Former Doctor Who star David Tennant will do battle with his successor Matt Smith at Britain's upcoming TVChoice Awards.

Smith has won a Best Actor nomination for his role as the Time Lord in the cult sci-fi show, and he will go up against the man he replaced, Tennant, who has a nod for his part in hit crime drama Broadchurch.

The two Doctors also face competition from the stars of two period dramas - Jeremy Piven for his role in Mr Selfridge and Downton Abbey's Brendan Coyle.

Tennant's Broadchurch co-star Olivia Colman will also go up against Smith's sci-fi sidekick Jenna Coleman for the Best Actress award, along with Call The Midwife's Miranda Hart and Sheridan Smith for Mrs Biggs.

Popular murder mystery Broadchurch is also featured in the Best New Drama category, along with Gillian Anderson's thriller The Fall, Mr Selfridge and detective series Ripper Street, while Best Drama will be a fight between Downton Abbey, Doctor Who, Call The Midwife and Waterloo Road.

The trophies will be handed out at a ceremony in London on 9 September (13).
