Ultra Music Festival turned out to be a bit of a rollercoaster of a weekend for everyone this year but, as usual, it's been three days of some of the most explosive electronic acts of our generation.

Ultra Music Festival 2014 logo

It was a terribly disappointing moment for festival goers (and, indeed, viewers; those who were viewing it live online) when it was announced that Saturday's main stage headliner Avicii would not make it to Miami for his set after being hospitalised earlier in the week for an emergency operation. However, that initial fan frustration was greatly eased by the arrival of Deadmau5, who took the Swedish DJ's place to much delightful surprise. Further entertainment came with some eagerly anticipated headline sets from Tiesto and Hardwell on the Friday and Sunday respectively.

Reincarnated Review

Good

There's a nagging sense of indulgence that leaves us wondering just how truthful this documentary actually is as it follows Snoop Dogg on a voyage of personal discovery. Part of the problem is that he smokes so much weed that we're not even sure how much he'll remember about his decision to travel to Jamaica to reinvent himself. But at least he has this film to remind him of what happened.

Snoop, aka Calvin Broadus, decides to record a reggae album instead of his usual rap, so he takes his entourage to Kingston to explore the Rastafarian beliefs of his idol Bob Marley. He knows this will involve shifting his musical focus from his violent past to a more love-filled approach, and this is affirmed when he meets original Wailer Bunny (who renames him Snoop Lion) and Marley's son Damian. They explore key locations from the Wailers' past, smoking an almost comical amount of ganja with the locals. And along the way, Snoop reminisces about his earlier life working with Dr Dre, the late Tupac Shakur and his cousin Nate Dogg, who died in 2011 after a series of strokes.

All of this is presented in a loosely linear narrative, as their experiences in Jamaica are combined with extended flashbacks to events that have affected Snoop's life along the way. It's an intensely intimate odyssey, as Snoop talks openly about leaving his life as a gangster and pimp behind him and returning to his wife Shante and their children. Director Capper lets us watch all of this through Snoop's eyes, which creates a sharp portrait of an intelligent man on a strongly artist quest for meaning.

South By Southwest SXSW Myspace Gig Kid Cudi

South by Southwest Kid Cudi Diplo

Myspace is still a thing that exists apparently, as we were reminded during day three of SXSW. Kid Cudi, Hit-boy and Diplo all performed at the heavily hip hop themed showcase and in fact, turned it into one of the liveliest events of the musical portion of SXSW so far.

The artists performed to a packed house at Austin’s Coppertank Event Center. That doesn’t sound like too big of an achievement, considering the “house” has a total capacity of 800 seats, but those are the kind of hip underground shows that everyone wants to be at anyway, right?

The show kicked off with Hit-boy at 10.45pm, as the rapper performed some material from his upcoming project All I’ve Ever Dreamed Of. The rapper/producer has some pretty strong links to MySpace, which pretty much jump-started his career, and now, his upcoming project will be streamed exclusively on the site. The highlight of the night was probably Kid Cudi’s set though, which featured crowd-pleasers from his “Man on the Moon” project and concluded with the ever popular “Pursuit of Happiness.”

Psy Returns With 'Gangnam Style Remix Style' EP Featuring Diplo And Afrojack

Psy Diplo Afrojack 2 Chainz Tyga

Psy is back with his hit multi-platinum single 'Gangnam Style' but this time introduces us to a collection of remixes just as the craze was starting to settle down!

The South Korean popstar is here with his new EP 'Remix Style' which features some stunning remixes from Diplo and Afrojack as well as some exciting collaborations with 2 Chainz and Tyga. The EP was released today (March 5th 2013) and will definitely have us enjoying the overly played track another time round. These new collaborations are particularly exciting to hear as he had told MTV News earlier in the year that he wasn't planning on any just yet. 'I don't think I'll be doing any collaborations until my new track is done, and it's not done yet, but I'm thinking of doing it by myself, so I can prove I can do it one more time', he told them.

'Gangnam Style' became a worldwide hit topping the charts in numerous countries but it is best known for its music video featuring the singer performing a particularly striking dance routine. The video has been viewed more than 1.3 billion times on YouTube making it the first to reach 1 billion and, indeed, the most watched video ever on the video site.

Twitter Feud Between Azealia Banks And Angel Haze Draws In Diplo

Azealia Banks Angel Haze Diplo

Twitter has made celebrity feuds much more frequent and much more fun. The latest spat is between Azealia Banks and New York rapper and singer Angel Haze, who has just been included in the nominated list of BBC's Sound of 2013 (regardless of the outcome of this argument, she's definitely one to watch).

Apparently, Banks and Haze have 'beef' going back a while, but it came to a head via Twitter lately, when Haze retaliated to a tweet left by Banks which was indirectly aimed at Haze- or so Haze claims. The retaliation came in the form of a threatening tweet (which has since been deleted). Banks then said:

'Push And Shove': A Homage To The 1990s, Or Have No Doubt Moved On?

No Doubt Gwen Stefani Diplo Tony Kanal Andy Gill

This week, No Doubt release their sixth studio album, Push and Shove. Their lead singer Gwen Stefani may have soldiered on into a new millennium with her solo material but her band seem content to revisit the sights and sounds of the 1990s – the decade when they made their name. In an interview with The Guardian, Stefani insists that her solo records were “never meant to be taken seriously” and the band seem to be re-treading old ground with their new material, even with forward-thinking producer Diplo at the helm in the studio.

In the video for the first new single from No Doubt, ‘Settle Down,’ Stefani wears a black vest with a visible bra, bold shiny trousers and a giant watch: “To original fans it will prompt nostalgia, to new ones…it will probably look like a very on-trend 90s fashion revival.” Gwen insists that it “feels so much more natural being back in this mode” and she has fixed the broken relationship that she had with songwriting partner Tony Kanal (whom she used to date).

That return to the band’s trademark sound will please hardened fans of the band but may prove to be a sticking point for those who have fallen by the wayside. Andy Gill of The Independent states that the band have “only the most tentative divergences from previously tried
and tested strategies, which gives Push and Shove a character that could
be described as either dated or timeless.” A return to form, though is a good thing for Entertainment Weekly, who write “Gwen Stefani pogos as hard as she ever did in her Anaheim-strip-mall ska days. But she's also just as neurotic, which adds depth to her love songs.”

Diplo, Blow Your Head Album Review

Globe trotting DJ, producer, and dance music minor celebrity Diplo has taken it upon himself to introduce an international audience to the dark, tense, bass-fixated British dance genre known as dubstep. He's the man responsible for Blow Your Head, a distinctly patchy compilation which may well succeed in winning the scene some new fans, but doesn't offer much that will excite existing ones.
