How To Be Single Review

Very Good

There isn't much originality in this rude female-led comedy, but its observations on single life are a nicely updated twist on the Sex and the City formula. The film is also often very funny, keeping the energy levels high while refusing to go down the usual narrative route in each of the loosely intertwined plot-strands.

It's set in New York, of course, where Alice (Dakota Johnson) is newly single and starting a new job. Her colleague Robin (Rebel Wilson) takes her under her wing, teaching her how to be single in the big city. Alice's sister Meg (Leslie Mann) is a maternity doctor who's suddenly feeling the need to have a child of her own. Then just as she becomes pregnant using a sperm bank, she meets the outrageously charming Ken (Jake Lacy), who she thinks might be too young for her. Meanwhile, Alice's neighbour Lucy (Alison Brie) is flirting with the womanising local barman Tom (Anders Holm) as she looks for her perfect man.

Yes, this is another movie in which women define themselves by their aching need for a man. This kind of undermines the "you have to be happy on your own" message, although at least the three main romantic-comedy plots don't fit into the usual cliched structure. The film is packed with frank, girly conversations, exploring how it feels to be single in a society in which coupling up is seen as the ultimate goal. So while commenting on every possible aspect of sex and relationships, the script also tries to say that it's perfectly fine to remain happily unattached. Thankfully, the cast is grounded enough to balance the comedy and romance in realistic situations. Johnson, Brie and Mann all deliver funny, revealing performances as smart women who make silly decisions. Wilson, by contrast, is mere comic relief in the same role she always plays.

The Super Bowl XLIX was all anyone could talk about over the weekend - and it wasn't just about the epic win of the New England Patriots over the Seattle Seahawks. As per usual, this year provided some pretty hilarious highlights, most notably from 'The Tonight Show''s Jimmy Fallon.

Steven Spielberg and Drew Barrymore

When director Steven Spielberg cast a 7 year old Drew Barrymore in E.T., she wasn't just any aspiring child actress, she was his goddaughter. Once Drew hit her rebellious teen phase she gave her famous godfather plenty of reasons to be worried, Spielberg wasn’t particularly pleased when the then 19 year old posed for Playboy magazine. To show his objection he allegedly sent her the gift of a blanket with a note reading ‘‘cover up’’, also enclosed were Drew’s Playboy pics which had been digitally altered so she now appeared fully clothed.

Second Baby Announcement From Drew Barrymore Follows A Weekend Of Intense "Baby Bump Watch"

Drew Barrymore

This year seems to have been all about celebrity babies and pregnancies and while Drew Barrymore might be a bit late to the party, here she is with some exciting news of her own. According to US Weekly, the actress’ reps have confirmed that Ms Barrymore does in fact, have a bun in the oven, and the early reports of an emerging bump isn’t simply due to natural weight gain. Well, that depends on how you define natural weight gain, anyway.

Over the weekend, the actress appeared to be concealing an already growing baby bump.

The little stranger (want to see how many baby euphemisms can be squeezed into one article?) will be the second one for the 38-year-old actress and her husband Will Kopelman. Their first daughter, Olive is just 13 months old. Even before the official confirmation of the news from Barrymore’s camp, the rumors had started swirling, after the actress/producer made an appearance LACMA Art+Film Gala honoring Martin Scorcese and David Hockney on Saturday, Nov. 2. She wore a long, loose-fitting dress, which seemed like the classic mother-to-be choice for an actress.

Drew Barrymore's Santa Barbara Estate On The Market For $7.5 Million

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore is putting her fancy Santa Barbara-county estate house up for sale – and it’s going to cost you a pretty penny if you want to get a hold of it. According to E! News, the actress – who is also owner of Flower Beauty and Barrymore Wines – is putting up the mansion for a whopping $7.5 million.

Barrymore famously married Will Kopelman there and E! Online reckon that property is definitely one for lovers whether be young and old, thanks to an apparently inviting design and walking pathway that trails through the lush grounds, gorgeous gardens and expansive lawns. They should take up cricket. Here’s some more bragging rights: the home also includes a separate guest apartment in ADDITION to its six bedrooms and eight baths, the whole thing spread out over an impressive 6,000 square feet.

Barrymore is set to star alongside goofy comedy clown Adam Sandler in the film Blended. The film centres on a couple whose disastrous blind date finds them at a family resort with their children from previous marriages. Sounds like an utter hoot to us. Dancing Star Melissa Gilbert Ties The Knot With Actor Timothy Bushfield

Melissa Gilbert Drew Barrymore Hilary Duff

There was dancing and there were stars – of the literal kind – as former Dancing with the Stars contestant Melissa Gilbert got hitched to Thirtysomething actor Timothy Bushfield on Wednesday, April 24. The couple opted for an intimate ceremony. The pair tied the knot "in a private ceremony at San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara on April 24," Gilbert's rep confirms to People Magazine.

Gilbert (48) is probably best known for her role on “Little House On The Prairie”. Her beau has some impressive TV credentials as well, having appeared on Blue Bloods, Law & Order and The West Wing. Gilbert and 55-year-old Bushfield broke the news of their engagement back in December and, after just six months, the pair have opted to tied the knot. Both have been married twice before, but they say third time’s the charm, right? Gilbert is also a mother of two, while Bushfield has three children from previous marriages.

Gilbert opted out of the traditional white gown and instead went for a red number with a classic cut – a perfect complement to the warm spring night of the wedding. This isn’t the first high profile event, held at Ysidro Ranch. Over the years, the luxury hotel has played host to a number of celebs, from Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman, who had their rehearsal dinner there, to Hillary Duff, who chose the place for her wedding night.

Drew Barrymore's Goatee Moment Really Isn't All That Unusual

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore revealed that she grew a goatee during her pregnancy.

The actress gave birth to her baby girl Olive last year and has been opening up about the experience of pregnancy and motherhood. Her recent comments about balancing motherhood with a career, but this time the actress talked about a topic that’s probably more unifying for mothers-to-be: the hormone spikes. The odd bouts of facial hair and red spots might not sound like the most appealing thing ever, but they are perfectly normal, as hormones go rampant during pregnancy. And anyway, the fuzz usually goes away after just a couple of weeks. But kudos to Barrymore for being this open about the issues she went through.

The 38-year-old reveals to In Touch magazine, "I got a wonderful little goatee, and it was red! I also got hyperpigmentation on my cheeks." Unlike some of her fellow actresses, Barrymore hasn’t instantly gotten back into superhuman shape either. "I'd rather kill myself than get into a bikini right now!...I take care of myself, but I'm never going to be the person who talks about diet and exercise. I would fail that conversation!"

"Women Can't Have It All," Says Drew Barrymore. Or Can They?

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore, the woman who has been balancing an acting career and a public persona with her personal life ever since early childhood, is probably the last person you’d expect to recite the “women can’t have it all” mantra. And yet, that’s exactly what she did, while talking about juggling her new responsibilities as a mother on a panel for Lucky.

“It sucks when you’ve worked really hard for certain things and you have to give them up because you know that you’re going to miss out on your child’s upbringing, or you realize that your relationship has suffered,” Barrymore said, via Us Magazine.

That’s fair enough, but then the actress went on to make some broader statements: “I was raised in that generation of women can have it all, and I don’t think you can. I think some things fall off the table. The good news is, what does stay on the table becomes much more in focus and much more important.”

Drew Barrymore's Happy Home Life With Husband And Baby Is A "Miracle"

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore's love life hasn't exactly been lightness and joy. Before her current husband and father of her child, Will Kopelman, she had already wed twice, with the happen marriages lasting no longer than a year each (one lasted only two months).

However, since she began dating art consultant and the son of the former Chanel CEO, Will Kopelman in 2011 and their wedding in June this year, her life has turned around. She spoke to People about how wonderful her life is now and about being a new mother.

"I couldn't eat or sleep for two weeks, I was just so nervous!" She said, about the aftermath of the birth of her daughter, Olive Barrymore Kopelman. "You have the highest highs and yet you're facing the biggest fear of, 'How do I keep someone alive?' " Adding, "I really wanted a wonderful traditional home for my kids. Will comes from a strong family, he provides a strong family ... It just makes me so emotional because it's like a miracle."

Olive’s A Cover Star! Drew Barrymore And Daughter Grace Cover Of People Magazine

Drew Barrymore

Drew Barrymore’s new baby daughter Olive is only a few weeks old but she’s already a cover star. The ET actress and her new born baby are the stars of the latest issue of People magazine, in which Drew talks about the joys of motherhood and becoming a parent, with her partner, art consultant Will Kopelman.

“I couldn’t eat or sleep for two weeks, I was just so nervous,” she told the magazine and added “I really wanted a wonderful traditional home for my kid," she says. "Will comes from a strong family, he provides a strong family ... It just makes me so emotional because it's like a miracle.” Barrymore is clearly very much in love (as you would hope!) with Kopelman, whom she married in the summer but she explains the love that she has for Olive has given her a whole new take on the notion of love: “You have the highest highs and yet you're facing the biggest fear of, 'How do I keep someone alive?'” and explains that nobody can really prepare you for the extra responsibility of motherhood.

Olive’s a lucky baby having such a talented mother, too; apparently one of Drew and Will’s favorite ways to get little Olive to smile is to sing ‘Good Morning’ from Singin’ In The Rain. “It's like the biggest crush I've ever had in my life!” gushes Drew. We look forward to seeing more snaps of Olive as she grows up!

Beverly Hills' Flop: Eddie Murphy Is Forbes' Most Overpaid Actor

Eddie Murphy Drew Barrymore

Forbes’ rich lists are always a joy to behold each year, aren't they?. Oh, how we rejoice, with ne’er a hint of jealousy, to learn of the many millions of dollars that our favorite (or not, as the case may be) stars have earned in the previous 12 months. OK, let’s be honest. Those lists make us mere mortals sick with envy, right? As the global recession firms up its grip on our dwindling cash reserves, it sickens us to learn of the amount of money these celebrities earn. And what’s worse is the way that they are celebrated for it, with no question of what the hell one person could possibly need all that money for (yes, Oprah Winfrey, we ARE looking at you).

How refreshing then, that Forbes should also point out that many of these celebs are barely worth the money we’re paying them. Bad news for Eddie Murphy, then, who’s been named as the top of their list of over-paid actors. This isn’t just based on opinion of course – though frankly, even it were, you’d probably find Murphy up the top of the list; after all, he’s hardly made any movies worth watching since Dreamgirls and that was six years ago. Forbes look at how much an actor is paid and then compare that to how much money their movies bring in. And Eddie’s currently scoring a rather paltry $2.30. Not exactly a great return, there.

That said, he’s still doing a lot better than Drew Barrymore did last year, whose movies earned just 40 cents for every dollar she was paid. Now, we don’t need to sit through an economics lesson to know that those numbers just don’t add up. Lucky for Drew, she’s out of the top ten this year.

Olive: Drew Barrymore’s New Baby Name Revealed

Drew Barrymore Cameron Diaz Reese Witherspoon Jimmy Fallon

Drew Barrymore welcomed her first child, and has named her new baby daughter Olive, reports US Weekly.

"We are proud to announce the birth of our daughter, Olive Barrymore Kopelman, born September 26th, healthy, happy and welcomed by the whole family," the couple says in a statement. "Thank you for respecting our privacy during this most special time in our lives." Barrymore married art consultant Will Kopelman back in June in a Jewish ceremony at their estate in Montecito, southern California. They began dating back in 2010. Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Jim Toth and Jimmy Fallon were among those who attended the ceremony. "Everyone knows the baby's coming, so there wasn't much talk about it," a source revealed about Drew Barrymore’s wedding. "Will said something like, 'I'm excited to marry you. I'm excited to meet the newest member of our family.” It seems as though babies were always on the cards for the couple: "They have been trying to get pregnant," one source shared. "That's why they got engaged . . . They are very happy! She's ready to settle down and be a mom."

Barrymore has come a long way since her cinematic bow in the sci-fi family epic E.T. She has now played myriad roles in films like The Wedding Singer, Scream and Charlie’s Angels, as well as performing voice-acting roles in Family Guy and The Simpsons. And she can now add the role of proud mum to her impressive discography. Kopelman is the son of former Chanel executive Arie Kopelman.

Big Miracle Review

Very Good
A grounding in the real-life story makes this film much less sentimental than it looks. Strong characters, some surprisingly dark touches and a genuinely thrilling series of events helps to engage us right to the end.

In 1988 Barrow, at the top of Alaska, aspiring reporter Adam (Krasinski) stumbles across three whales trapped beneath the icecap. Unable to reach the open sea, there's just a tiny hole in the ice that lets them breathe. Adam's report goes viral, grabbing the attention of America's press as well as his Greenpeace-activist ex Rachel (Barrymore). And the rescue effort will require an L.A. journalist (Bell), military pilot (Mulroney), Inuit boy (Sweeney), whale expert (Nelson), oil baron (Danson), White House rep (Shaw), two chuckleheads from Minnesota (LeGros and Riggle) and the Russian Navy.

News reporter Adam Carlson is based in a remote part of Alaska, in a town called Point Barrow. As a consequence, there usually is little to talk about in the way of local news. After one news report, which saw him explaining how food can take up to four plane journeys to arrive in town, his boss rings to comment about how 'thin' his stories are. That is, until Adam sees something extraordinary out to sea. It transpires that there are three California gray whales stuck under the ice near Point Barrow. Adam captures the incident on his camera and rings his boss to tell him of his findings.

Adam's report on the whales makes it onto the news, where he tells stunned viewers that the ice the whales are trapped under extends five miles to the ocean. No one is more stunned than Rachel Kramer, a Greenpeace activist and Adam's ex-girlfriend. She rings him up to announce that she will help him rescue the whales. Soon enough, Adam not only has the support of his ex but of the entire town as well, all doing what they can to make a path to the ocean through the ice. Adam and Rachel soon find themselves united under a common goal and they slowly start to fall back in love again.

Grey Gardens (2009) Review

Extraordinary
Most serious film fans know the story of Grey Gardens: how documentarians Albert and David Maysles were investigating the life of Jackie Kennedy Onassis's sister Lee Radziwill for a film and stumbled upon the unforgettable duo of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter Little Eddie; how it took a year of "convincing" before the women would allow them to film in their manor; how the resulting motion picture turned the plight of these discarded society matrons into the stuff of living legend; and how since the movie's success, the Beales' story has been adapted into books, a Broadway musical, and a stage play. Now HBO puts its spin on the material, bringing Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore to the small screen for the TV version of this intriguing tale -- and it's also amazing, just like the subjects.

When they are approached by the Maysles (Arye Gross, Justin Louis) about making a movie of their life, Big Edith Beale (Lange) and her daughter Little Edie (Barrymore) are a tad suspicious. After all, they have let few people in their decaying Hamptons home, and the last time anyone showed up, it was the county health inspector threatening to condemn the mansion. Intrigued by the idea of being in a movie however, the duo agree, and soon we are whisked back to the days when Big Edith suffered through her straight-laced husband Phelan (Ken Howard) as Little Edie wooed Truman Cabinet member Julius Krug (Daniel Baldwin). As she ages, the sullen matriarch wants more freedom. Instead, she becomes a virtual recluse in her home, calling on her jet-setting offspring to come home and care for her. Thanks to relative Jackie Onassis (Jeanne Tripplehorn), they have enough money to live on. But their life is still one of misguided dreams and internalized strife.

Skipped Parts Review

Bad
I have been searching for a delicate way to put this, but nothing has come to mind, so here goes: This movie is seriously screwed up.

Skipped Parts, based on a purportedly much-loved book that I've never heard of, tells the unlikely story of a 15-year-old boy (Bug Hall) in the early 1960s, whose trashy mother (Jennifer Jason Leigh, a fright in platinum blonde) encourages him to do whatever he wants. Namely, that involves experimenting with sex, and our buddy Bug does so, frequently, with the local cheerleader (Mischa Barton, the scariest looking young actress in film today, next to Gaby Hoffman). Meanwhile, mom sluts it up with a friendly Indian while the prepubescent teen becomes pregnant during all this boning.

Donnie Darko Review

Very Good
Donnie Darko is a writer-director's debut that takes on schizophrenia, time travel, teenage angst, dysfunctional suburban family life, societal farce, and hallucinations of an evil bunny in a gorgeously filmed two-hour package deserves serious props. But Richard Kelly's fascinating film is seriously flawed in that it never brings all these disparate elements together in the end. Not to mention that it bears the worst title of the year.

Set in 1988, Donnie Darko is a John Hughes teen movie tinged with David Lynch-ian gloom and perversity. It begins innocently enough around the Darko's dining room table, where we find out the older sister (Maggie Gyllenhaal) is rebelliously voting for Dukakis and Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal, Bubble Boy) is off his meds. From here, the film churns forward at a hypnotic pace, revealing facts about its disturbed but endearing title character.

Terrible

If I see one more high school movie that uses a Literature class Shakespearelesson as a metaphor for raging hormones and whatever else the screenwriteris trying to put across, I swear I'm going to throttle someone.

But such ridiculously hackneyed plot devices are the leastof the problem with "Never Been Kissed," the most agonizing flickever made by Drew Barrymore, an endearing actress with regrettably badtaste in scripts.
