Crooked Fingers Forfeit / Fortune Album

Eric Bachmann is a man of many talents, he can play a small nylon stringed guitar with as much precision as any professional classical guitar player but stick an electric guitar in the same hands and he can rock! Since his beginnings in Archers of Loaf Bachmann has delivered some very interesting noise pop.

Crooked Fingers is his rock incarnation and it was formed in 2000, over the years he's wondered off into different musical veins and this time Bachmann's trying to keep the melody core to his songs.

At times Crooked Fingers recalls Bruce Springsteen, Talking Heads and Tom Waits, all very healthy company to keep. Songs like 'Let's Not Pretend (To Be New Men)' is simply gorgeous, with it's elegant gypsy style violin it really completes the song. 'Phony Revolutions' is when Bachmann impresses the listener the most. It wouldn't be so far off the mark to imagine Beirut writing an album like this when they've matured. The only downfall of the album is 'What Never Comes' it's very much music by numbers and if that track wasn't on the album Bachmann would be much more acclaimed than he currently is.

Rating 8/10
