Peter Capaldi has revealed that he would like David Bowie and Keith Richards to make guest appearances on ‘Doctor Who’ one day.

Capaldi, who currently plays the timelord, made the comments during a special test screening in front of a select audience in Cardiff. They were shown the first two episodes of the forthcoming ninth series, which starts on Saturday September 19th.

With a host of high-profile names making cameo appearances in the recent past, he was asked who he’d like to see getting involved with the series. “David Bowie, he would be a very good one," he told the audience. He added he would also like to see Rolling Stones guitarist Richards “stumbling around the Tardis, knocking out a few chords.”

Both are no strangers to the big screen. Richards has featured in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise alongside Johnny Depp (whose mannerisms as the swashbuckling Captain Jack Sparrow are similar to Richards’ own in any case), while Bowie has significantly greater film experience.

Bowie won many plaudits with his role as an alien who tries to fit in with civilisation in The Man Who Fell To Earth in 1976, making him pretty ideal for the part of Doctor Who himself if push ever came to shove. He also played the role of Jareth the Goblin King in 1986’s Labyrinth, and of course has been preoccupied with outer space in his music from time to time.

He hit Number 1 with ‘Space Oddity’ in 1975, and his 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars remains the most celebrated part of his career in the UK.

So, why does Capaldi want these two rock legends alongside him in ‘Doctor Who’? “The punk explosion started when I was about 18 so I love new wave music and rock’n’roll,” Capaldi said, revealing his musical loves.

Continuing the rock ‘n’ roll theme, the trailer for series nine includes a glimpse of the Doctor playing an electric guitar. Capaldi confessed to the audience that he was thrilled to discover this scene in the scripts when he received them.

“I think I'd sort of half mentioned it in joking, but I was really delighted that these guys went for it as an idea,” he said. “It was a great day when I went to pick the Doctor's guitar. We went to Denmark Street and went into various vintage guitar shops, looking for Doctor Who's guitar. I first thought it should be like a Stratocaster or a Telecaster, one of those old classic guitars, but they all started to look like I was having a mid-life crisis.”
