The musicals will have it at this year's Oliver Awards, the annual ceremony to honour the year's best theatre productions, which will take place on the 13th April. Last year, Matilda The Musical was the evening's grand victor and the theme of Roald Dahl adoration will be continued this year with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and its Willy Wonka, AKA Douglas Hodge, standing out as early favourites.

The childrens musical, along with the 1981 comedy musical Merrily We Roll Along, leads the nominations this year with seven nods each. Next, The Book of Mormon, Once and The Scottsboro Boys are up for six prizes each and will battle it out in the fiercely-fought Best New Musical category.

The Best New Play category contains Chimerica, 1984, Peter and Alice and The Night Alive and the productions up for Best New Opera include The Firework-Maker's Daughter at the Linbury Studio theatre, Royal Opera House, Les Vepres Siciliennes at the Royal Opera House and Wozzeck by English National Opera at the London Coliseum.

Meanwhile, the stage stars up for Best Actor include Henry Goodman for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, Tom Hiddleston for Coriolanus, Rory Kinnear in Othello and Jude Law for Henry V. The actresses nominated for the counterpart prize include Hayley Atwell in The Pride at the Trafalgar Studios, Anna Chancellor for Private Lives, Judi Dench for Peter and Alice and Lesley Manville in Ghosts.

Ghosts' Richard Eyre, Merrily We Roll Along's Maria Friedman, The Scottsboro Boys' Susan Stroman and Chimerica's Lyndsey Turner are all nominated for Best Director whilst the only award voted for by the public - the BBC Radio 2 Audience Award - could go to Les Misérables at the Queen's theatre, Matilda the Musical at the Cambridge theatre, The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's theatre or Wicked at the Apollo Victoria theatre.

The 2014 Olivier Awards will be held on the 13th April at London's Royal Opera House.
