Doris Roberts, the actress best known for playing Marie Barone in sitcom ‘Everybody Loves Raymond’ has died aged 90. Roberts' death was first announced by TMZ on Monday (April 18th), with the site reporting the actress had died on Sunday at her home in Los Angeles.

In a statement to People magazine, Roberts’ 'Everybody Loves Raymond' co-star Ray Romano said: “Doris Roberts had an energy and a spirit that amazed me. She never stopped.  Whether working professionally or with her many charities, or just nurturing and mentoring a young, green comic trying to make it as an actor, she did it all with such a grand love for life and people and I will miss her dearly.”

On twitter Patricia Heaton, who played Roberts’ daughter-in-law on the sitcom, added: "Truly the end of an era. My wonderful TV mother-in-law and ELR nemesis Doris Roberts was a consummate professional from whom I learned so much. She was funny and tough and loved life, living it to the fullest. Nothing gave her greater joy that her three wonderful grandchildren, of whom she was so proud. It truly was a privilege Doris. I love you and miss you."

During her lengthly career Roberts was nominated for 11 Emmys, beginning in 1983 when she won the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series award for her role in ‘St. Elsewhere’. She would go on to be nominated seven times for her role as Marie Barone, taking home the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series award on four occasions.

Roberts was married twice, first to Michael Emilio Cannata from 1956 until 1962 and then to novelist and playwright William Goyen, from 1963 until his death in 1983. She is survived by her son Michael, who was also her manager; and three grandchildren
