Despicable Me 2's Box Office Conquest Over Grown Ups 2

Steve Carell Adam Sandler Guillermo Del Toro Chris Rock David Spade Kevin James

In this weekend's battle of the light-hearted sequels, Despicable Me 2 has come out on top of the weekend's movie charts in the United States and Canada beating Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups 2, despite the children's animation having been released on July 3rd in both countries. Despicable Me 2 raked in $44.8 million (£29.6m) from Friday to Sunday, leaving Grown Ups 2 slightly behind with takings of $42.5 million (£28.1m) in its first US weekend, according to Reuters. Though Grown Ups 2 is only marginally behind on its first days of release, it can't be an easy pill to swallow for actor Sandler who not only had his movie panned by critics before it was even released, but also had to relive the ordeal of being mauled by a cheetah whilst on safari in Africa on David Letterman's show.

Guillermo Del Toro's big-budget monsters vs. robots movie, Pacific Rim looked set to be a box office smash after it's exciting trailers and intriguing premise but had to contend with third place in a weekend dominated by the friendlier comedies. In an audience break-down provided by Forbes, "The film played 19% IMAX, 50% 3D, 61% male and 47% under-25 years old," showing a promising chunk of younger theatregoers.

Jack And Jill Trailer

Tommy Boy Review

Weak
Given time and some top-rate producing talent, David Spade and Chris Farley might have evolved into a Martin and Lewis for the 21st century, but we'll never know. They only had two outings together, Tommy Boy and Black Sheep, before the red-faced Farley overindulged himself to death in 1997. Of the two films, Tommy Boy is better (and has since become an inexplicable cult hit), but neither one is much good, and for that, aim the blame at Lorne Michaels, who has a very spotty track record of creating decent features for his Saturday Night Live stars. For every Wayne's World, there are three Coneheads.

Tommy "Boy" Callahan (Farley) has just graduated from college after seven years, much to the delight of his beloved father Big Tom (Brian Dennehy), buy no sooner does the widowed Big Tom marry his second wife (Bo Derek) than he drops dead of a heart attack. Now Tommy Boy has to rescue the family's brake shoe business before it's devoured by arch-rival Ray Zalinksy (Dan Aykroyd) while he also keeps an eye on the evil Beverly's schemes and her equally evil son Paul's (Rob Lowe) sabotage.

Lost & Found Review

Weak
At last the public's thirst for a David Spade-Sophie Marceau comedy is quenched with this story of a hapless restaurant owner who kidnaps his neighbor's dog in order to get cozy with her. Harmless, yet painfully stupid. The first down a black hole sucking that Sophie Marceau's career has taken since Braveheart. (See also The World is Not Enough.)

Coneheads Review

OK
It sounds weird to say it, but Coneheads the movie is underrated. How come it's better than your typical SNL adaptation? A new spin on the original skit with some fresh stars like Sinbad and McKean plus a generous special effects budget fill in the gaps when the movie flags. Plus a revival of "Tainted Love" doesn't hurt.
