Download Festival - 2016 Review

This year's Download Festival turned out to be a very wet weekend with constant downpours and thunderstorms throughout the three days, but what would 'Drownload' festival be without a little bit of rain? Thick with mud and soggy from the rain, the crowds all gathered looking for a fantastic time and with phenomenal headliners Rammstein, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden the weekend was never going to disappoint. Aside from the wrestling and the creative Zippo lighters that you could engrave in the Zippo Encore booth, as well as get hold of the limited edition Download Zippo lighter, the music line up for this year's festival was phenomenal - and we can't wait for the next Download festival already.

Download Festival - 2016 Review

Friday
There were multiple highlights throughout the weekend, and as we stocked up on burgers, we headed down to the Lemmy stage to catch one of the more out-there acts of the weekend - Babymetal. Babymetal were mesmerising as they always are, with hit songs Gimme Chocolate and Road To Resistance taking the crowd by storm. A giant circle pit opened as the Japanese J-pop/metal band took to the stage and gave a fantastically choreographed performance as always.

Killswitch Engage managed to slay the stage as they always do, even in the torrential downpour that overtook their set, as the band plunged into hit songs My Curse, Strength Of The Mind and My Last Serenade, there was nothing that they can do to disappoint. A huge crowd turned out to watch the band, even in the mudpit that the Lemmy stage gave way to.

Download Festival Rammstein Black Sabbath Iron Maiden Don Broco

This year the festival boasts a stellar line-up with Rammstein, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden all headlining respectively. But that's not all. With Korn, Deftones, Megadeth, Disturbed, Nightwish and many other bands taking to the stages at this year's Download Festival it is set to be a killer weekend.

In light of the unexpected and sad news of the passing of Motorhead's Lemmy earlier this year, the main stage has aptly been renamed The Lemmy Stage. Rammstein return to Download for the second year to headline on the Lemmy stage on the Friday night and many will be expecting an anarchic live performance. The band are due to be preceded by Korn and Killswitch Engage whom will be attracting veteran rock lovers in large crowds.

Download Festival 2014 Review

Download Festival 2014 was a tamer affair than in previous years, largely owing to the event's tightened alcohol and drugs searches, bands being instructed not to encourage the crowds to mosh, more mainstream main stage headliners, fewer boobs being shown on the live camera feed, and the sombre tone of the renamed 'Stephen Sutton Stage'. Instead of holding a silence for the cancer-struck teen, festival attendees took part in a minute of respectful applause, which was paralleled by comedy pop punk band Bowling For Soup's tribute to the late comic, Rik Mayall.

Download Festival 2014 Review

In memoriam sections aside, the festival managed to transform what could be perceived as a weaker line-up compared to its preceding year into a three-day celebration of a broad range of the rock spectrum, filled with bespoke performance gems and quality heavy metal memories. First night closers Avenged Sevenfold brought a larger stage to Donington than they'd ever taken out of the US and combined imposing crypt-inspired adornments with an explosive set that proved on a world stage that they are worthy successors to titans Metallica and Iron Maiden.

The beady-eyed punter will have had a ball spotting the odd and hilarious happenings across the weekend, including a "face-melting" washboard solo from Berlin faux cowboys The BossHoss, punk's immature popsters Bowling For Soup asking a knight to decapitate a giant inflatable sheep, full contact medieval fighting from Battle Heritage, and Killswitch Engage's Jesse Leach inviting the crowd to "dance responsibly" to a particularly heavy breakdown. Ribs were probably broken in the latter instance.

Download Festival In Touching Tribute: The Stephen Sutton Stage

Linkin Park Download Festival

Stephen Sutton’s story touched the hearts of many, raising not just money, but awareness for cancer. Although the £4 million he did manage was truly staggering. And in an act of remembrance for Sutton, the main stage at this year’s Download Festival will be named the Stephen Sutton stage.

One of the things on Sutton’s ‘bucket list’ was to visit the renown metal and rock festival. Aerosmith, Avenged Sevenfold and Linkin Park will be gracing it this year while last year Slipknot, Iron Maiden and Rammstein headlined.

Download 2013 - Live Review

Download 2013, a daring, explosive, loud and (arguably most importantly) heavy line up, that the late Maurice Jones would be proud of. From classic 'Monsters of Rock' favourites Iron Maiden and Uriah Heap to (fairly) new artists Slipknot and Rammstein, 2013 has something for everybody* willing to rock out with their hair (and, in the majority of cases, beards) down.

Download 2013 - Live Review

What's unique about Download Festival is that it's all about the music. Sure, there are zip lines spanning the diameter of the arena and late night beach parties but, as Black Stone Cherry are proud to point out, festival promoter Andy Copping and festival director John Probyn listen to the passionate music fans! Throughout the year the rock and metal community voice their strong and often aggressive opinions on the Download Festival forums, suggesting and, in some cases, ordering Andy Copping who to book for the next approaching festival. This has created an intimate relationship between the organiser and the ticket buyer, resulting in a line-up revolving around the fans who, in turn, all share the same appreciation and respect for the artists on stage, as well as for one another.

Despite the aggressive lyrical content and the circular vortex of people smashing into one another (often referred to as 'moshing') everybody shares a mutual respect for one another's music tastes, as they combat the commercial, pop chart genres resulting in a friendly, non-threatening atmosphere which contrasts the aggressive music style.
