More than 600 industry personnel will vote to select next year's inductees, who will be announced in December. Also nominated are prog rockers Yes, disco pop band Chic, glam rock band Kiss, classic rockers Deep Purple, rap artists N.W.A and LL Cool J, and folk legend Cat Stevens, AKA Yusuf Islam.

On the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's online blurb for Nirvana, it reads "It only takes one song to start a rock revolution [...] Nirvana remain an enduring influence and challenge - proof that the right band with the right noise can change the world." Indeed, the band who released their debut Bleach in 1989 are one of the better known acts on the list of nominees and had a highly influential effect upon rock music in the succeeding years.

Kurt Cobain May Be Deceased, But Nirvana's Music Is Still Relevant The World Over.

The news of Nirvana's nomination comes not long after the re-release and 20th celebration of their pivotal 1993 album, In Utero. A live DVD and a new track, 'Unheard Tune,' was released and a Seattle tattoo parlour began offering free smiley face tattoos with every new In Utero purchased.

However, if the band do make the cut, their honour will coincide with the 20th anniversary of Kurt Cobain's death which will strike a bittersweet chord with many fans who are still mourning the iconic frontman.
