Rapper Snoop Dogg has announced he’s developing a new drama series for HBO, alongside director Allen Hughes and writer Rodney Barnes. The 43 year old made the announcement as he delivered the keynote address at this year’s South by Southwest festival on Friday morning.
Snoop Dogg is developing a drama series for HBO
According to Deadline, Snoop said the drama would be set in in early 1980s Los Angeles and centers on ‘a family whose seemingly idyllic life is turned upside down by the collision of their community and American politics.’
The rapper is himself a native of Long Beech, California which is just south of Los Angeles. While Snoop has dabbled in acting in the past, most recently having made a guest appearance on Fox’s ‘Empire’, he’ll be going behind the camera on the HBO series, executive producing alongside his longtime manager, Ted Chung of Stampede Management, as well as Hughes and Barnes.

“HBO is the number one network in the world as far as developing and having these types of shows come to life,” Snoop told the audience at SXSW. “This is a dream come true to be able to tell a story that’s going to be told the right way on the right network.”

Elsewhere in the rapper’s keynote speech Snoop also talked about his friendship with country legend Willie Nelson and a trip they once took to Amsterdam together. "We was chilling in Willie's room, and we was playing dominos – and he was whooping my ass in dominos! But at the same time, he passes me a paper, a cigar, a vapor, a bong and – what is that thing with the plastic bag? I don't even know the name of it – a volcano,” Snoop dished.
The rapper then said he suggested the pair get something to eat, so they went to a nearby KFC restaurant. "Me and Willie are sitting side-by-side.... When we opened it up, me and Willie, we stick our hand in at the same time, and we grab the same piece of chicken. And I look at Willie and I'm like, 'That's you,'" Snoop said, calling the incident one of the greatest moments of his life.
