Scarlett Johansson Dreamworks

Dreamworks executives will be high-fiving for the rest of the week after landing Scarlett Johansson for their forthcoming anime adaptation Ghost in the Shell. It was a huge year for Johansson with Lucy and Captain America: The Winter Soldier doing massive business and she's about to star in Age of Ultron and Civil War.

However, perhaps her most interesting project to date is Ghost - based on the Japanese anime created by Masamune Shirow and serialized in 1989. It tells the story of Motoko Kusanagi, a member of the covert counter cyber-terrorist organisation which specializes in fighting technological crime in the 21st century in Japan. It's basically awesome. The series was previously adapted into a movie in 1995, which spawned a sequel in 2004.

What Is It About Animated Sequels?

Gerard Butler Disney Pixar Dreamworks Toy Story Shrek The Incredibles Finding Nemo

In a Hollywood atmosphere that currently seems obsessed with stretching even the most moderate of box-office successes into a full blown franchise, sequels and prequels are a ubiquitous presence in cinema multiplexes. But in the world of animated cinema, where the construction of a film requires infinitely more hard work and dedication than a live action picture, sequels tend to emerge that better the original- a much rarer occurrence amongst many Hollywood pictures.

How To Train Your Dragon 2Gerard Butler stars in How To Train Your Dragon 2 which has won copious plaudits.

That’s not to say there aren’t a few howlers either, animated studios such as Pixar and Disney are just as susceptible as the rest of the film world in dispensing some truly woeful and misguided follow ups. The likes of Cars 2 and Rio 2 left no-one with the life affirming sense of warmth that truly brilliant animated films of this type should provide. As is universally recognised, a mark of greatness from an animated film is its ability to simultaneously appeal to children and the adults who accompany them to the big screen. The likes of Shrek 1 & 2 and the Toy Story trilogy are prime examples of catering for both age groups through crafty pop culture references and subtle entendre.

Katzenberg added: "We want to let Brian do what Brian's been doing. We also have talked about what we think are going to be some additional great collaborations with Brian on YouTube and ways in which the DreamWorks brand can serve as a valuable, defining brand for him."

With 57,000 YouTube channels and 14.4 million subscribers, AwesomenessTV’s 1 million videos on the network have been seen 809 million times. It has programs like IMO (In My Opinion), a teen girl talk show, as well as comedies, dramas, music, and stand-alone videos like ‘How to Be the Perfect Babysitter.’ Rachel Egan, a spokeswoman for ad-buying network TubeMogul, said the purchase "seems like a broad recognition by DreamWorks that their younger audience — like the rest of us — are increasingly streaming content online, on mobile devices and in social media."
