Actor Dick Van Dyke Narrowly Misses Roadside Inferno, Rescued By Random Passerby

Dick Van Dyke

87-year-old iconic actor Dick Van Dyke was in a serious traffic accident earlier today. The news of Van Dyke’s crash and his quick rescue by passerby Jason Pennington was first reported by TMZ. According to the website, the actor is safe and well, all thanks to Pennington’s well timed intervention.

"Lucky escape" doesn't begin to cover it.

According to the accidental hero’s own recount of the incident, he was driving along the 101, when he saw a car on the side of the road, quickly filling up with smoke, and an elderly man inside. He stepped out and helped Van Dyke, who was seemingly struggling to get free. Moments later, the fire reached the gas tank and, much like in the movies, the car burst into flames.

According to TMZ.com, a guy named Jason Pennington was driving along the 101 when he saw a car full of smoke on the side of the road with an elderly man hunched over the wheel. Pennington pulled over, ran up to the car and found Van Dyke struggling inside.

The hero opened the driver door and pulled the actor out of the vehicle as flames began to tear through the engine. Dick was understandably disorientated, though he didn't require medical attention and was fine soon after. In fact, his wife came to pick him up and the pair cruised home together.

Dick Van Dyke Pays Tribute To 'Finest Generation' As He Accepts SAG Lifetime Achievement Honor

Dick Van Dyke

"I've been borrowing from Dick every time I step in front of the camera” said Alec Baldwin as he presented Dick Van Dyke with his Lifetime Achievement Honor at the Screen Actors Guild Awards last night (January 27, 2013), but the veteran was in just as much of a humble mood himself as he paid testament to all those who’d turned up to the event in Hollywood in his speech.

"I have to say one thing, my lord and savior Carl Reiner couldn't be here tonight," the actor said of his long-time pal and fellow actor. "There's a lot of flu going around." Van Dyke of course will be best known for his role as Bert the chimney sweep in the musical Mary Poppins, but he went on to forge a hugely successful TV career in the wake of that, his profile having a huge resurgence in the 90’s with the hospital detective drama Diagnosis Murder. "I've knocked around in this business for 70 years and I still haven't quite figured out what it is that I do” the 87 year-old said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “But the years have just been full of surprises for me and a lot of fun - aren't we lucky to have found a line of work that doesn't require growing up? I love that."

Then, in a stirring testament to those in front of him, he remarked "I'm looking at the greatest generation of actors in the history of acting. You've all lifted the art to another place now… if this very heavy object right here means that I can refer to you as my peers, then I'm a very lucky man."

Top 10 Celebrity Weddings Of 2012: From Nutty Nuptials To Classy Ceremonies

Justin Timberlake Amber Tamblyn David Cross Questlove Matthew Mcconaughey Camila Alves Drew Barrymore Carey Mulligan Natalie Portman Ryan Reynolds Blake Lively Giovanni Ribisi Cat Power Dick Van Dyke Jessica Biel

There must have been something in the air this year because we literally had too many celebrity weddings to choose from for this list (sorry Alec Baldwin, you can stop reading now, you got bumped), and it was a tough job whittling it down to 10. So, who DID make the grade in our run-down 2012’s best nuptials?

10. Amber Tamblyn and David Cross

What was the highlight of actress Amber Tamblyn and actor David Cross’ wedding? Well, sadly, even Tamblyn’s stunning gown couldn’t upstage the antics of their unofficial photographer, Questlove. The happy snapper not only DJ’d at the wedding, but also decided to take a number of pics of the happy couple and stick them on his Instagram account. The Roots drummer revealed pretty much everything from the bride’s arrival, to the cutting of the cake, using the hashtag #weddinginthewoods. So, Amber and David – you just about made the grade, but you have your crazy DJ to thank for it.

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Review

Good
I'm old enough to have seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang during its original theatrical run, and I've just about recovered. Like The Wizard of Oz, this movie has the power both to delight and to traumatize children. I'm not sure my parents quite knew what they were putting me through.

Based on a story by Ian Fleming (of James Bond fame), produced by Cubby Broccoli (of James Bond fame), and written by Roald Dahl (who knew a thing or two about scaring children), this gadgety fantasy finds unsuccessful inventor Caractacus Potts (Dick Van Dyke) working on a supercar that can both fly and float while also taking care of his dotty father (Lionel Jeffries) and his two children Jeremy and Jemimah (Adrian Hall and Heather Ripley). Also on hand, a potential love interest for Potts named Truly Scrumptious (Sally Ann Howes), heiress to the Toot Sweet candy fortune.

Mary Poppins Review

Excellent
Parents, you have a responsibility. Your kids should not know Julie Andrews just from the two Princess Diaries movies. Luckily, you have an opportunity since Mary Poppins, the movie that landed Andrews an Oscar and made her a star 40 years ago, has just been released on DVD for its 40th anniversary.

Andrews is just perfect in the title role, a mystical nanny who literally falls from the London sky and into the lives of two lonely children in 1910. The kids desperately need some kind of attention. Their father (David Tomlinson) is a workaholic, brown-nosing banker, who treats his kids as two obstacles in keeping an orderly home. Mom (Glynis Johns) is no better, a dingbat who prefers supporting social causes to spending time with her kids. Funny how little things have changed, huh?
