Newark police spokesman Sgt. Ronald Glover said the victim reported that he encountered DMX along with his entourage at an Exxon station on the 600 block of Route 21 around 12.30am.

"The two had a brief conversation about rap music and during the conversation a male in DMX's entourage, showed the victim a gun and demanded the victim's money," Glover said in a statement.

The victim pulled out $3,200 in cash from his pocket and DMX "snatched the money out of his hand" before jumping into a black Cadillac Escalade and left the scene. The victim briefly followed the vehicle and noted down the licence plate.

"They probably thought we had a gun, because he has his hand in his pocket," the alleged victim's friend told WABC. "That's why he asked him what was in his pocket. Then he was like 'nah, there's nothing in my pocket,' then he showed him the money."

As yet, no arrests have been made and no criminal charges have been filed.

DMX was scheduled to headline an old-school hip-hop concert at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark on Saturday night.

The rapper was charged with dog fighting, animal cruelty and drug possession violations. In 2010, he spent several months in jail for violating his probation.
