David Bowie’s music will feature on the third series of BBC crime drama ‘Peaky Blinders’, which is set to air next month. The late musician was a big fan of the show, which stars Cillian Murphy, and had asked for his music to be featured before his death in January.

Speaking to the Radio Times, show creator Steven Knight said that the musician had sent a picture of himself wearing a cap with razor blades to Cillian Murphy last year, as a homage to the series, .

“I got in touch with his people who came back straightaway and said he was a big, big fan.” Then in late December, a rep from Bowie’s label Sony BMG came to Knight’s house to play him the singer’s new album Blackstar.

“And then on the following Tuesday we heard that he’d passed away,” Knight continued. “It seems that his people were keen to establish that we could use it before he passed on.” The show is known for using modern music, despite being set in 1920s Birmingham.

Murphy, who plays Tommy Shelby in the series, was happy to see Bowie now among the list of artists whose music has featured on the show. “From the beginning we had The White Stripes and Nick Cave and since the show has gained in popularity more bands have started wanting to lend their music,” he said.

'Peaky Blinders' returns to BBC2 on Thursday 5 May at 9pm, it’s not yet known when the episode featuring Bowie’s music will air. A spokesperson for the BBC commented: “With the edit team still working away on the episodes a final track list or artist list is yet to be confirmed for the series three soundtrack.”
