Don Scannell - Mystery Single Review

Southern Irish accountant Don Scannell has taken his newly released track 'Mystery' from his debut album Three Silver Pieces. It's all about soft melodies, steel guitar, piano and break beat drumming. Don's mellow vocals take you through the developing tale, from darkness to joy. Says Don of the track: "It's one human being seeing another go from a troubled state, to a point of genuine happiness, then insisting they celebrate the fact. I think most adults will have experienced dark days ('black inside') until persisting through to days that 'glow'. The mystery aspect is the awe the helper experiences in seeing how someone can change over time, almost miraculously, and the mystery of loving someone despite their condition."

Financial whizz Don seems to have avoided the pitfalls of personality that numerically and analytically based endeavours can sometimes be associated with. There certainly seems to be no predisposition towards using an economy on words and his turn of phrase is more poetic than any fiscal policy recorded. The arrangement of the track highlights not only the harmony between instrumentation and vocal but also just how sweet and textured Don's voice is. The song is delivered with just the right amount of emotion without becoming mawkish.

Lyrically Don has encapsulated his story with a tender understanding and some very well chosen lines...

'Meet me in my dreams tonight,
by the tall tree at twilight.
Greet me with a kiss, this is my hide-away.
And though it's no surprise jewels come raining from your eyes,
come inside my love I'm feeling high tonight'

With his unique soft folksy voice, married to the gentle break-beat backing, Don Scannel's Mystery has hit upon a winning formula that delivers a very pleasant result.
