Work has reportedly begun on a musical based on James Bond which will written by Merry Saltzman, the daughter of legendary 007 film producer Harry Saltzman. Saltzman has confirmed she’s secured the rights to write the musical based on the Bond character, which is due to hit the stage in late 2017 or early 2018.

According to Playbill.com the show has been concisely titled James Bond: The Musical and will have a book by Keeping Hannah Waiting novelist Dave Clarke and music and lyrics by country composer Jay Henry Weisz.

The musical will have an original storyline and will use several famous Bond villains as well as introducing some new ones. A new Bond girl will also be created for the show. At present production schedules and trial runs are still being worked out, Saltzman told Playbill, but an anticipated opening time of late 2017-early 2018 is being worked towards.

The character of James Bond was created by British author Ian Fleming in 1953 and has gone on to appear in 14 novel and 24 big screen adventures. The first Bond movie. Doctor No. hit cinemas in 1962 and the most recent, Spectre, starring Daniel Craig is scheduled for release this November.

Craig is one of seven actors to have taken on the iconic 007 role, but the 47 year old actor is said to be stepping down from the franchise after Spectre’s release. While no word has been given on who could be Craig’s successor, at the bookies ‘The Wire’ star Idris Elba and ‘Homeland’s’ Damian Lewis are currently the hot favourites.
