Queen Of The Desert Trailer

Gertrude Bell was a formidably intelligent British woman from the late 19th century whose travels through expansive deserts in the Middle East helped establish modern society in countries such as Iraq and Jordan, and importantly cast an enormous amount of respect on women everywhere. She didn't care for behaving like British society expected women to behave, and she proved that she could be just as skilled in the likes of cartography, archeology and politics and refused to be treated any differently than her male peers. Even when she was threatened and accused of being a spy, she never backed down and her resilience and care towards Arabic peoples have left their mark in history.

Our Kind Of Traitor Review

Excellent

John le Carre's novel is adapted with plenty of inventive style into a remarkably personal thriller, packed with thrills that find suspense in the characters and their predicament rather than pushy movie cliches. It's so sleek and involving that it's easy to ignore the nagging plot holes. We're too busy imagining what we might do in the same situations.

It opens in Marrakech, where poetry professor Perry (Ewan McGregor) and his lawyer wife Gail (Naomie Harris) have gone in an attempt to save their troubled marriage. One evening in a bar, Perry meets the boisterous Dima (Stellan Skarsgard), a Russian who openly admits that he launders money for the mafia. And he asks for Perry's help in delivering information to British intelligence in exchange for his family's safety. Back in London, Perry meets MI6 agent Hector (Damian Lewis), who sees this data as vital to bring down corrupt British politicians. But he has to go rogue to continue on the case, drafting Perry and Gail in to help. Soon they're travelling to France and Switzerland in a dangerous game that puts them in the crosshairs of both a Russian mafia boss (Grigoriy Dobrigyn) and a shifty British MP (Jeremy Northam).

The key point here is that Perry and Gail get involved because they are trying to help Dima's family. This makes everything that happens unusually down-to-earth, with a plot that hinges on the safety of a wife and children rather than the fate of the world. Actually, it's the state of the world that's the villain here, as corrupt Western politicians accept huge money to sidestep the rule of law. Screenwriter Hossein Amini is terrific at keeping the film's focus on the people rather than the plot machinery. And director Susanna White fills the screen with classy touches that are gorgeously shot and edited. The action sequences are unusually clever, avoiding cliches for something more deeply involving (a big shootout is particularly imaginative).

Damian Lewis Slams Boris Johnson For Letting London Become Dominated By "Ultra-Rich"

Damian Lewis

Damian Lewis has blasted the outgoing Mayor of London Boris Johnson for letting the English capital become ruined by investors and reneging on an old election promise not to let the city become “Dubai-on-Thames”.

The ‘Homeland’ actor, 45, described himself as a “proud Londoner” and said that it would be disappointing if London were to become effectively ruled by the ultra-rich, as it is in his new movie Our Kind of Traitor. Speaking at its red carpet premiere on Thursday (May 5th), he told reporters that the vision set out in the movie was sadly prescient.

Our Kind Of Traitor Trailer

Professor (Perry) Makepiece and his partner Gail are enjoying an evening on in the bar whilst on holiday in Marrakech. A lavish gentleman also in the bar catches Perry's eye and the man eventually walks over and asks the couple to join them for a drink. Accepting the offer, the two are taken in by the man and his excessive spending. The man, Dima, has a foreign accent and extends an invitation to the couple for them to join Dima and his friends for a party at his villa.

Accepting the offer, Perry and Gail arrive at Dima's house to find it's not the small gathering they were expecting. Taken in by Dima's friendly persona, Perry and Dima talk and Dima eventually reveals his motives to Perry for inviting the Brit over. Dima wants Perry to take a USB to MI6 with a message - Dima explains that he's actually a money launderer for the Russian mob and wishes for asylum for him and his family in exchange for information on the highest ranking members of the Russian mob and their international affiliates.

Perry must weigh up all the risks involved and decide just how much he's willing to risk in order to help Dima.

Homeland Season 3, Episode 4 Recap: The Penny Drops

Claire Danes Mandy Patinkin Damian Lewis

The fourth episode of hit CIA drama, Homeland, aired last night in the UK and showed many fans that the series still had the intelligence and ability to surprise us. The season so far has been criticised for being boring, annoying and displaying none of the plotline flair that brought the show to Emmy-winning prominence but Game On let the real Homeland wink from behind a mask.

We last saw Homeland's Brody fleeing to Canada with the help of agent Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) after the attack on the CIA's headquarters in Virginia. All the evidence points towards him -the bomb parts in his car, the Al Queda suicide video - but is there more to this than meets the eye?

Homeland Season 3 Episode Leaked And Goes Viral

Damian Lewis Claire Danes

The first episode of the US hit series Homeland has been leaked online nearly a month before its planned release date. More than 100,000 fans have pirated the episode within the first few hours of it being uploaded according to TorrentFreak.

The premiere of the new series was expected to be released on 28th September, but the leak could cause a huge number of pirated downloads as the first episode was accessed four weeks in advance. The copy is referred to as 'workprint', which isn't the final product, meaning key elements are not included in the leak such as visual effects as well as the opening credits are missing.

A major concern with a 'workprint' leak is that it must have stemmed from a member of the post production team due to the confidentiality of upcoming series being very secure. An anti-piracy unit of 20th Century Fox who produce 'Homeland' are dealing with the situation.

The Emmy Awards 2013: Who's Deserving In The Outstanding Drama, Lead Actress & Actor Category?

This year 'smart' dramas Homeland, Mad Men and Breaking Bad dominate the Primetime Emmy Award nominations yet again and even for fans of the TV shows, it will be hard to predict which of their favourite series will carry off the most gongs. The Hollywood Reporter's Stacey Wilson highlights just how highly contested this year's 'best drama' category is: "If you win this year, it's going to be a real feather," she said to ABC News. The nominees list for each category is decidedly hefty but we've identified the ones that are toughest to call.

Bryan Cranston

Having never won an 'outstanding drama' Emmy before, it looks like Breaking Bad could finally scoop the big gong this year having picked up five Primetime Emmy's before; 3 'best actors' for Bryan Cranston, 2 'best supporting actors' for Aaron Paul. With the first half of its final season currently airing, it looks like this could be the last chance for the show, as popular as ever, to scoop the night's biggest award. Downton Abbey, whilst having previously looked strong, has endured harsh reviews in its third season meaning it will be interesting to see whether this has had any impact on the voters.

What We Learnt At The Golden Globes: Damian Lewis Was Very, Very, Drunk

Damian Lewis Claire Danes

After winning the coveted Golden Globe for Best Actor in a TV Drama, British star Damian Lewis well and truly let his hair down. The 41-year-old reportedly gave a step-perfect rendition of the Gangnam Style dance with his on-screen son, the actor Jackson Pace, before getting very, very drunk.

The Homeland stars wowed onlookers with the impromptu performance (though we reckon they had the whole thing planned). Unsurprisingly, the world's media were keen to chat with Lewis, given his big win at the Globes. He beat the likes of Bryan Cranston, Jeff Daniels, Jon Hamm and Steve Buscemi in the night's closest-to-call category by far and made sure he got through plenty of the free champagne on offer. Lewis apparently had to turn down an interview with E! reporter Marc Malkin because of the sheer amount of alcohol he'd consumed! Marc Malkin tweeted: "Damien Lewis no interviews because "I'm too drunk to talk!" Love honesty!" (sic)"

It was an all-round great night for Homeland, which scooped Best TV Drama as well as Best Actress for Claire Danes. The series - based on an Israeli series called Hatufim - wrapped up its second season in December. It follows a psychologically troubled CIA agent who believes that a U.S. Marine - played by Lewis - has been turned by Al Qaeda after eight years in captivity.

Enigmatic Maggie Smith Stays Away From The Golden Globes (Still Wins)

Maggie Smith Damian Lewis Claire Danes Lena Dunham

British screen icon Dame Maggie Smith did not attend the Golden Globes in Beverly Hills on Sunday (January 13, 2013) though fended off stiff competition to win Best Supporting Actress in a TV drama. Dame Maggie built on her 2012 Emmy Awards win by taking the prize for her critically acclaimed portrayal of Violet, the Dowager Countless in ITV's much-loved Downton Abbey. She was also nominated for Best Actress in the film category for the well-received Quartet.

Smith did not attend the Emmy Awards last year and is rarely spotted at awards' ceremonies despite her prestigious career. However, she did collect the Stratford Shakespeare Festival's Legacy Award from actor Christopher Plummer at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel back in September. At the Globes, Smith lost out to Jennifer Lawrence in the Best Actress (Comedy or Musical) category, though beat the likes of Hayden Panettiere and Sofia Vergara to the Best Supporting Actress gong for Downton Abbey.

It was a rather successful night for British stars, with Damian Lewis taking the Best Actor in a Television Drama award for Homeland. He beat Breaking Bad's Bryan Cranston, Boardwalk Empire's Steve Buscemi, The Newsroom's Jeff Daniels and Mad Men's Jon Hamm in one of the evening's toughest-to-call categories. "I'd like to dedicate this to my mum, looking down on me bursting with pride telling everyone around her how well her son is doing in acting," Lewis said in his acceptance speech. It was a strong night for Homeland, which took Best Drama Series and saw its lead star Claire Danes win Best Actress.

Idris Elba, Damian Lewis's Odds Slashed To Become Next James Bond

Idris Elba Daniel Craig Sam Worthington Damian Lewis

The bookmakers have responded to Naomie Harris' claims that close friend Idris Elba has already met with Barbara Broccoli regarding becoming the next James Bond, after Daniel Craig - who currently stars in Skyfall - brings his tenure to a close.

Speaking at the London premiere of the new 007 movie, Bond girl Harris told the Huffington Post, "I didn't realise that there was this talk and then I did a film with Idris and he said that he met Barbara Broccoli and that it does seem like there is a possibility in the future that there could very well be a black James Bond." Elba's superb turn as Stringer Bell on HBO's 'The Wire' as well as his role as the maverick cop Luther has garnered Elba plenty of attention of both sides of the Atlantic. The London-born actor has plenty of things going for him, most notably that he's very, very cool. He briefly commented on the speculation last year, telling NPR, "It's a rumor. I just don't want to be the black James Bond. Sean Connery wasn't the Scottish James Bond, and Daniel Craig wasn't the blue-eyed James Bond." It's a fair point; though we're guessing Elba would be more than qualified to land the role on merit, too. Bookmaker William Hill has cautiously slashed his odds of becoming the next Bond to 9/2 (he was hardly in the Top 20 contenders this time last week), though now make Damian Lewis the outright favourite at 3/1. Though it's not clear why the Homeland actor is the frontrunner, he's another intriguing possibility.

Though Elba would be our pick, we'd suggest sticking all the money you have on Sam Worthington

David Nevins On Homeland And Season 3

Claire Danes Damian Lewis

Homeland, starring Clare Danes and Damian Lewis, won six Emmys and enjoyed an increase in viewers because of it, now the show has been awarded a third season after Showtime ordered its renewal. Network chief David Nevins has been talking to The Hollywood Reporter.

"There wasn't a lot of suspense in the decision," explained Nevins on the news of a third season. "The evidence seems to be that more and more people are coming to the show." The Oct. 21 record high of 1.75 million, a 25 percent boost in cumulative viewership and 1.1 million new subscribers this year could be the statistics he was alluding to. I think they've shown a willingness to make big story moves from the very beginning," he said of Sunday's episode. "They've avoided the long tease that I think the audience has sort of come to expect. It's very hard to figure out Homeland's rhythm, and that makes it exciting to watch."

The news that many of the writers will remain the same will come as a relief to some of the show’s most ardent fans. "I think the core of the writing staff will return," he said. "Change is inevitable in television, so you can't fear it, and it would probably get boring if we kept it the same group year after year."

Showtime Want Third Season Of 'Homeland'

Claire Danes Damian Lewis

Homeland season 2 has done so well, Showtime has ordered a third series of the terrorism drama, USA Today reports. It's no surprise, given the success of the show at The Emmys.

Homeland, which firmly stakes its place within the drama category, has been a great success, which manifested itself with the best drama award at The Emmys, alongside acting awards for the show's biggest stars, Claire Danes and Damian Lewis. The Second season began Sept. 30 and was up 60% from its series debut. Across all platforms "Homeland" drew 5.2 million viewers for the episode. Sunday's 10 p.m. episode - the fourth of the season - drew 1.7 million viewers, the highest in series history for an initial telecast. "The writers, cast and crew of Homeland continue to create a remarkably entertaining and suspenseful roller coaster ride," said David Nevins, president of entertainment for Showtime. "We can't wait for our viewers to experience what unfolds through the rest of season two." We can't, either.

It seems to be TV renewal week, with Fox ordering a third season of the singing competition, The X-Factor, and Arrow - the superhero series - being picked up for a full season after only two episodes on CW. The network also ordered three more scripts from Beauty and the Beast and Emily Owens, M.D., their two other freshman series.

Homeland's Faut Pas: Episode Set In Beirut Offends Lebanon And Syria

Claire Danes Damian Lewis

Homeland: a Showtime drama series that focuses itself on contemporary East-West tensions, has come under attack from Lebanon and Syria, as both countries are offended by the show's unflattering portrayal of Beirut.

The series revolves around two main characters, Carrie Mathison (Clare Danes) who works for CIA's counterterrorism devision, and Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) a marine who had been held captive by Al-Quaeda for 8 years. The second episode of the second season of the award winning show is set in Beirut, which shows a variety of terrorist activity in the Lebanese city.

Outraged and saddened by his city's portrayal, Lebanese Tourism Minister Fadi Abboud has sought legal action in response to the show. The Daily Mail reports "Abboud said the episode wrongly depicted the city as a strong-hold for terrorists and a place where foreigners can easily fall victim to random attacks". In many ways however, today's car-bomb attack in the city unfortunately seems to confirm Homeland's depiction of the city.

Damian Lewis Reflects On 'Homeland's' Success As Second Season Gets Underway

Damian Lewis

As the second season of Homeland gets under way, one of its leading lights has been reflecting to the Metro about its success and why people will be coming back to it. Damian Lewis - who plays the character Nicholas Brody - was talking about what was in store for his character this season, and said "Brody is brought back and has to deal with the very real issues of returning to his family, integrating with them and learning how to be intimate with his wife again." He added "I think that grounds the show, and I think it is what people have responded to." Continuing, he said: "We are surrounded by families with young boys coming back from war - or not."

Homeland Series 2 Aims To Build On Emmy Success

Claire Danes Damian Lewis

The second series of Homeland hits our screens on Sunday (September 30th) and the stars of the show, fresh from their success at this year’s Emmy Awards, have promised that it will carry on delivering pulse-quickening drama.

The show walked away from this years Emmy Awards with its head held high, clutching the awards for Best Actress for Claire Danes, Best Actor for Damian Lewis, Best Writing in a Drama Series for the show’s creators and chief writers Howard Gordon, Alex Gansa and Gideon Raff as well as the night's biggest win for Best Drama Series, and now it looks to take this success and run with it. After his win, Damian told Huffington Post that although this series will maintain it’s character driven story devices, the new series will be much more high paced, and promised, “it will surprise people how accelerated it is.”

Hoping to keep the plot of the next season as much of a secret as possible, the writers and producers have revealed very little about what we can expect from series two of the show, although we do know a little about what will happen from how series one ended. With Brody (Lewis) now a congressman and Jess (Morena Baccarin), his devoted, supportive wife still by his side, Carrie (Danes) faces a race against time as she tries to re-associate herself with the CIA whilst recovering from her electroconvulsive therapy treatments. The new series will also have a new regular in it’s ranks in the shape of Abu Nazir ( Navid Negahban) who still poses a massive threat to the US.

Brits Abroad: Damian Lewis And Maggie Smith Win Big At Emmy Awards 2012

Damian Lewis Maggie Smith Julian Fellowes Martin Freeman Benedict Cumberbatch Jon Cryer Jim Parsons Charlie Sheen

British actor Damian Lewis and screen veteran Maggie Smith were among the winners at the Emmy Awards 2012 in Los Angeles on Sunday evening (September 23, 2012). Lewis – who plays an American soldier in ‘Homeland’ – picked up the award for Best Actor in a Drama, while Downton Abbey’s Smith won Best Supporting Actress.

On receiving his award, Lewis joked with the star-studded audience, “I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologise,” adding, “I don't really believe in judging art, but I thought I'd show up just in case.” Lewis’ show ‘Homeland’ upset the odds by taking the evening’s biggest prize, for Best Drama, ahead of big favorite Breaking Bad and four-time winner Mad Men. Maggie Smith’s award was the solitary highlight in a terrible night for Julian Fellowes’ Downton Abbey, which had been nominated for a whopping sixteen prizes. Instead, it was national security drama Homeland, HBO’s Game Change and the much-loved US comedy Modern Family who won the most awards, with three each. Armed with Sherlock stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the BBC would have felt quietly confident for the Lead Actor and Supporting Actor gongs, but both actors missed out.

Another big surprise at this year’s Emmys was Jon Cryer’s award for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in ‘Two and a Half Men’. The Big Bang Theory’s Jim Parsons was the hot favorite for the award, though it was Cryer who walked away with the prize. Who needs Charlie Sheen?

So, What Exactly Happened At The Primetime Emmys?

Bryan Cranston Jim Parsons Damian Lewis Jon Cryer Lena Dunham

The Emmy Awards 2012 has been and gone. The tuxedos dry cleaned and the dresses sold in ex-worn outlet stores, never to be donned by a star again for fear of the unwanted headlines. But hang on a minute; why aren’t the AMC Execs still shaking off a hangover? Why isn’t Bryan Cranston polishing his Emmy? Why in the great gods of television isn’t Jim Parsons heading to his Big Bang Theory rehearsals without an extra skip in his step?

It’s because none of them won! That’s why! And what a scandal that is. But what exactly happened? Well the Bryan Cranston one we can see; he’s won it before for the same character (Walter White), and Damien Lewis was quite something in Showtime’s terrorist drama Homeland, but did the show deserve the most prestigious award of Best Drama? Breaking Bad’s 4th season was truly something to behold. It had everything, and it’s not like the competition stopped there, with Mad Men vying for an unprecedented 5th award. But Homeland was the first season of a truly ground-breaking show: a drama that addressed a growing elephant in the rooms of many western citizens. Terrorism. Add to that the stellar performances – with Claire Danes picking up Best Actress as well - and we can just about understand the way the voters went.

Now, for the comedy awards, we’re not so sure. Modern Family was always going to win the big prize, and given that the ABC comedy had nearly a billion nominations* going into the ceremony, other wins were inevitable. However, Jim Parson’s portrayal of Sheldon Cooper has – alongside some incredibly snappy writing – carried The Big Bang Theory to beyond 100 episodes. With Charlie Sheen leaving, and Jon Cryer adopting a bigger role, he bagged the prize, but even he was surprised and shocked as he gave a press conference; big fat Emmy in his right hand. Oh, and Lena Dunham should have won too. Her performance in Girls sets new benchmarks for women comedy actors being allowed to ‘be’ different things. Now time to start predicting the 2013 awards…

"Mandy Patinkin, Holla" Goes Viral After Claire Danes' Bizarre Emmy Acceptance Speech

Mandy Patinkin Claire Danes Damian Lewis

Mandy Patinkin was the toast of the town last night (September 23rd) when he, alongside the rest of the Homeland cast won big at the Emmy Awards 2012. The Showtime program won four of the five categories it was nominated in, including Outstanding Drama Series. Patinkin didn't win any individual honours, but it was ensured that he more than any of the others was talked about on the internet last night after his co-star Clare Danes opted to give him his own unique shout out among the list of people she thanked upon winning the Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama category.

The Associated Press reports that as Danes went through the names, she stopped specifically at Patinkin and called out "Mandy Patinkin, holla". Twitter erupted with delight at the unorthodox way of thanking her co-star, with several sights demanding that the saying became a new internet meme. Oh goody. Gawker wrote: "'Mandy Patinkin, holla' is the new Angelina Jolie's leg," whilst New York Magazine's Vulture account said: "'Mandy Patinkin, holla' is the best thank-you ever." NPR's twitter meanwhile said: "If the Internet doesn't remix 'Mandy Patinkin, holla' by tomorrow morning, it is a failure."

The other two awards that Homeland took home were for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series, which went to Damian Lewis with the writing team taking the Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series.

Famous for his pranks; the Jimmy Kimmel lie detector a favourite amongst fans, he was always going to inject a playfulness to The 64th Annual Primetime Emmys, but was his performance as strong as those who took home the big prizes?

Sadly: no. Kimmel is one of the most accomplished presenters in Hollywood today, but last night’s performance at The Emmys didn’t quite shine like Jimmy Kimmel Live. He did his best though, and produced a solid, if unremarkable show. Of course, any Kimmel-presented broadcast wouldn’t be complete without one of his trademark pranks, and last night was no different. Midway through the show, he instructed people to go on Twitter and Facebook and post "OMG, Tracy Morgan just passed out at the Emmys. Turn on ABC right now!" Morgan played along, some people were fooled, everyone moved on. Sure it was a bit of fun; a bit of social media interaction with the fans, but it won’t live on in the memory of The Emmys greatest moments. It’s certainly no Ricky Gervais Golden Globes moment.

All in all, it was a tepid performance from Kimmel, which came as somewhat of a surprise, but perhaps the biggest surprise was Homeland’s triumph in the best drama category, beating out AMC’s powerhouse double Breaking Bad and Mad Men for the prize. Star Claire Danes won best lead drama actress, while Damian Lewis won best lead actor in a drama on a great night for Showtime.

Emmy Awards: Homeland And Modern Family Take Home The Big Prizes

The 64th Primetime Emmy Awards kicked off last night, and there were some surprises and with Homeland winning best drama. Modern Family also picked up best comedy, but everyone knew that would happen

Some expected Breaking Bad to sweep up, and others predicted that Mad Men would take the crown for an incredible fifth time. As it turned out, the terrorist drama/thriller Homeland took home the top prize. And the show's stars didn't miss out either, with Claire Danes and Damian Lewis both winning the best actress and best actor awards for their performances in the show. It was a great night for Showtime, as everyone (including us) expected the explosive end to season 4 of Breaking Bad to be a shoe-in for the big awards. Aaron Paul, who depicts Jesse Pinkman in AMC's meth drama did win best supporting actor, though.

In a more predictable turn, Modern Family scooped up the best comedy award. The ABC laugh-a-minute comedy, which hits screens again with a new series starting September 26th, picked up a further three prizes, with both supporting actor prizes and the writing award to make it four for the night. Whilst Jim Parsons was widely expected to win the best actor in a comedy award, his performances as Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory being so popular, it wasn't to be, and Jon Cryer of Two And A Half Men was named winner. "Something has clearly gone terribly wrong," Cryer joked.

The Sweeney Review

Good
The iconic 1970s British TV series gets the big screen treatment from crime-drama aficionado Nick Love (The Business). And this slick cop thriller is enjoyable even if the plot never amounts to much more than an extended episode of a television show. But it looks great, and the cast is thoroughly entertaining.

Jack (Winstone) is a grizzled veteran of the Flying Squad, known in rhyming slang as "the Sweeney", an elite team of undercover London cops who deal with armed crime. His right-hand man and protege is George (Drew), and as they investigate a suspiciously messy jewellery heist, they are distracted when internal affairs officer Lewis (Mackintosh) starts looking for a reason to shut them down. Their captain (Lewis) tries to help, but things are complicated by the fact that Jack is having an affair with Lewis' wife (Atwell).

The Sweeney Trailer

Cockney geezers of the world rejoice as the big screen remake of the seventies police drama The Sweeney is in post-production and will be released in cinemas in mid-September. Ray Winstone stars as Detective Jack Regan whilst Ben Drew, alias rapper Plan B, stars as Detective Sergeant George Carter, the part initially made famous by Dennis Waterman. Despite being parodied numerous times for his tendency to write/perform the theme tunes of may of his shows, Waterman actually didn't write the theme tune to the Sweeney, however no word has been made on whether Shaw (or Waterman) will be making a special appearance on the film's soundtrack.
