Dot To Dot

Arranging a festival on a bank holiday weekend is always tempting fate, and inevitably after a week of golden skies a near-continuous downpour greeted the Nottingham leg of Dot To Dot. With 75% of the festival (technically) held under one roof the problem is somewhat alleviated, but first impressions do count, and queuing on a closed road whilst still working down a Sunday dinner is by no means the perfect introduction to a full day and night of music. Neither for that matter are the drinks prices, with brandy and cokes (for example) over o1 more than the typical charge at the same venues. Fortunately with over 12 hours of entertainment there is plenty of opportunity for things to change for the better.

In a year that has seen many festivals fall by the wayside Dot-To-Dot has stood by its strengths in 2012. The one day festival, now it its eighth year, is again held in Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester, with a highly varied line-up that makes up for in ambition what it lacks in identity. As has become typical it is marqueed by a mid-level touring band (The Drums) backed by several long-time up-and-coming acts (Pulled Apart By Horses & Wavves), but where D2D proves more than value for money, at a paltry £20, is on its' undercard..

With a line-up as inconsistent as the days weather it was hard to know what to expect from the 2011 edition of Dot-To-Dot. Pre-festival chat suggested attendance would be severely down on previous years, with a selection of bands that ensured there would be something for everyone but left the days events without any sense of identity.

Dot-To-Dot has made a name for itself as a budget festival with a budget line-up, and the 2011 edition of the festival, held across a number of venues in three cities, sticks to this tradition. With an advance ticket price of £25 for a full day and night of music it is one of the least taxing 'name' festivals in the country, however it is also one of the least inspiring, and sees a continuation of the ever dwindling line-up quality that has plagued Dot-To-Dot for the last few years.
