Craig T. Nelson will reprise his role as Coach Hayden Fox in a sequel series for NBC, which has been given a 13-episode straight to series order. The show will pick up 18 years after the original comedy went off the air.

The original series spanned nine seasons on ABC, running for 198 episodes and followed the trials and tribulations of Fox, the head coach of the fictional college football team, the Minnesota State University Screaming Eagles. Nelson was nominated for a Golden Globe for his starring role and won the Emmy for best comedy actor in 1992.

NBC's revival will be set in the present day with Fox now retired from coaching. However, he is called back home to become the assistant coach to his grown on, who is coaching at an Ivy League school in Pennsylvania

As yet there has been no additional casting announcements, though we know the creator of Coach, Barry Kemp, will write the series and serve as an executive producer, along with Nelson.

The Coach sequel has no defined premiere date.

Nelson has enjoyed a strong career in TV and film since Coach, playing the Warden in My Name is Earl and voicing Mr Incredible in the critically acclaimed 2004 film The Incredibles. Recently, he's been starring in the TV series Parenthood as Zeek Braverman, the family patriarch. Loosely based on the movie of the same name, the NBC show tells the story of an older couple, their four children and their families. Notably, one of the grandchildren has Asperger syndrome.
