to know where to look while watching this busy blockbuster. It takes a while to get going, but once writer-director Whedon hits his stride, the film rockets through a series of frantically entertaining set pieces.

When mischievous Loki (Hiddleston) steals the tesseract from top-secret agency Shield, director Nick Fury (Jackson) and his sidekicks (Gregg and Smulders) call in their superheroes: Tony (Downey), Steve (Evans), Natasha (Johansson), Bruce (Ruffalo) and Clint (Renner), better known as Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, the Hulk and Hawkeye. And Loki's brother Thor (Hemsworth) also turns up. But calling them a team is misleading, as they find it tricky to put rivalries and mistrust aside to save the world from Loki's apocalyptic plan.
