Why We're Thinking About Dolly Parton This Christmas

Dolly Parton

It's safe to say that 2016 hasn't been everyone's year, but one person who hasn't failed to put a smile on millions of people's faces is Dolly Parton. This year she's illustrated precisely everything we love about the legendary country singer, from her tunes to her philanthropy.

Dolly Parton2016 has been quite the year for Dolly Parton

She turned 70-years-old this year and yet she still rocks her bottle blonde locks, bright make-up, sexy curves and rhinestone-studded stage outfits better than anyone. But it's not just her glamour that has maintained her household name status, not is it just her epic international hits like 'Jolene', '9 To 5', 'I Will Always Love You' and 'Coat of Many Colors'.

Jack White Calls For Gender Equality

Jack White White Stripes Dolly Parton

Jack White gave a speech on gender equality in Nashville on Wednesday (13.07.16).

The 41-year-old rocker - who fronted The White Stripes before calling time on the band in 2011 - was appointed to the Nashville Gender Equality Council and took to the stage at a press conference for the launch of a study into the issue in the city.

Jack - who is from Detroit - said: ''In my life in the arts, I have always considered it unfair when producing a record, for example, that a drummer would be paid less than a singer, simply because that singer had an agent or representative. They are both creating regardless of their instrument or even their experience. They should be paid the same. Now wouldn't it be just as ridiculous to pay two fiddle players a different wage because one of them is male and one is female? I think so. It is embarrassing that in 2016 there are any differences in benefits or wages between genders in our society. Gender equity is something that should've been solved a century ago worldwide, and it is sad that we even need to address it. If the person does the work, the benefits of doing that work, should be equal among all human beings.''

When "sweet natured, older lady" Dolly was discovered at the Glastonbury Festival (28th-29th June), hidden in a small tent with little food and no water, we all assumed something had gone horribly wrong for the headlining country music icon.

As well as hundreds of thousands of punters, Somerset's Worthy Farm played host to one of the strongest line-ups seen in recent years, including Metallica, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, Jack White and Elbow.

Pop star Lily Allen raised a few eyebrows but more cheers with her foul-mouthed rant, whilst country rock superstar Dolly Parton was the biggest crowd draw ever seen and Rudimental were reduced to tears when their set was cut short due to the stormy weather.

Dolly Parton - 'Blue Smoke Tour' First Direct Arena, Leeds June 2014 Live Review

There are showgirls and then there's Dolly Parton; a larger-than-life, joyful megastar who is still concerned with impressing her fans and making sure every one of them feels included. As a sea of pink, fluffy cowboy hats and rhinestone-embellished denim vests filed into the new First Direct Leeds Arena on Friday night, it would be easy yet incorrect to dismiss Parton as a gimmick who only appeals to tipsy older ladies on a hen night.

Dolly Parton - Live Review

Eschewing any support acts for a two-part, gargantuan set to celebrate new greatest hits album 'Blue Smoke', Dolly struts out onstage wearing a glittering, corseted dress - armed and ready to give a country and western hoedown to remember. Splicing her 1978 hit 'Baby I'm Burning' together with Alicia Keys' 'Girl On Fire', Parton kicked off a riotous celebration of country, folk, bluegrass and pop.

Early sound difficulties make the first set of songs hard on the ears and the sound completely cuts out mid-way through 'Jolene', leading to farcical "we can't hear you!" chants from the audience and charades from Parton. The issues are soon rectified and brushed away, and another rendition of 'Jolene' is tacked onto the end of the set to much applause.

After months of speculation, the official line-up has been confirmed for the 2014 Glastonbury Festival, which will be held from the 27th to the 29th June this year. The festival tweeted this year's snazzy line-up poster which listed a tonne of previously unconfirmed acts. Sadly, and despite the rumours, it doesn't look like Prince will be getting funky at Glasto but the appearance of Elbow, Arcade Fire, Kasabian, The Black Keys, and Jack White should make up for the Purple One's absence.

The Rap Game Will Never Be The Same After This Dolly Parton Performance

Dolly Parton Queen Latifah Miley Cyrus

Dolly Parton recently took to the stage of Queen Latifah’s show and it was strange, to say the least. Sporting a black bodysuit and a blond afro, Parton took on a whole new rap persona, which looked awkward enough to remind everyone of their aunt at Christmas dinner.

Dolly Parton, Letterman Show
There were plenty of references to Parton's "wrecking balls."

Not to bash Ms Parton, though, the country singer rapped; "Queen Latifah, she da queen/ Of hip-hop, rap, TV and screen/ She da queen of her own hood/ But I'm the queen of Dollywood, yo," she raps. "I own my territory/ Put that in your pipe and smoke it.”

Folk You! Emmylou Harris Denies Hit-And-Run Attack In Court

Emmylou Harris Bob Dylan Dolly Parton

Emmylou Harris has entered a plea of "not guilty" after being charged with a hit-and-run attack in October. The legendary country singer, songwriter and backing vocalist was charged when police deemed she had crashed her rental into another car while travelling on the 405 freeway, fleeing the scene shortly afterwards.

According to TMZ.com, the Los Angeles County District Attorney filed the misdemanor charge against Emmylou today (January 31, 2013), though the 65-year-old Grammy winner denied the whole thing. She is charged with slamming into another person's car on October 1st 2012 around 10pm, before taking off. Emmylou's representative acknowledged the incident, though described it as a "garden-variety accident that happens every day on the 405," claiming the singer only left the scene because had no idea she had hit another car. Worryingly, Emmylou's not guilty plea means she faces around 6 months in jail if she is convicted of the hit-and-run charge.

A long-time collaborator of Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, Mark Knopfler and Dolly Parsons, Emmylou remains one of the biggest names in folk music. Her last studio album, 2010's Hard Bargain, reached No.3 on the U.S. country chart and No.18 on the Billboard Hot 200.

Did You Believe The Dolly Parton Rumours? Well They're False

Dolly Parton Oprah Winfrey

Dolly Parton rumours have flooded the Internet recently, and in case you didn't know, they fixated on her sexuality, as so many do these days. First off; no one should care if someone's gay or straight, as it has no bearing on what made them famous in the first place, and secondly, Dolly Parton has nullified these rumours in an interview.

The rumours alleged that Parton enjoyed a sexual relationship with one of her oldest friends, Judy Ogle. "Judy and I have been best friends since we were, like, in third and fourth grade," Parton, who has been married to her husband, Carl Dean, for 46 years, explained during the sitdown with ABC's Juju Chang. "I mean, I love her as much as I love anybody in the whole world. But we're not romantically involved." She went on to joke about how her and Oprah Winfrey - who was also subject to similar rumours because of her close friendship with Gayle King - couldn't have female buddies without being labelled as lesbian in the press. To be fair to her, it is a little ridiculous.

During the interview, Parton also amusingly noted that she once entered herself in a Dolly Parton drag queen contest and got the least applause of any of the contestants. "They just thought I was some little short gay guy," she laughed.

Dolly Parton Rumors Prove To Be False (She Isn't A Lesbian)

Dolly Parton Oprah Winfrey Gayle King

Dolly Parton rumors have been building for the past couple of weeks, suggesting the country legend may be in a secret relationship with her best friend Judy Ogle. The speculation echoed that surrounding Oprah Winfrey and Gayle King last year and - as in that case - has proven to be false.

Dolly set the record straight on her sexual orientation during an interview with Nightline, saying she was well aware of the rumors though deemed them ultimately untrue. "Judy and I have been best friends since we were like in the third and fourth grade. We still just have a great friendship and relationship and I love her as much as I love anybody in the whole world, but we're not romantically involved." We're not quite sure where this story came from in the first place, considering Dolly has been married to the same man for 46 years. The singer made the comparison between herself and Oprah, noting, "Like Gayle, her friend, Judy, my friend ... [people] just think that you just can't be that close to somebody."

Dolly releases her new motivational memoir 'Dream More' on November 27, 2012. The book covers her childhood in the poor area of Sevierville, Tennessee, to her eventual rise to fame. In it, she reveals how she modelled the signature voluptuous look on the town tramp!

‘Steel Magnolias’ Producer Sues Lifetime Over Queen Latifah Remake

Queen Latifah Phylicia Rashad Shirley Maclaine Julia Roberts Dolly Parton

Victoria L. White, the producer who worked on the tearjerker movie ‘Steel Magnolias’, is suing Lifetime over a television remake, claiming she isn’t getting the cash – or credit - that she deserves, reports TMZ.com.

White, an executive producer of the 1989 film starring Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Shirley Maclaine, filed a suit against Sony Pictures and Lifetime Television over a new television film starring Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad. The legal documents show that White claims to have a “television agreement” that entitles her to a co-producer of co-executive producer credit on any television project based on the film, as well as a $15,000 fee and 3.75% of profits. She alleges that Sony is fully aware of her television deal, mainly because the studio has already adhered to the terms once before. White was listed as a co-producer for the 1992 CBS television movie based ‘Steel Magnolias’. Why Sony and Lifetime have chosen to ignore the contract this time around is unclear.

Though the producer is suing for competition, she also wants an injunction to stop the movie from airing altogether, which seems a little dramatic. The film is set to air on October 7 – i.e. in four days – so we’re going to go out on a limb and say it’s still going to air, anyway.

Joyful Noise Review

OK
Life-affirming to the point of distraction, this comedy is so warm and cosy that it never even approaches believability. If only writer-director Graff had injected the film with half as much earthy energy as he puts into the terrific musical numbers. And let the cast out of the box.

At a down-home church in Pacashau, Georgia, GG (Parton) is peeved when she's not offered the job after her choir-director father (a brief Kris Kristofferson cameo) dies. The new leader is her rival Vi Rose (Latifah), who plans to win the upcoming regional competition with pure gospel. To further stir things up, GG's bad-boy grandson Randy (Jordan) is back in town, and he's smitten with Vi Rose's 16-year-old daughter Olivia (Palmer).
