There’s hope that ‘The Vicar Of Dibley’ could make a TV comeback, nearly a decade after its final season aired on the BBC. It comes after actress Dawn French revealed that she would be interested in playing Rev. Geraldine Granger again after taking part in a Comic Relief special last year.

When asked about the chances of the series making a comeback, French said: “You know we now have Church law in the UK that women could be Bishops, so who knows? Watch this space — she might get a promotion!”

The 58-year-old added that if the series was to come back, it would have to change. “Our old guys are really old now, so I don’t think we could revisit it, because it’s just too different. But it could change,” French said.

‘The Vicar Of Dibley’ ran for three series on BBC One from 1994 to 2007 and also produced a number of one-off specials. The comedy followed French as Geraldine Granger, a female vicar in a small town who was appointed following the 1992 legislation by the Church of England that permitted the ordination of women.

The series was a ratings hit for BBC One with over 12million viewers tuning into the final episode in 2007 to watch Granger finally marry Harry Kennedy. During its run it was nominated for six BAFTA awards and picked up three British Comedy Awards.
