Just under a year after Elton John called for a boycott of Dolce & Gabbana over the comments the deign duo made about children born through IVF, the designers have unveiled their new collection which celebrates same-sex couples. The new #DGfamily collection features images of diverse families, appearing on handbags and T-shirts.

Gabbana’s Instagram account showed images of the new collection, including a handbag with a design featuring two fathers and three children, another showed two women holding two children. Both images were hashtagged #DGfamily.

The new collection is in contrast to comments the designers made last year about gay couples raising children. Speaking to Italian magazine Panorama, Dolce said: “We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one.”

“I’m not convinced by those I call the children of chemicals, synthetic children,” the designer added. “Wombs for rent, sperm chosen from a catalogue ... psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation.”

Dolce’s comments attracted widespread criticism, with singer Elton John calling for a boycott of the brand. ‘How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”,’ the 67 year old wrote on Instagram.

‘And shame on you for wagging your judgemental little fingers at IVF - a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children.Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce And Gabbana ever again.’

Dolce later apologised for his comments in an interview with US Vogue in August. “I am so sorry. It was not my intention to offend anyone,” he said. “I’ve talked to Stefano a lot about this. I’ve realised that my words were inappropriate, and I apologise. They are just kids. You don’t need labels, baby labels.”
