Based on the long-running Archie comic books, 'Riverdale' has become a huge hit both in the States and abroad, following the characters the series has made famous including Archie (KJ Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse) amongst others.

Currently focusing on a murder investigation, after Jason Blossom was found washed up with a bullet hole in his head, the show gives a darker and gloomier outlook on the town of Riverdale; one that much of the comic book readers wouldn't have been expecting. Despite that, much of the lore remains in place, and that includes the impending love triangle between Archie, Veronica and Betty.

All signs point to the love triangle being put on hold for at least the remainder of this season however, as Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and Kevin (Casey Cott) continue to work on discovering exactly who was responsible for the murder of Jason (Trevor Stines).

Noting that the love triangle "will always be at the heart of any Archie story", executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa says he's still looking for the "right way" to inject the storyline into the show.

Speaking to EW, he explained that the budding romance between Betty and Jughead has, for now at least, put any love triangle plans on hold.

"I would say that it's still a very new relationship," he said of the surprise coupling. "But given the circumstances of what they're doing, which is investigating a murder, and given that they're both from very different worlds - Betty's the perfect girl next door, the cheerleader, and Jughead's the outsider from the wrong side of the tracks, the misfit, the longer - their relationship is going to be tested sooner rather than later."

Teasing fans like this is always a good move on behalf of those who work on the show. Just who will be forcing the Betty-Jughead relationship into dangerous territory so shortly after it started? Could it be Betty's overbearing parents, or will there be other forces working against them? We'll find out as the show rolls into its final six episodes.
