Coldplay frontman Chris Martin has turned down a top civic honour in his hometown because he doesn't think he deserves it.

An internet campaign started in July (14) calling for the singer to receive the Freedom of Exeter, the town in Devon, England, where he grew up, and the drive gained momentum when it was backed by the area's member of parliament, Ben Bradshaw.

City council leaders contacted Martin when they were alerted to the campaign, but the star insisted he does not feel worthy of the prestigious award.

A council spokesperson tells Britain's The Western Daily Press newspaper, "He has said he would like to be considered for the award but not at the moment as he hasn't yet done enough for the city."
