Red Hot Chili Peppers were forced to pull out of their headlining slot at KROQ's annual Weenie Roast on May 14, just hours before they were due to take the stage, after frontman Anthony Kiedis was sent to an area hospital.

According to Billboard, a rep for KROQ, a Los Angeles radio station, said the singer was taken from the venue in an ambulance after suffering from extreme stomach pain. However the exact nature of the problem is unknown at this time.

The band were due to take the stage at 10pm, but at 10.30pm KROQ tweeted, ‘Unfortunately due to illness the @ChiliPeppers were forced to cancel their set tonight at #WeenieRoast. More details to come.’

Bassist Flea apologised to the crowd at the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, saying the band were ‘devastated’ that they had to cancel. “We are devastated about it,” Flea said. “We live to rock, we live to f---ing kick deep into the depths of our hearts and rock, but unfortunately there’s a medical thing that happened and we need to deal with it.”

On twitter drummer Chad Smith added: “NO one's more disappointed than us that we couldn't perform tonight. Sending love and a speedy recovery to my brother Anthony.” The show ended up being closed by Weezer and the evening also featured a surprise set from Blink 182.
