This weekend Disney’s Planes sequel Fire and Rescue hits theatres, the animation is a spin off of Pixar’s successful Cars series, but has been produced by Disney Toon Studios. So far the critics have been kind to the sequel, noting that it does build upon its predecessor. But let's face it, Planes: Fire and Rescue is no future Disney classic. The studio, who in recent years had been living in the shadow of Pixar, seems to be enjoying a bit of a renaissance as of late, thanks in no small part to Frozen’s enormous success. So while Planes: Fire and Rescue might not be the great Disney animation we were all hoping for, what other films does the legendary studio have coming our way over the next few years?

Big Hero Six

In cinemas this November is Big Hero 6, an animated superhero adventure inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name. It will be the first Disney animated film to feature Marvel characters since the company's acquisition of Marvel Entertainment in 2009. Set in a fictional metropolis named San Fransokyo, the film focuses on Hiro Hamada a young robotics prodigy who uncovers a criminal plot. In order to help solve the mystery and fight the city’s crime, Hiro along with his self-created robot Baymax put together a team of inexperienced crime fighters to help solve the mystery. The film will also feature well known Marvel characters such as GoGo Tomag, Wasabi and Honey Lemon.

Zootopia

Directed by Tangled’s Byron Howard, Zootopia tells the story of Nick Wilde, a fast talking fox who lives in the animal city of Zootopia. When Nick gets accused of a crime he didn't commit he’s forced to go on the run, but hot on his tail is Lt. Judy Hops, a rabbit who happens to be the city’s top cop. But when both Nick and Judy become targets of a conspiracy, they must team up and discover sometimes even natural enemies can become best friends. Zootopia is slated for a March 2016 release.

Giants

Disney is also in the early stages of producing a movie based on the classic tale of Jack and the Beanstalk. Giants, as it’s currently known, is is expected to hit the big screen in 2016, after Zootopia. Tangled’s co director Nathan Greno is said to be involved in the movie’s development.
