Dave Grohl has revealed that there will be a second season of ‘Sonic Highways’. The Foo Fighters frontman confirmed in a video interview with the NME that the band will be returning for another series of the well-received HBO documentaries.

A picture taken by guitarist Chris Shiflett on Instagram, of an aeroplane embossed with the word 'Sonic Highways' and the band's logo, had caused fans to speculate about another series - and so it has come to pass. However, 46 year old Grohl remained evasive on the setting for the new series. “It might or might not be international. It might someday be international. It might only be England, or be England and other places, or maybe it’s places in America and people from other countries that are inspired by these places in America.”

The original series debuted late last year, documenting the Foos as they recorded their eighth studio album (also called Sonic Highways) in different studios in eight cities across America, as the group sought to explore the musical heritage of each city and infuse those influences into the songs. It was later broadcast in Britain on BBC Four.

However, he did tease the possibility that the Foos would choose Britain as the location. “I mean of all places in the world, England and the UK just seems like it would be like shooting fish in a barrel, ya know? There’s just so f****** much here.”

Grohl also indicated that there was no timeline as to when the recording would take place. Indeed, they’ve yet to finish touring in support of the first Sonic Highways album, which was released in November 2014.

At the end of last year, Grohl had implied that the series had been a one-off, saying that it had “exhausted” the band, and was unlikely to be repeated. Again speaking to the NME, he had said: “The great thing about being in this band is that we don’t have to do anything. Nobody ever tells us what to do or when to do it. So we kind of just figure it out. I think it’s one of the reasons we’ve been active for so long, nobody’s ever been able to tell us to stop.”

Given its huge popularity, it was perhaps inevitable that there would be a repeat. Whether it will yield another studio album, however, is a different question.
