Jennifer Lawrence Talks Working With Her 'Theatrical Father' Robert De Niro In 'Joy'

Jennifer Lawrence Robert De Niro Bradley Cooper David O Russell

After starring together in Silver Linings Playbook, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro have reunited for Joy, the true story of inventor Joy Mangano. This time De Niro is playing Lawrence’s father and thanks to their close bond, the actress couldn’t think of anyone more suited to play her on-screen dad.

“Bob is so paternal and lovely to me,” Lawrence said. “He's just always been so nice to me, so it felt really natural that he would play my father, because in some ways he was this paternal figure that I had, raising me through this certain element of my life, through movies and fame.”

Jennifer Lawrence Talks The Inspiring True Story Of Joy Mangano

Jennifer Lawrence Bradley Cooper David O Russell

Jennifer Lawrence has teamed with director David O. Russell again this time for biopic, Joy, the amazing true story of 'miracle mop' inventor Joy Mangano. The film follows Mangano as she overcomes the odds (and her family) to fulfil her dreams, after finding the confidence to finally believe in herself.

“This particular woman has her own dreams and has her own aspirations that she's put on hold for her entire life and I think that’s a huge reason why the story spanned for so long, for four generations,” Lawrence said of her character.

Jennifer Lawrence Calls Joy Director A 'Mad-Scientist Genius'

Jennifer Lawrence David O Russell

"It's fascinating and terrifying working for him because he's a mad-scientist genius," she explains. "He's inspired by anything." Lawrence isn't remotely bothered by Russell's reputation. "I always see the wide eyes of people who've never worked with him before," she laughs. "I tell them, 'You have to let go of all your s--t.' Working on his sets is like the Olympics of acting. Everything moves so fast. It's like watching someone do a giant abstract painting or sculpture and you go, 'Where is this going?' And then all of a sudden you're like, 'Oh, it's a pegasus. It's beautiful!'"

Robert De Niro co-stars in JoyRobert De Niro co-stars in Joy

She was on the set of The Hunger Games when she had a 4am phone call from Russell asking if she wanted to play the woman who invented the Miracle Mop. "From that seed he went off into David land," she says, "and it developed and changed, and now it's a completely different story. Usually it's about the fight on the way to success and the happy ending. David goes on to tell the struggle that comes after that, along with all the sacrifices that come with finally getting what you want."

Joy Review

Extraordinary

After Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, mercurial filmmaker David O. Russell reunites with Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro for an offbeat biopic about the woman who invented the Miracle Mop. It's such a quirky movie that it's destined to divide audiences, but there's magic in Russell's loose, inventive filmmaking style. And this lively story has a lot to say about the tenacity required to achieve the American dream.

Joy Mangano (Lawrence) is the only sensible person in her family, so she's been running the household most of her life. But now things are getting a bit too complicated, as her father Rudy (De Niro) moves back into the house after his second marriage fails, Joy's mother Terry (Virginia Madsen) does little but watch her favourite soap opera, Joy's ex-husband Tony (Edgar Ramirez) lives in the basement pursuing his dream of becoming a pop star, and her sister (Dascha Polanco) undermines everything she does. As Joy cares for her own children, it's only her grandmother (Diane Ladd) who has any confidence in her. And when she has a flash of inspiration and creates a self-wringing mop, getting it on the market is an uphill battle. Finally, she catches the attention of Neil (Bradley Cooper), who runs a brand new shopping network called QVC.

The story spans some 40 years, during which Russell gleefully parallels Joy's family chaos with the lurid soap on Terry's television. Of the people around Joy, only Grandma, Tony and her childhood buddy Peggy (Elizabeth Rohm) believe in her. So even though her dad's new girlfriend (the fabulous Isabella Rossellini) invests in her mop, no one thinks she'll achieve any real success. This means that Joy's journey is a series of sometimes outrageous obstacles both within and outside her immediate circle. And of course the biggest barrier is her gender, because almost no one accepts the idea that she might be a genius.

Oscars 2014 Predictions: David O Russell's 'American Hustle'

In the first of our Oscars 2014 prediction series, we take a look at American Hustle, David O Russell’s follow up to last year’s highly acclaimed Silver Linings Playbook. Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence return to add to an impressive cast, but can O Russell build upon steering his leading lady to a Best Actress win?

The film has a touch of the ‘Argo’ about it – and not the popular British catalogue-based retail chain. No, last year’s winning film – Ben Affleck’s winning film. It chronicles FBI's 1978 ABSCAM sting operation, designed to bring down a series of corrupt public officials.

American Hustle Trailer

Irving Rosenfeld is one of America's most talented con artists but his world of ladies and luxury is hanging in the balance when threatening circumstances force him, along with his temptress business partner and lover Sydney Prosser, to lend his talents to a sting operation set up by the FBI and led by the slightly unbalanced agent Richie DiMaso. Together they set out to uncover the corrupt campaigns behind Carmine Polito, the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey and a powerful political operator. However, Irving's wife Rosalyn Rosenfeld is getting more and more suspicious of her husband's business life and, with his lewd extramarital affairs getting more and more daring, it isn't long before she is driven to extreme lengths to uncover her private issues while in the meantime threatening the stability of the whole operation.

This gangster drama features an all-star cast that will keep you gripped from start to finish. It has been directed by the Oscar nominated David O. Russell ('Silver Linings Playbook', 'I Heart Huckabees', 'Three Kings'), who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Eric Singer ('The International') in his second feature film. 'American Hustle' will be released in cinemas over in the UK on December 20th 2013.

It’s difficult to escape the notion that David O Russell is turning into one of the biggest American movie director because, well, he is. With The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook under his belt, American Hustle is set to propel him into Oscar stardom, if he needed any more propelling, that is.

Director-actor partnerships are fun - they define careers. Think Martin Scorsese/Robert de Niro, Quentin Tarantino/Christoph Waltz, Danny Boyle/Cillian Murphy, Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe and Wes Anderson/Bill Murray – if there’s one thing brilliant directors do, it’s keep hold of their favourite actors.

Robert De Niro Tears Up Discussing Bipolar Disorder On Katie

Robert De Niro Katie Couric David O Russell

Silver Linings Playbook has been out a few months, racked up some fine box office figures and is heading towards the Oscars with a chance of glory – but Robert De Niro still gets teary-eyed thinking about its content matter.

De Niro was with director David O Russell and co-star Bradley Cooper on Katie Couric’s show Katie, to talk about the Oscar-nominated film, which deals with issues of bipolar disorder. O Russell’s son suffers from bipolar, and De Niro was asked if he felt a greater responsibility in the film because of that. "Of course, I um –- I understand," replied De Niro said while becoming dewy-eyed. "I don't like to get emotional," the usually stoic actor said, while getting choked up. "But I know exactly what he goes through."

Russell stepped in and confirmed that this wasn’t the first time De Niro had gotten emotional thinking about the subject matter. "When I first was in his apartment and I was talking about the screenplay this what happened," the 54 year-old commented. "And I thought he was having Hay Fever and I realized he was having an emotional reaction. I sat there and I watched Robert De Niro cry for 10 minutes. And I said, Wow, he's really connecting with this material and this could be a beautiful thing if it worked out." And you have to admit that it really has. But to what extent? We’ll find out on Oscars night, February 24.

What Made Robert De Niro Cry On Katie Couric Show?

Robert De Niro Katie Couric Bradley Cooper David O Russell

When Katie Couric invited Robert De Niro, Bradley Cooper and David O. Russell on to her chat show to talk about the Oscar nominated Silver Linings Playbook, she probably did not expect to be passing a hanky to a crying Robert De Niro. That’s exactly what did happen though, on the show, which aired yesterday. After listening to David speaking about his experiences of having a son with bipolar disorder, DeNiro was unable to answer Couric’s next question, as he was too emotional.

Choking back tears, DeNiro didn’t explain much about his own experiences, but said “I don't like to get emotional, but I know exactly what [Russell] goes through.” Bradley Cooper, sat next to him on the sofa, leant over and patted his co-star on the back to comfort him and appeared to get tearful himself. The movie’s director, David O. Russell picked up the answer, sensing that DeNiro was unable to end the silence himself. “When I first was in (Robert DeNiro’s) apartment and I was talking to him about the screenplay, this is what happened. “I thought he was having hay fever, then I realized he was having an emotional reaction and I sat there and watched Robert De Niro cry for 10 minutes and I said, 'Wow he's really connecting with this material and this would be beautiful thing if it could work out, because I think his heart would be there' and it is there.”

Silver Linings Playbook, which also stars Jennifer Lawrence, has been nominated for eight Academy Awards. The awards ceremony is held on February 24, 2013.

Silver Linings Playbook? Argo? Lincoln? Your Oscars Cheat Sheet For Best Picture!

Ben Affleck Steven Spielberg Tom Hooper David O Russell Joaquin Phoenix Philip Seymour Hoffman Michael Haneke Bradley Cooper Jennifer Lawrence Kathryn Bigelow Daniel Day Lewis Hugh Jackman Helena Bonham Carter Russell Crowe Anne Hathaway Paul Thomas Anderson Ang Lee Quvenzhane Wallis

David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook - a stunning dark comedy starring Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper - appears to have hijacked the Oscars race. Russell was tipped for a golden statuette with The Fighter, though missed out on the directing prize to Tom Hooper (The Kings Speech). His latest movie has certainly thrown a spanner into the works for the greatest film prize of them all, so we've compiled an Oscars cheat sheet for Best Picture in 2013. So read on, before cleverly dropping the information into conversations with your friends.

Who's the frontrunner?

There's still a handful of likely Oscar contenders to be released, though the eight or ten movies most strongly tipped to get nominated for Best Picture are now in place. The list is headed by two movies: Ben Affleck's thriller Argo and Steven Spielberg's historical drama Lincoln. The bookmakers cannot choose between the two, but most give the former's movie the edge as recent history suggests this type of film is likely to please the younger looking Academy. The Hurt Locker famously usurped Avatar in 2009, and Affleck's slick movie has much in common with Kathryn Bigelow's classic Iraq War film. As mentioned, both films are pretty much neck-and-neck in the betting, though Argo is generally available at 3/1 while Spielberg's epic is around 4/1.

Silver Linings Playbook Review

Excellent

Writer-director David O. Russell's out-of-control filmmaking style is perfectly suited to a romantic-comedy involving mental illness, and he infuses the film with a sparky unpredictability that's echoed in the perfectly graded performances of the entire cast. Cleverly, even though most of the characters are clinically unhinged, they're all likeable and easy to identify with.

Cooper stars as Pat, who has spent eight months in a mental hospital before his mother (Weaver) comes to take him home early. His dad (De Niro) isn't so sure it's a good idea, but everyone's happy to have him home. And since he finally accepts that he's bipolar, Pat is ready to get on with life. But it's not so easy. He's prevented from reuniting with his wife because of a restraining order, so he visits mutual friends (Stiles and Ortiz) instead. And they set him up with Tiffany (Lawrence), who's psychologically damaged in her own way. Recognising similar needs, they agree to help each other.

Yes, the film has a clear rom-com premise, but the characters are so unpredictable that we are never quite sure what they'll say or do next. And it's not like Pat and Tiffany are the only unstable people here: they're just the only ones with official diagnoses. All of which gives the actors almost too much colourful material to work with. Cooper is a likeable, charming presence at the centre, eliciting our sympathy even when he does something stupid. And Lawrence delivers a full-on performance that often takes our breath away with its clever layering.

Pat Solitano has just come out of a mental institution where he was sent after a violent altercation with his wife's secret lover. Now he has lost his house, his job as a teacher, and his marriage is unsalvageable. He moves back in with his parents in order to build himself a life and make things up with his wife, but putting the past behind him isn't as easy as he'd hoped. He meets a woman called Tiffany who happens to be in a similar situation; she has also lost her job and her husband has passed away. The pair begin to get close as Tiffany promises to help him get back with his wife in return for him doing her a big favour. Both are still determinedly attached to their former spouses but their feelings betray them as their bond grows closer.

'Silver Linings Playbook' has been adapted from the comedy drama novel of the same name by Matthew Quick and directed and written by David O. Russell ('Three Kings', 'I Heart Huckabees', 'The Fighter'). It's a wonderful story of how the brightest things can come out of the darkest situations and will hit the UK on November 21st 2012.

Spanking The Monkey Review

Very Good
Like trip-hop group Massive Attack, David O. Russell started off quiet and slowly became loud as all get-out. With all the craziness and banter that came out over Russell's philosophical slapstick masterpiece I Heart Huckabees, it's hard to believe that his foray began with this very quiet, very shocking film. Even the settings seem to have slowly become more and more convoluted: Spanking the Monkey was filmed in a quiet, almost-Podunk town in upstate New York, I Heart Huckabees is set in the sprawling, bombastic landscape of Los Angeles. However many differences I can name, there's no denying that both films are Russell's; they both exude a peculiarity and hypnotic style that piss plenty of people off.

Raymond (Jeremy Davies) is prepping himself for a very rewarding medical internship when his father, Tom (Benjamin Hendrickson), insists that he return home to take care of his sick mother (Alberta Watson) who has broken her leg. As all college students are, Ray becomes randy and hormonal with mounting professional frustration, the constant physical contact with his mother and the inclusion of Toni (Carla Gallo), a high school student that he tries to deflower. The rest of the movie is, essentially, leading up to the big climax of Ray getting frisky with his mom in an incestuous, liquor-driven free-for-all. It's easily one of the more interesting films about oedipal relations, but there are problems.

Very Good
Probably the best mother-son incest movie ever made, and I mean that from the heart. Incidentally, this is David O. Russell's first film, launching his career as a purveyor of the truly bizarre.
