Although Dick Clark died last April, he was certainly not forgotten on New Year's Eve, as a two-hour ABC special, New Year's Rockin' Eve Celebrates Dick Clark, averaged 9.35 million viewers -- more than twice the number of viewers who tuned in for any other program airing between 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Monday night. Then at 10:00 p.m. Dick Clark's Primetime New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest soared to 13.26 million viewers, clobbering NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly, which captured 3.80 million viewers (although NBC issued a press release observing that the number represented its best New Year's Eve ratings in three years). Summing up the ABC telecast, E! Online observed, While the evening could have easily taken on a very somber tone, Seacrest somehow managed to create an upbeat show that combined the spirit of Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with a Celebration of the late great's life. Ratings for the post-primetime period leading up to and following the dropping of the Times Square ball were not immediately available.
