Dreamworks Animation chief Jeffrey Katzenberg said Wednesday that new advances in computer technology will vastly speed up the intricate and tedious process of animation, making it possible for "our artists to see their work in real time." Appearing at a convention of The National Association of Theater Owners (NATO) in Las Vegas, Katzenberg said that the process, called "scalable multicore processing," will "fundamentally change the quality of what we do. ... The artist will see their work as they're creating it. ... I cannot tell you how transformative that will be in our storytelling." Katzenberg urged the theater owners to become more innovative as well. "Bring together seeing a movie and getting a meal," Katzenberg said. "I think it's the next blockbuster."
