Coldplay had fans smelling a prank when they announced plans to launch a new scent on April Fool's Day (01Apr10).
The group revealed it was releasing an "exclusive fragrance", called Angst by Coldplay.
In a post on the band's website, frontman Chris Martin quipped, "This is something we've wanted to do for a long time. People like to smell nice and we thought we could help them out."
The elaborate practical joke went on to suggest the group's producer Brian Eno had designed the bottles, and were available online, but when gullible fans tried to buy the fragrance from the 'Coldplay store' they were informed Angst had sold out.
